Ireland AZ over 60s only.

It’s being reported that Ireland is going to give AZ to over 60s only. Expected announcement at 7.30pm this evening.

200K have already been vaccinated with it and while it was paused, it then resumed although they knew there were issues surrounding it when it was resumed.

I’m pleased they are being responsible but a bit late for the 200K already injected...,!

@TheKeatingFive

How is it any different to the U.K. stay at home guidance?

Well I don’t think they had police empowered to fine people if they went 6k from their home on a walk.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

You're not wrong.
TheKeatingFive · 13/04/2021 13:58

Yes you could be fined for being outside your 5k in Ireland.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 13/04/2021 13:59

@Wildswim where in Ireland are you located? I’ve been stopped only about 4 times by the guards since December. In that time I’ve travelled to Wicklow to bring my gran groceries, to the city centre to the doctors several times, to my sisters in Kildare twice when she moved house to help her move , to the vets 25 mins drive away and to the shops twice a week every week which are 30 mins away as I live rurally.

When I did get stopped the guards were perfectly nice when I gave my reason and told me to take care of myself.

And the U.K. police weren’t reported in the media as harassing women sitting on a park bench for being away from their homes?

I have siblings who live in Dublin. Both are stopped regularly, e.g. when driving to and from work. Especially the one north of the city.

That was appalling, but the police were clearly in the wrong there according to the law.

Two women have described how they were surrounded by police, read their rights and fined £200 each after driving five miles to take a walk.

This was a one-off incident which hit the news and appalled eveyone. The police later rescinded the fines and apologised.

But in Ireland it would have been within the law.

Sakura7 · 13/04/2021 14:09

@ForeverAintEnough12

Agreed. I've only encountered a checkpoint once in the last three months, and I'm in a fairly densely populated area near a major motorway.

There's no need for anyone to feel sorry for us, we're on our way out of this. UK has done well in recent months but that wasn't always the case. It's shit for every country.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 13/04/2021 14:13

@Sakura7 agreed. I am happy with how we are doing. The vaccinations has been bad so far but the expected supply should ramp it back up. Obviously we are all completely fed up of lockdown at this stage but cases are low, hospitalisation low, vaccine rates increasing and our death rate has been a lot lower than other countries. I don’t think scaremongering tales of ‘heavy policing’ in Ireland from people that don’t even live here are too useful.

Most people I know have been asking where all the checkpoint have disappeared to since Christmas!

anyoldtime · 13/04/2021 14:17

Wildswim
I don’t understand the purpose of your posts. Lockdown is worse in Ireland. Ok.

www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/government-fears-restrictions-on-astrazeneca-could-slow-vaccine-rollout-1109765.html

In proportion to other countries Ireland deaths fairly low.
Also its not that big a population and country.
Its shame they dident do joint purchasing with uk as we share a land border.
If we had any spares it only be az as that's all uk manufacturers until norovax online however they haven't signed contract with EU yet.
The Russian and Chinese vaccines similar type vaccine to az so maybe similar issues and less efficiency.

IrishMamaMia · 13/04/2021 15:11

If the majority of Irish people are happy with the current situation and their restrictions, I guess there's not much more to be said then. Equally I am happy that we in the UK have stuck with our roll out for the most part and it seems to be working at the moment. Will be interesting to see how this evolves for both countries and our shared border.

Cailleach1 · 13/04/2021 15:27

Well, talk of an ass and he's sure to pass!

US pharmaceuticals group Johnson & Johnson is halting the roll-out of its Leiden-developed vaccine to Europe because of possible thrombosis-related side effects.

TheKeatingFive · 13/04/2021 15:28

Colour me surprised

OuiOuiKitty · 13/04/2021 15:34

There's been no 5k radius limit in UK. The Irish hold the dubious record of longest and harshest lockdown in Europe and they held that long before today.

And the UK has a death rate twice as high as Ireland. Apples and oranges really isn't it.

Rukaya · 13/04/2021 15:37

From my relatives in ROI I know it's been very different to the UK experience. A much heavier police presence in Ireland

And half the death rate. Which would you prefer?

Cailleach1 · 13/04/2021 15:38

So, that is Johnson & Johnson themselves suspending the European rollout of their vaccine; pending the results of investigations in the US. Not European countries, or the EMA, taking that decision.

Abraxan · 13/04/2021 15:41

@anyoldtime

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall Actually a four day headache is a symptom which I had along with three other symptoms which my GP thought serious enough to send me to hospital for further investigations. You should really do some actual research rather than rely on digging through my posts though :).
And were you symptoms linked to blood clots, potentially caused by the AZ vaccine?

I was rushed to hospital and scanned, along with other tests, for dangerous blood clots and a very real risk of heart attack and/or stroke. It was covid which was causing this and why I was admitted into hospital, and still having issues 6 months on, including long term medication. Granted it wasn't the rare clot version they were concerned about, just your average, also potentially fatal, blood clots.

anyoldtime · 13/04/2021 15:59

This pretty much sums it up.

Granted it wasn't the rare clot version they were concerned about, just your average, also potentially fatal, blood clots.

Sure tell J&J they can stop their investigations too then.

OP posts:
Abraxan · 13/04/2021 16:03

I'm not saying there isn't a link. At present they aren't sure. But the fact remains that at present it is still very rare.

Whereas a risk of blood clots with covid itself, albeit not the variety potentially seen with the vaccine, is less rare and a more common complication. These forms of blood clots can also be fatal.

I have had my first vaccine and was happy to have either. I would not have refused AZ personally. I didn't want to risk catching covid again, not sure if my body could cope with it again right now tbh.

Puppalicious · 13/04/2021 16:08

There seems to be a large cohort in Ireland who seem to be happy with lockdown for ever. Probably those WFH, saving lots of time and money and past their socialising years anyway.

anyoldtime · 13/04/2021 16:12

But the fact remains that at present it is still very rare

You should share your research and findings with Governments worldwide and J&J. You’d save them billions.

Rukaya · 13/04/2021 16:16

I don't know whether its hilarious or depressing to see people on here pontificating on what vaccine causes what problem or not, and what the entire world should be doing....the sheer arrogance to think that your uninformed, uneducated little opinion has any merit of any kind, to imagine you are in any way qualified to even form one!?

Beggars belief really. You haven't seen the data or know any of the facts, but hey you read a newspaper article so you think you can expound at length about how the experts are wrong....I mean the confidence would be admirable in some settings but really it's just embarrassing to witness.

Abraxan · 13/04/2021 16:23

@anyoldtime

But the percentage of people getting these clots IS very low. Based in the numbers we've been told in the media anyway.

Just like the chance of dying from covid for younger people without health issues is pretty rare too.

Or do you have a source for higher figures?
