It’s being reported that Ireland is going to give AZ to over 60s only. Expected announcement at 7.30pm this evening.

200K have already been vaccinated with it and while it was paused, it then resumed although they knew there were issues surrounding it when it was resumed.

I’m pleased they are being responsible but a bit late for the 200K already injected...,!

Just been announced that we are receiving an additional 545k doses from Pfizer during Q2. We'll be fine.

TheKeatingFive · 14/04/2021 14:20

We’re still facing a significant shortfall due to J&J uncertainty.

IrishMamaMia · 14/04/2021 14:21

That's great news @Cherrycee
Let's hope they can get them in arms asap.

TheKeatingFive · 14/04/2021 14:40

Sorry, I should acknowledge that the Pfizer news is positive. As is the fact that they’re considering lengthening their time between doses to give more people protection in the short term.

Wakeupin2022 · 14/04/2021 14:49

TheKeating I very much doubt some will agree with spacing out Pfizer! It was the UK that did that 1st & we are the odd ones out and our experts are shit - well that's the gist you get from many on here Hmm

Sakura7 · 14/04/2021 14:50

@TheKeatingFive

The FDA briefing yesterday made it clear that the pause would only be for a few days while they updated clinical guidelines, provided information on treatments, etc. Once that's lifted, J&J will presumably proceed as planned. The bulk of it wasn't coming until the end of Q2 anyway.

Even if J&J was to be suspended (which is unlikely), we're only down 100k doses in Q2 thanks to the extra Pfizer. 3.8m v 3.9m, with further supplies coming in July.

The Pfizer update is brilliant news, there's no need to spin it as a negative.

TheKeatingFive · 14/04/2021 14:52

Time will tell. Let’s talk again end of June and see if that target’s been met.

Oh absolutely. Meanwhile one country is coming out of lock down and the other ... isn’t.

Wakeupin2022 · 14/04/2021 14:53

J&J surely will go the same way as AZ?

It can't be used because it has the same issues (which are miniscule).

But you can't say one of them is shite and the other is OK.

Sakura7 · 14/04/2021 15:06

I reckon the absolute furthest we'd space out Pfizer is 6 weeks, and there's evidence to support that being a reasonable limit.

Cherrycee · 14/04/2021 15:16

But you can't say one of them is shite and the other is OK.

Is anyone saying that either are shite? The Irish authorities didn't, quite the opposite in fact.

The J&J instances are much more rare, at 0.8 per million.

AstraZeneca is 4 to 10 per million.

There is a difference, but it's early days and very small numbers.

Ultimately it depends where you draw the threshold, and whether you have other vaccines to use.

By the time we get significant stock of J&J in June, we may have far more information about the risk factors, which would allow us to restrict it for more specific cohorts than 'all under 60s'. We may well be able to do the same for AstraZeneca in time.

Kathy2020 · 14/04/2021 16:08

“People aged over 80 receiving a single dose of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca COVID vaccine show equivalent antibody responses five weeks post vaccination. However, stronger cellular (T cell) responses were seen in people who had received the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine”
-quote from coronavirus good news Twitter account
Apologies no idea how to post link

Kathy2020 · 14/04/2021 16:11

In hindsight we probably would have been better off using AZ in our elderly and continue to use the rna vaccines as we were before on the fhcw
Ireland now looking into extending 2nd doses for Pfizer’s

@TheKeatingFive what is with your obsession with the Irish vaccine rollout / Ireland and criticising it?
Wildswim · 15/04/2021 17:54

I imagine TheKeatingFive is frustrated at being subjected to one off the world's longest and harshest lockdowns with no end in sight?

Even NI with the most cautious leadership ever has finally announced dates for everything opening up. And 40 year olds have been getting the vaccine for a week now.

TheVeryThing · 15/04/2021 18:32

So bloody sick of UK-based mumsnetters being amazed at how slow our vaccine delivery is by comparison.
Honestly, when will people realise that the reason we are behind the UK in terms of unlocking is that we haven't had the same supply of vaccine? As much as I love to criticise the irish government that lack of supply is not their fault.
As far as I'm aware, 95% of vaccine doses are administered within 7 days of arriving in the country, that doesn't scream 'shambolic' to me!
Absolutely no point in unlocking everything too soon and having another wave like we had in January.
We are currently doing better than most of Europe in terms of case numbers and death rates and vaccine supply will increase dramatically in the next couple of months.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 15/04/2021 18:50

@Wildswim no end in sight? Maybe she/you should read the news in Ireland then to get information readily available on next steps?
