I just want my cut and colour.

Haven’t read article or heard from Aveda about this but gave highlights booked soon

RedGoldAndGreene · 10/04/2021 16:13

To everyone who is saying the OP has an 'extreme reaction' to just a hair cut, you really cant see the bigger picture here.

People understand that not all guidelines are logical but it is unreasonable to get angry about something that is a guideline rather than a law. Something that we've learned over the past year - they aren't written in conjunction with the experts eg policy on schools and they were devised with a male bias eg golf being allowed

Hairdressers/barbers are the best at judging which guidelines work best for their business. A barber cutting men's hair in 15 minutes will be very different to a hairdresser whose customers are elderly and want their hair set and coloured or a drop in blow dry bar. I suspect guidelines are more of interest to the insurers anyway so that they can come up with suitable terms and conditions.

If your regular salon stops hair colour (unlikely) go to another. If there's demand for a service and it is profitable, there will be an abundance of people providing it.

RedGoldAndGreene · 10/04/2021 16:15

I'm guessing that you will have been flamed for this but you may have worried someone unnecessarily with your title. There has been a lot of fear mongering this past year and while this isn't major, it could cause anxiety

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 10/04/2021 16:16

Highlights restrictions are not “fear mongering”

I don't know what is more ridiculous. The foot stomping over the not-banned highlights or the world war two finger waggers?

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 10/04/2021 16:31

@Wearywithteens

Is this for real? ‘Psychological abuse’ and ‘being shat on’ by the government... ? Because of some poorly written guidance about hairdressing that will be universally ignored? Good job you don’t live in China or North Korea where psychological abuse by the state is real.

Get. A. Fucking. Grip.

Messages like 'don't kill granny' aren't psychological abuse then @Wearywithteens?

Has anyone on this thread compared our government to China or North Korea? Must have missed that. Is that how low we should set the bar then, 'as long as it's not as bad as North Korea'?

It's dangerous to not scrutinise what they are currently doing, not to question the restrictions and guidance that are in place. And not just what they are doing with regards to the pandemic, police and crime bill ring any bells?

CoffeandPancakes · 10/04/2021 16:44

Hrtft but seriously, it's not about hair really. It's about the absolute contradiction and double standards that seem to be going in.

Our economy needs a jump start and there is no way of doing it without a degree of risk.

We can't keep doors locked indefinitely, but that doesn't mean I don't feel terrible for those who are still shielding or have lost a loved one. It's an absolute tragedy, but nobody is seriously saying that having their hair done is worth someone's life. Of course not, but it has to be about balance at this stage.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/04/2021 16:45

I've had a couple of last straw moments, can't even remember small ridiculous things they were about now . Its been a long , quite miserable year!

I'm sure you've had loads of grips handed to you, people saying think yourself lucky I've not left the house for a year and probably loads of references to ww2

Personally I find those people far more annoying than someone having a bit of a what the fucking hell moment these days

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/04/2021 16:45

it's all well and good saying 'dont't worry it's just guidance and everyone will ignore it' when there's plenty of examples of the police threatening people and on many occasions fining them for not following guidance.

SummerHouse · 10/04/2021 16:53

Hello. I am Summerhouse. It's been a year and two month since I last visited the hairdresser. My hair literally is the final straw. I look like Peter Stringfellow. I fantasize about haircuts.

Hopefully I will get to the hairdresser soon and if I do, I will have highlights as this is just guidance. However job, children and a shit tip of a house are my main barriers.

Agreed. I am shocked by the extreme positions taken on mums net and in real life during this pandemic. I always feel like all of life is always in the grey middle!

What, the ignorance of the science of VACCINES which appear to be doing a fucking fantastic job, reducing the number of deaths and hospitalisations massively? @Radio4Rocks

This pandemic has highlighted the polar opposite of personalities those that would sacrifice so much for others, and those who won't even “sacrifice” a professional hair colour.

You forgot to mention those people who "won't even sacrifice a professional hair colour" have already sacrificed an awful lot over the last 12 months but go on insinuating that they have sacrificed nothing if you think it makes a better story Hmm

RedGoldAndGreene · 10/04/2021 21:13

People aren't pure good/bad. You can be an NHS hero looking forward to your foreign holiday and mooching around Primark or a person who technically broke the rules by hugging a person suffering a bereavement.

Cases are low now and salons that I visited last year have been more vigilant about Covid safety than the local hospital.

tobee · 10/04/2021 21:34

Look my family and I (2 adult dc living at home) have shielded for cev Dh since first lockdown. It's been not much fun. But I'm not going to begrudge people wanting to get highlights or whatever.

The point is, I like living in a society where everyone is free to live their lives; want to get back to that as was pre pandemic.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/04/2021 22:23

It normally is the little things that finish people off.

In this case, guidence is unlikely to be followed as it's too much a core of businesses that have been unable to function pretty much since November for much of the country, plus 3 months earlier last year. But other bits of guidence have been taken seriously. How many threads rowing over what is local, sitting on benches, hugging loved ones, essential shopping, how far to exercise and how long... Police have had to issue appologies after mistaking law and guidence.

I'm a low maintainence person, but self care is important to some. On the morning of my dad's funeral, my mum was at the hairdressers ensuring that she looked her best, and giving herself the boost to get through a particularly difficult day burying the man who 9 days earlier, she thought that she had decades to spend her life with.
The past year has cruelly deprived people of the rights to grieve in the normal fashion. It's also denied people the opportunity for their usual levels of self-care. One does not discount the other.

It's yet another out-of-touch, pointless, cumbersome piece of stupidity from the government causing more hinderance or confusion than good at a point where the real good is being done by the season and a surprisingly effective vaccine programme.

Againstmachine · 10/04/2021 22:26

The ignorance of the science among the "give me freedom" crowd is quite worrying.

There is no such thing as "the science" scientists believe lots of different things.

Good thing we have known liars Whitty and vallance looking after us.

Completely agree. So many people at so little personal risk from covid have made huge sacrifices, and apparently are still selfish if they want to make proper use of services the government has said can reopen.

Hairdressers slam new 'discriminatory' Covid rules which will impact black customers
EXCLUSIVE: New guidelines say all hairdressers must reduce the time customers spend in their chairs so any services offered should be "short and basic" treatments- but hairdressers say that will disadvantage black customers

As hairdressers prepare to reopen their doors on Monday there are new Government guideline they must adhere to.

Under new rules salons must reduce the time customers spend in their chairs so any services offered should be "short and basic".

This means that hairdressers are no longer allowed to do 'long treatments' such as highlights and any other services that may take time.

This includes offering braiding, hair relaxing treatments, hair weaves and hair extensions which are very popular with black customers.

Michael Styles has run a black hair salon in Willesden, north west London, for more than 10 years

he told the Mirror that the new rules are 'discriminatory' and said it would have a devastating effect on the black hair industry.

"Whoever came up with these rules knows little about the hairdressing industry and nothing about the black hair industry," he said

How are we suppose to run a business if we can't offer the treatment our customers want?

"Black hair is complex and you can't just offer a wash and blow dry as most hair will need some sort of treatment.

"The most popular treatments my customers ask for will take a minimum of two hours so it won't be short and basic."

Michael's creative styles have turned heads and won him more than 25 awards in the last decade due to the intricacy of his work.

The guidance states that if longer procedures such as braiding or massages are being done salon workers should "consider how the length of the appointment could be minimised".

But Michael said this is impossible with some of the work he does.

He said: "A lot of women ask for a weave which takes a couple of hours and if they want single braid extensions that can take between eight and hours. Plus there will be two people working on their head to speed things up so it can't be minimised any more.

Maintaining black hair takes time and can't be rushed.

"We can't just wash and go.

"These rules are discriminatory against black hairdressers and need to be looked at again. All hair matters."

The beauty industry has taken a battering as hairdressers, barbers, beauty salons and nail bars were among the last to open in July last year after the first lockdown began in March.

They then had to close again in November which means they have been shut for business for a total of almost nine months.

Michael added: "I've lost so much money because of the lockdown and it's so unfair I'll have to turn people away and lose even more business because of these rules.

Carole Scott from Harlesden, north west London, has been a mobile hairdresser for over 30 years so travels to her customers' homes to treat their hair

She said the Government needs to 'tear up' the rules and write them again.

"They are ridiculous and will affect my work as most of my clients are black," she said.

It takes a long time to treat black hair and after months of being in lockdown my clients will definitely need things like conditioning treatments and relaxers which take a long time.

"I have one client who wants a weave which will take six hours so that means I have to turn the work down

"These rules discriminate against black people.

"I have white and Asian clients who usually want highlights so I can't do their hair either.

"I've not been able to earn a penny during the lockdown and now there are so many rules in place that means I can work but can't work either
