Canada pauses AZ vaccines for under 55s (and says women most at risk)

Please tell me this isn’t something to worry about: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/30/canada-suspends-use-of-astrazeneca-covid-vaccine-for-those-under-55

Speaking as a woman in her 30s who was immunised 4 days ago (article tells us the risk is for young women 4 - 20 days after vaccination), I’m panicking now. Yes I know it’s rare but so is dying of Covid in my age group so I’m wondering if I’ve made a huge mistake.

By the way I’m very pro vaccine and leapt on the chance to get one. I’m just feeling so anxious now.

Howmanysleepsnow It isn’t connected to the pill. It is a different t type of clotting.

anyoldtime · 04/04/2021 11:56

Mumtwoboys90 Did you go to A&E or your GP? I also had a four day headache and bruising.

mumsneedwine · 04/04/2021 12:20

I see these issues and all I think is 'if you don't want to use it then we do so please send spare doses to UK now'. US should send all AZ doses to Brazil as they are just going to let them go out of date in a fridge.
Don't have vaccine if don't want it. It's very simple. But I believe the scientists when they tell me it's safe. Weird how the only at cost vaccine is being pilloried while the ones people are making loads of money from aren't. Even though clots still happening after those vaccines too.
Just don't let precious vaccines go to waste when they can save so many lives.

Onesunnydayiniceland · 04/04/2021 12:22

The sort of clots and the combination of low platelets are not seen with the other vaccines

mumsneedwine · 04/04/2021 12:24

Yes they are. Look at Pfizer research data and they are there too. In virtually the same numbers per vaccine.

dividedwefall · 04/04/2021 12:25

Is there any chance the spike protein might be causing it then? Michael Yeadon alluded to it being sticky in his interview the other day. If both vaccines with completely different modus operandi cause the same very rare reaction then maybe the output is the issue, not the input?

I am not saying this is what is happening, just wondering that is all.

mumsneedwine · 04/04/2021 12:32

@dividedwefall could well be. Although all viruses causing clotting issues so might just be that. And no correlation between any jab and clotting. Clotting cases occur all the time normally and in fact cases in vaccinated people are less than in general population. So might even prevent clotting ! Bare statistics are dangerous.

Schulte · 04/04/2021 12:32

EMA and I believe the MHRA too have been pretty clear that these events have NOT been seen with the Pfizer vaccine. If you claim they have, then please send a link to a reputable source.

MRex · 04/04/2021 12:37

These cases have occurred with covid also, so I've been wondering as well if it could be some sort of rare reaction to covid antibodies.
I've also wondered if there could be a link with rare NSAID reactions as those can cause low platelets, all listed under the side effects.
There are so few though that it could also still be old covid cases, a few would have happened anyway regardless of covid etc.

DinosaurDiana · 04/04/2021 12:38

I’ve had both doses and I’m under 55.

No they shouldn’t!

That is what happened with Thalidomide. It is shameful.
If the AZ isn’t fit for wealthy countries populations, it cannot be given to poorer countries!!!

Mumtwoboys90 · 04/04/2021 13:15

@anyoldtime i went to urgent care as the gp had no appointments and similar to what you said i literally was scared to go to sleep after reading the 4 day headache advice but i do have bad anxiety and ocd i just needed to get checked out

I don’t know what your data sources are but according to the MHRA these thrombosis events associated with thrombocytopenia were not seen with the Pfizer vaccine www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

A close friend aged 39 is currently in hospital on the stroke ward with a blood clot on her brain as a result of the vaccine. We met for a walk on Tuesday and the next day she phoned me to ask about symptoms of a blood clot (I've had three previously). I advised her to go to A&E and she messaged me this morning with her news 😢. I suspect the government isn't reporting what's actually happening in the UK.

I had my vaccine in Feb but have been taking a daily prophylactic dose of anti-coagulants for three years because of my past history...

I think there's plenty of evidence that the balance of risks in over 65 year olds favours the vaccine.

Mumtwoboys90 · 04/04/2021 13:54

@mudpiesfortea that is so sad i hope she will be ok god thats just awful and actually really concerning that this is being kept quiet?!
what symptoms did she have? was it long after she had the vaccine (im assuming it was AZ)
i dont even feel that reassured ive been cjecked especially as they say up to day 20 after

AliceMadHatter · 04/04/2021 13:57

@mudpiesfortea I hope your friend will be OK. I was just going to ask the same questions as @Mumtwoboys90

anyoldtime · 04/04/2021 13:58

Let’s wait and see.

I have a sinking feeling a lot more is going to come to light.

Sunshinegirl82 · 04/04/2021 14:01

I hope your friend recovers quickly.

I'd be interested to know if the hospital/doctors have directly linked her condition to having received the vaccine? Or is that an assumption?

Given that this individual is in hospital and, I'm assuming, the issue has been reported to the MHRA (it would be pretty odd if it hasn't been and the individual can make the report herself) I don't think it's really fair to say it's being "hidden". Are people expecting headlines on each individual?

She had the vaccine about 4 days before seeing me. Her symptoms were a sore calf to start, which is why she asked me (my first DVT - caused by the pill - was in my calf). At first the hospital said it was related to an injury in her back (she had also recently pulled a muscle). She went back and forth to A&E over this past week before finally being admitted to the stroke ward with a blood clot on the brain. The dr's said it was probably a side effect from the vaccine as she doesn't have any pre-existing conditions that would explain this. Plus, the clots people are experiencing because of AZ aren't your 'normal' DVTs, it's a rare form that is found in the brain.

Oh god, I hope she is okay. It's just awful to think how many younger people this might be happening to. It does look like it might be being under reported :-( I hope she fully recovers quickly.

How can people make an informed decision if it's not in the news? That's what people have relied on for pandemic death statistics, why not vaccine risks?
mudpiesfortea · 04/04/2021 14:15

@dividedwefall - this is exactly why I wanted to share her story here. If we don't know about potential risks, how can we make informed decisions. It's especially concerning if this is something disproportionately affecting women - as if we haven't already had a shit deal with increased caring responsibilities and redundancies over the past 12 months...

Sunshinegirl82 · 04/04/2021 14:19

My understanding was that the particularly rare clotting event that has been identified as potentially linked was caused by low platelets and that symptoms included bruising etc and being very unwell? Pain in the calf seems more like a symptom of a DVT?
