Can the 40-49 age group now book their vaccine?

Sister’s boyfriend (43) was able today to book his vaccine by entering his details on the national booking site (he is Derby based). Sister late 30s tried too but it said she was not eligible. Her husband tried last week and was also not eligible. Just wondered if anyone else has tried in the 40s age group and been able to book?

47 and had mine Saturday. I’m a bit late compared to a lot of friends who are also in their 40s. This is Warwickshire. One friend in Leicestershire is 49 and not been called yet. Guess it is all to do with how many people in the the older groups are being done. I imagine the 45 and overs will be called by the end of the week.

DinosaurDiana · 05/04/2021 16:55

DB is 43 and he can’t book.

Someone on another thread helpfully put a BBC link to see how vaccines were doing in your area. Where I am, only 77% over 50s done in Greenwich, London, so that would explain why, in my 40s, I’ve still not been invited yet (gotta love this postcode lottery Hmm).

The ones I know who have got it (seemed to have all told me this weekend!) at my age (40s) and also in their 30s/20s, went to Guys hospital vaccination centre at London Bridge and said they were unpaid carers and no questions asked. Apparently that loophole has been closed although some said they still got theirs last week. All those people are wfh as well, which explains why they could go, I guess. Have had to bite my tongue about how I really feel about that!

I keep being told (mostly on MN) that it is fairer/easier to go by ages rather than professions but it’s getting bloody hard to keep a brave face on and keep going in to work, when even the ages ‘queue’ is not being followed.

As a teacher (and with Psoriasis), to say I am not impressed, is an understatement! Grin

Elzbells · 05/04/2021 17:08

I'm in Herts and got a text inviting me for a vaccine this morning. 45 and no health conditions.

puffinkoala · 05/04/2021 17:09

My area has done 93% of over 50s. So I suppose they'll concentrate on doing second doses. My mum's area has done a similar % of over 50s and she has been called a bit earlier for her second dose, though only a few days.

Ideasplease322 · 05/04/2021 17:20

This makes me so cross, why are people try8 g to cheat the system and speak in before their age group is announced?

Just bloody wait your turn.

ZenNudist · 05/04/2021 17:24

Friend in Cumbria (42) got it, no underlying health condition not a key worker not a carer. I can't in Manchester.

Schulte · 05/04/2021 17:25

Yup makes me cross too, most of my friends have gone down the ‘unpaid carer’ route. Many of them younger than me. I’m patiently waiting and starting to feel like that’s a stupid thing to do now!

Etulosba · 05/04/2021 17:26

They are hardly trying to cheat the system if they are getting called in by their GP.

It's just the luck of the draw.

Schulte · 05/04/2021 17:27

Although as I said on another thread, perhaps a bit of a wait is a good thing until they’ve found out more about the possible risks with AZ.

Etulosba · 05/04/2021 17:27

They have removed the carer option now. Apparently, it was being abused.

Schulte · 05/04/2021 17:28

They were very much not being called by their GP. They claimed to be carers and went to the mass vaccination centre.

Ideasplease322 · 05/04/2021 17:29

I have heard so many people lying about being carers, trying to book appointments before their age group is released, WhatsApp messages going ground encouraging people to book long before they are entitled.

It’s crazy. How hard is it to watch the website, see when your age group is released and then book.

People turn up for appointments they aren’t entitled to, are asked for proof of their age, can’t give it and the appointment is wasted.

This pandemic has brought out the best and the worst in us.

ChloeDecker · 05/04/2021 17:32

It's just the luck of the draw.

It shouldn’t be though.

And they haven’t removed the unpaid carer option now but are instead directing it to only GPs administering rather than vaccination centres too, who weren’t checking. And yes, it was very much abused, sadly!

Rosehip10 · 05/04/2021 17:37

@Etulosba A national vaccination programme should not not run on a "luck of the draw" basis Hmm

Rosehip10 · 05/04/2021 17:40

And yes, "the unpaid carer" option online with no checks etc at the mass hubs has led to large amounts of people taking the piss - this is why the option has been removed and said unpaid carers need to go via GPs...

User27aw · 05/04/2021 17:41

I agree. If gps have spare vaccines the should send it to the hubs and then the national booking system could go down the age range maybe one year at a time. At the moment all the spares seem to be going to people 20 years younger than me.

I'm in Greenwich too and lots of people in their early 40s were invited late March - all registered with the same GP surgery who apparently was ahead... At least my two friends who had theirs have no pre-existing conditions. I'm in one of the more deprived corners of the borough though and expect take up in general to be lower here so it's possible the GP surgery had a lot of vaccines left to use up and no one else from groups 1-9 was coming forward.

Ceara · 05/04/2021 17:57

@lemons1571, my DH is nearing 50 and obese (but nowhere near obese enough for group 6) and not in the best health, and I am worried enough about him even though we are both WFH and our only exposure is school aged DC. Must be v difficult knowing your DH is in a public facing job. Fingers crossed for you that it's not too much longer until vaccination and he stays well.

Apparently in our rural local authority area 1 in 3 under 50s have had their jab already. I would be surprised if there are so many who work in NHS/social care or are CEV or have group 6 CV conditions or qualify as unpaid carers. All our 40s friends locally seem to have had it for one reason of another. I begin to feel like a mug for waiting patiently for our turn.

Lemons1571 · 05/04/2021 18:03

@Tealightsandd he’s not in group 6 despite several underlying conditions and obesity. So he’s vulnerable but “not enough”. We have now written to the gp practice laying out his situation and job, and hoping for the best.

GP is rubbish though so not holding our breath. The practice refused to take my fathers phone call about the vaccine (he just wanted to clarify where he was supposed to go) which resulted in him missing his appointment (just had to guess where to go as the practise has an identical name to a local hospital and he picked the wrong one!). So us hoping they can prioritise the vaccine based on clinical need is likely to be cuckoo land.

Lemons1571 · 05/04/2021 18:06

@Ceara as @middleager said, resentment is setting in. And disengagement. Like fuck am I going to engage with registering all our LFT results on gov.uk, if healthy 20 somethings are being vaxxed in some areas while my vulnerable late 40’s DH is left on the forgotten heap.

queenofthenorthwest · 05/04/2021 18:12

Apologies - should I be booking online or trying to? Or wait to be contacted?

How old are you?
daisiesinmay · 05/04/2021 18:20

queenofthenorthwest The website will only let you book if you're in groups 1-9 so 50 plus I think

BunsyGirl · 05/04/2021 18:21

As a 45 year old asthmatic with previous hospital admissions, I am getting more and more frustrated by the number of 30 and 40 year olds with no underlying health issues that are being vaccinated. As my last hospital admission was more than ten years ago my GP has refused to vaccinate me. Ironically, I needed a hospital admission 12 months ago when my GP refused to see me due to Covid but our local hospital was so overstretched that I struggled on at home.
