Canada pauses AZ vaccines for under 55s (and says women most at risk)

Please tell me this isn’t something to worry about: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/30/canada-suspends-use-of-astrazeneca-covid-vaccine-for-those-under-55

Speaking as a woman in her 30s who was immunised 4 days ago (article tells us the risk is for young women 4 - 20 days after vaccination), I’m panicking now. Yes I know it’s rare but so is dying of Covid in my age group so I’m wondering if I’ve made a huge mistake.

By the way I’m very pro vaccine and leapt on the chance to get one. I’m just feeling so anxious now.

@Mumtwoboys90 also check your platelets were above 140

Mumtwoboys90 · 03/04/2021 23:40

sorry just seen you said that in your last post Grin im tired and going a bit mad!!!

Mumtwoboys90 · 03/04/2021 23:43

it says d dimer

anyoldtime · 03/04/2021 23:44

The D-diner should be less than 500 (they they use the same units as me)

also check your platelets were above 140

Can something be done if the above numbers aren't as they should be?

I'm shaking with fear here.

bluegre · 03/04/2021 23:45

@Mumtwoboys90 I'm impressed that a&e did the coagulation test straight away. It means that other places are looking too and doctors are aware (I'm assuming we live in different areas).
This week I'd had a bit of push back from doctors when I've called and asked about vaccine status and them to send more samples. Not always but a few times.

Mumtwoboys90 · 03/04/2021 23:46

@anyoldtime im so sorry if im making you feel worse 😔 have you jad your first dose recently or bot sure wether to have it? its so horrible isnt it

bluegre · 03/04/2021 23:46

@Mumtwoboys90 these numbers are good

anyoldtime · 03/04/2021 23:47

I had the first one. I won't be taking a second one. I'm in my 40s with young children. I am terrified. Simply terrified.

Mumtwoboys90 · 03/04/2021 23:48

@bluegre yes the doctor said they had been told what to look/test for specifically and that they had seen several worried patients similar to me recently

Mumtwoboys90 · 03/04/2021 23:50

@bluegre thank you so much for your help Flowers

bluegre · 03/04/2021 23:51

@anyoldtime yes The D-dimer is specific for detected clot formation in blood. If it's more than 500 then further tests to find cause and treatment (it is treatable) will be done.
You don't just walk about with abnormal clotting, your very unwell, enough to go to a&e.

anyoldtime · 03/04/2021 23:53

bluegre Thank you. What about the platelet count number? Is that treatable too?

bluegre · 03/04/2021 23:56

@Mumtwoboys90 I'm glad your feeling better and everything was okay.

@anyoldtime I don't no what to say. If I found out you caught COVID, I'd feel incredibly terrible. I'm not a doctor, I work in the lab and not may people really understand what I do. I don't no the patients background or how they present because that's not my job, I look at the results and assist the medical staff on what to test or look for. I don't no everything and I definitely don't no myself even what to do with regards to the vaccine.

bluegre · 03/04/2021 23:58

@anyoldtime platelet count falling is a indication of a LOT of diseases but yes also very treatable

anyoldtime · 04/04/2021 00:01

bluegre If its treatable that is something at least.
Thank you for your contributions to this thread.
I'm so scared. I'm not sleeping with worry. When I do sleep, I wake numerous times throughout the night. I'm exhausted and on the verge of tears all the time. I feel I have a ticking clock and I'm not going to be here for my kids.

bluegre · 04/04/2021 00:20

@anyoldtime I understand, there's a lot of unknown and it's not an easy yes/no decision. The media does make it harder, every time I hear something about side effects I just want more detail and proper research findings. But it's too early for too much concrete data.
If it makes you feel better everyone I work with have had both doses (of Pfizer). I wish I could ease you anxiety but I know that "it will all be fine" doesn't help the feeling go away. Your feelings are valid, wait a month and see what happens might be best if you aren't sure either way.
I don't want to say go and talk to your GP because you sound like your anxiety is really getting to you but they may also help ease your worries.

QuietBatPeople1 · 04/04/2021 00:28

@anyoldtime I’m sorry to hear what you are going through. I haven’t had the vaccine as I’ve literally turned 40 yesterday but I’m very scared of COVID so feel a little bit like you- everyday is like a ticking time bomb (or atleast feel that way). I’ve completely stopped reading or listening to the news. Also everyday I go to bed with no symptoms of Covid I tell myself that ‘tomorrow is another day’ but I’ve made it through today.
Hope you get a better nights sleep today.

Tealightsandd · 04/04/2021 00:33

Isn't there more risk getting in a car than this still very rare clot?

AvaCallanach · 04/04/2021 00:42

@anyoldtime
Platelets of 317 is higher average. The expected normal range is 150-400. Those numbers are nothing to worry about.

My ds got itp (different platelet problem) from a flu vaccine. By 1 week after the jab his platelets were at 1. Yes, 1. Please stop frightening yourself. Do you shake in fear before every car journey? It's out of all proportion to the risk.

AvaCallanach · 04/04/2021 00:45

Sorry - I see I have conflated anyoldtime and mumtwoboys there. Apologies.

bluegre · 04/04/2021 07:36

I don't think you can compare a car journey to side effects of a vaccine. I know the risks when I get in my car, I wear my seat belt and put my DC in a car seat, I think about safety standards when buying a car.
However this is something that's just come out and like I said my trust has just started to monitor it. Hopefully in the next month either it will be on the news or my manager will say it was too small numbers to worry about. The problem I have (and I think others do to) is I don't no how small the numbers are compared to chance being serious sick with COVID. 4 patients in 1 trust, not a city mostly small towns and countryside, over 1 weekend. It's more than the amount of COVID patients we have.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 04/04/2021 07:57

I do wish people wouldn’t keep comparing risks with car journeys as if they were quite a dangerous thing to do. The risk of death from a car journey in the UK is about 2 per billion miles. So if this vaccine side effect is a one in a million risk then it’s the same as a journey of five hundred miles. If it’s one in one hundred thousand then it’s the same as a journey of five thousand miles.

Are people requesting blood tests? Or are they all very unwell?

Mumtwoboys90 · 04/04/2021 11:25

i didnt request it just went because of the 4 day headache and an awful tummy pain and they did bloods without me asking

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/04/2021 11:37

Young women? Those of an age most likely to be on the combined pill? That increases incidence of these types of clotting events by 750% (more so for mercilon/ Marvelon etc, which are infrequently used in the uk on NICE guidance. I wonder if these are more widely used elsewhere?)
