Ireland AZ over 60s only.

It’s being reported that Ireland is going to give AZ to over 60s only. Expected announcement at 7.30pm this evening.

200K have already been vaccinated with it and while it was paused, it then resumed although they knew there were issues surrounding it when it was resumed.

I’m pleased they are being responsible but a bit late for the 200K already injected...,!

They said people walked out without it citing they preferred to wait for a different vaccine.

What a disgraceful waste of an appointments when other far more sensible people would have been delighted to take the vaccine there and then.

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2021 19:12

@anyoldtime

Does the delay not concern you?

No.
Another couple of months won’t make much difference.

Why not? What happens to people who get Covid in that time that otherwise could have been vaccinated?
pinkearedcow · 12/04/2021 19:21

What does this mean? A bit late for what? Millions and millions and millions of us here in the UK have had AZ and we are hardly keeling over in our hundreds. I am glad someone has reported this thread, hopefully it will vanish soon. So sick of the AZ scaremongering, it is so fucking irresponsible.

BrilloSolar · 12/04/2021 19:22

@kissmelittleass I actually think there's more chance of them getting people vaccinated than there is of anyone organising a piss up in a brewery. I really want to go to the pub!!!

@anyoldtime It may not concern you for it to be delayed by a few months, but it hugely impacts a hell of a lot people and businesses. Another couple of months of no income and mental health hell is a very very big deal to me.

anyoldtime · 12/04/2021 19:22

I feel reassured they ie the Irish Gov have weighed up the odds and concluded it is safer to accept the delay than continue using AZ for under 60s. I just wish they hadn’t taken so long to make the decision. They should have followed other countries earlier.

Today for the first time since 31st Dec 2020 we are allowed travel more than 5KM from our homes. We can now go 20KM and we are delighted Smile
A few months of this and we won’t notice the longer wait.

Ah thanks for clarifying anyoldtime! My fault for misreading it. It did confuse me Wink

I bet.

Well we’ll take your extra doses back op.

I actually laughed at that. Is this real? Safer to accept the delay?

Mumsnet are you going to let comments like that about the safety of the vaccine stand?

God I never thought I'd be glad of the UK government and Boris but for once I am!

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2021 19:28

Strawberry it is mind boggling I agree.

anyoldtime · 12/04/2021 19:29

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind

You might not agree but the Gov made their decision based on their advisor’s information who
presumably have quite a lot of information in their hands.

OP posts:
trashcansinatra · 12/04/2021 19:30

There is a really good article somewhere (might be private eye) that explains why there is different advice.

It's all to do with whether you care more about stopping people dying from Covid (which the UK is prioritising) or preventing side effects from the vaccine (which the EU care more about.)

The (tiny) potential clot risk is that same whatever age you are; as you get younger, the risk of dying from COVID declines, which is why there is an age cut off and why it's different in different places.

pinkearedcow · 12/04/2021 19:30

@StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind I do think there is a concerted effort by some on MN to spread fear about the AZ vaccine. I bet the usual suspects will turn up to this thread soon as well.

IcedPurple · 12/04/2021 19:31

Another couple of months won’t make much difference.

Ireland has been in perhaps the longest lockdown in Europe, but a 'few more months won't make much difference'?

I'd say it would make a massive difference to the thousands of businesses who may not survive this.

anyoldtime · 12/04/2021 19:32

I'd say it would make a massive difference to the thousands of businesses who may not survive this.

I’m fairly sure the Gov will have weighed this up.

Do you always have such blind trust in your government?

And it's really good that you're 'delighted' that they're 'allowing' you to travel more than 5km from your homes. If you're all good boys and girls maybe they'll allow you to have a socially distanced lemonade outdoors round about next February.

Dunnesstores · 12/04/2021 19:35

I'm Irish, I've had my first AZ dose and I don't feel one bit relieved by this news.
We've been patient with the slow supplies and extended lock down and now a proven safe vaccine is been taken off the cards for the majority of the population and those of us under 60 who received one dose are in limbo.

paralysedbyinertia · 12/04/2021 19:41

I guess Ireland had better hope that it doesn't get a third wave, then. It's a pretty massive gamble to take, but I hope it works out for them.

It has to be said that the Irish vaccine rollout has been shambolic, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2021 19:42

Op what is the situation there?

Is everything still closed and schools too?

Tealightsandd · 12/04/2021 19:43

There's a much higher risk of developing serious clotting issues from actual covid than the extremely rare vaccine side effect.

I don't think the thread needs deleting? It's so far out ridiculous to claim months more delay (with all the extra deaths, long covid cases, and effect on struggling businesses that entails) is preferable to taking an approved as safe vaccine. I think most adults with a modicum of sense will realise that?

Every single medical drug that exists has extremely rare side effects.

TheKeatingFive · 12/04/2021 19:45

Speaking as an Irish person it is fucking ridiculous.

But our government seem determined to cock this up, on every level, at every given opportunity.

We will now have an over supply of AZ and no one to give it to. Absolute incompetence.

paralysedbyinertia · 12/04/2021 19:45

Maybe the plan is to keep everyone in lockdown for a couple of months longer while they source the alternative vaccines. Seems quite a disproportionate measure to me, given the impact of lockdown and the very low risk associated with the vaccine, but if the Irish people are happy to stay in lockdown for as long as it takes, I guess that's fair enough.

I hope that any unused AZ vaccines can be diverted to countries that will use them, though. It would be a crying shame to let effective vaccines go to waste when people are still dying in their thousands and suffering the effects of long covid etc. Hopefully, the Irish government has a plan for this.

TheKeatingFive · 12/04/2021 19:46

Is everything still closed and schools too?

Schools fully open as of today.

Not much else. We’re finally being released from our 5k house arrest Hmm

Having said that, absolutely no one is obeying guidelines on the ground.

TheLongRider · 12/04/2021 19:48

Schools are completely back from today.

IcedPurple · 12/04/2021 19:49

Maybe the plan is to keep everyone in lockdown for a couple of months longer while they source the alternative vaccines.

What if the 'alternative vaccines' also turn out to have some rare side effect? Lock down again until whenever? Ireland has been under Level 5 lockdown since the start of the year, with no end in sight.

if the Irish people are happy to stay in lockdown for as long as it takes, I guess that's fair enough.

They may not be so happy when the bill comes due.

TheKeatingFive · 12/04/2021 19:51

The country is being effectively ruled by the medical establishment. The government is out sourcing all major decisions to them.

They seem to want to keep the country in lockdown for the foreseeable. Without noticing what’s actually going on in the streets.

Why the retail/hospitality sector isn’t rebelling I don’t know. Though give it a few weeks.
