Can the 40-49 age group now book their vaccine?

Summergirl76 · 04/04/2021 22:16

Sister’s boyfriend (43) was able today to book his vaccine by entering his details on the national booking site (he is Derby based). Sister late 30s tried too but it said she was not eligible. Her husband tried last week and was also not eligible. Just wondered if anyone else has tried in the 40s age group and been able to book?

They look to be doing say 242k a day dose 1.
So that is going to move quite slowly.
If our area had continued even at that rate it would have got to dp pretty quickly as 42 and they are on 44 or under now. So really frustrating.
It would make less difference to people if unlocking werent happening but we will be affected by other school parents going inside pubs in may? And back to gyms and hairdressers very soon. Those vaxxed are even more likely to go. But they will be very likely to take their unvaxxed kids without masks into these places too.
1/1000 risk of death at 40. When you consider theres say 500 kids at school so 1000 parents - obviously less as siblings and say 1/4 are vaxxed.

I do fear that the rollout of first vaccines is going to massively slow down now. I think that's why we're hearing nothing about it. And if that's the case then it will actually be horrendously unfair that some areas have been merrily vaccinating 20 and 30-somethings, leaving much older adults to wait.

Yep

@Tealightsandd I’m an asthmatic who qualifies for the flu jab, unfortunately the vast majority of asthmatics aren’t eligible despite being classed as vulnerable (though it seems some GPs have gone against guidance and vaccinated them all), so I’ve just got to wait for them to get to my age group

More bad news. The 1st doses will slow down even more according to this article.

I would not place too much reliance on the article. SAGE analysis completely ignores supply and focuses on the slowest possible pace needed to meet the July commitment.

I have done some back of the envelope calculations (using the Scotland's leaked delivery schedule and adjusting it for whole of UK) and, based on my subjective estimates:

  • In April 2021 UK will have enough Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for the population in the 45-49 age bucket. The roll out will start around April 19. People may not be able to get vaccinated locally and may have to travel to regional hubs.
  • Under 45s will start getting vaccinated in early May.
  • The roll out of the second doses will continue as planned. We have already got enough (or nearly) Pfizer and ongoing local AZ supply to finish the vaccinations we have already started.

We will know if if my guess is right or wrong pretty soon.

HSHorror · 06/04/2021 22:21

Yeah i had felt it was all a bit of a lie so that everyone would go back to work.
It doesnt make sense as the cev will take till early may to do dose 2. Then 50s in jun etc. So all the other adults would be after that. If they are closing the mass vax centres. Will those reopen if the economy reopens but logically we shouldn't release everything till at least 80% vaxxed which is probably almost up to the kids

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 07/04/2021 11:15

I’m late 40’s and just had a text message from my GP to book the vaccination (West Yorkshire).

Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 11:19

In America they're onto 16 and 17 year olds in some areas. Biden has a target of every adult over 18 to have their 1st dose by 19 April. They're doing Pfizer and Moderna on the 3 week schedule. So when America opens up - around the same timeline as us - they really will be opening up safely.

Their population is around 350 million.

wintertravel1980 · 07/04/2021 11:56

We do not have the same vaccine supply as the US. Pfizer, Moderna, J&J are all US companies with major local production capabilities.

I do not think we could have done a better job with the vaccines. Where we are now is already pretty good.

Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 12:01

It's too late for this, but it's a lesson to learn that we too should have production companies. We should be investing in local manufacturing, we should be more self sufficient, we should boost our local economies.

EmergencyHydrangea · 07/04/2021 12:05

I'm early 40's and got my appointment letter today.

Eccle80 · 07/04/2021 12:08

They might have opened it up to younger age groups, but have vaccinated a lower proportion of their population with at least one dose, 40% adults and 75% of 65+ compared to over 60% of adults and about 95% of our 65+.

From what I have read Biden has said all adults will be eligible by 19th April rather than that they will be vaccinated, and their most vulnerable are less likely to be protected than ours

Freshprincess · 07/04/2021 12:10

US have stormed ahead if they hit that target, fair play to them.

I do think we have done a sterling job overall. My frustrations are really on a personal level as I’m 49 and I’m hearing people much younger than me getting jabbed. My personal risk level is low and I know I’m only a few weeks away.

If they had said 50 plus, then teachers/police/other high risk jobs, then go in age order it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

Glad they seem to have closed the ‘unpaid carer’ Loophole. It’s massively unfair.

Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 12:11

I think you might be right about their most vulnerable. I hope access improves for them. Also for our 40s group (across the board instead of postcode lottery).

Eccle80 · 07/04/2021 12:16

It feels like there is a risk Biden has gone for the great headlines of saying everyone is eligible, but actually one thing we have done well (for the most part, other than my personal bugbear about asthmatics!) is focussing on those most at risk first rather than using limited supplies on anyone who wants it.

Nootkah · 07/04/2021 15:32

Most people I know 40+ in my local area have in the last couple of days received appointment letters for next week. South East Wales.

I feel exactly the same Surrounded by gps who have been merrily vaccinating away here But no sign for me at 49++++
daisiesinmay · 07/04/2021 15:52

Me too sleepwouldbenice Also 49, and no sign of it here. I'd like a date, even if it's in a few weeks time, it's the not knowing I especially find hard

My three daisies and sleepwouldbenice. I'm very nearly 50, and get increasingly fed up of seeing younger people vaccinated around me. (I don't begrudge them, just would like to know when I'll get one).
At this rate, I'll actually be 50 before I get offered one as a 40+ year old (does that bump me up the priority list?)

LoudestCat14 · 07/04/2021 19:39

@UserTwice

I agree it's really annoying seeing how your vaccine access seems to be virtually a lottery now. I'm very nearly 50, and know of many many people younger than me (no health conditions or other reasons why they should get priority) who've been vaccinated. I understand that vaccinating anyone is better than vaccinating no one, but it makes no sense to an individual on the ground!
Exactly this. I'm 49 and in a north London borough and I've not had mine yet and it's really dispiriting to hear people in their 30s are now getting it elsewhere.
Runnerduck34 · 07/04/2021 19:43

Im 50 this month, out of interest tried to book yesterday on nhs website, it said I wasn't eligible.

landofgiants · 07/04/2021 20:30

Just had a text from NHSWales, vaccine is booked for a few weeks time which is good news. Hopefully others will have their patience rewarded soon.

Bit of an ironic 50th birthday present 😁

I always joked I might get missed off the list as I moved from 40s to 50s. Think it might be turning into reality!
