Along with any other unnecessary travel abroad.

OP posts:

@Lentillover1900 I can assure you it's not fiction! I have called almost all of the dentists in my area (almost all because I didn't call the ones which said they were private only), and none of them are taking on new NHS patients. As a result, I have to spend nearly £300 for two fillings!

FoonySpucker · 25/03/2021 11:25

But how does that equate to there being absolutely no doctor or dentist appointments being available anywhere unless you pay?

Standrews · 25/03/2021 11:37

Whatever the reason for wanting to travel abroad, holiday, visiting friends or relatives, the main problem is what do we bring back with us from our travelling. I remember I usually got a cold or cough from air travel due to the re-cycled air conditioning. The though of WHAT might be travelling with me is scary.

Tzimi · 25/03/2021 12:21

@FoonySpucker Well, I used to be treated by an NHS dentist before I moved, and that was fine, as they were treating patients who were already registered with them under the NHS (after the last lockdown). But I've now moved to a different area, and the local dentists aren't taking on any more NHS patients, as there is such a large backlog of patients. So, I have to get treated privately, which costs about 3x as much! Luckily, I havn't needed any medical treatment, so can't comment on whether GP appointments are available in my area.

AnaofBroceliande · 25/03/2021 13:23

Evidence?

Oh, I forgot! It's the Court of MN with posters appointing themselves judge, jury and executioner of things don't suit their narrative. Hmm

AnaofBroceliande · 25/03/2021 13:26

Because if you can't find a NHS doctor or dentist to do the work or treat, then you have to pay. Duh. The wait list for joint replacements is now years long in some places. If you can't endure the pain you have to go private and pay. Even before Covid, the wait list for CAMHS in many areas is years long, my child's private psychiatrist has never been busier. It's got far worse now because Covid is king.

FoonySpucker · 25/03/2021 13:27

@Tzimi

Apologies Blush - you had responded to another poster and it was them that stated categorically that no appointments were available.

I hope you manage to find an appointment soon.

WouldBeGood · 25/03/2021 13:40

I had to pay for a private consultation for investigation into a condition which was debilitating and potentially malignant. The NHS had cancelled my referral cos Covid.

Luckily it was not malignant, and because it was so debilitating and I’d been waiting so long the consultant took pity on me and performed a procedure not currently supposed to be happening, having referred me back into the NHS. But I was very lucky as I was able to find £150 for the appointment and was able to articulate my concerns.

DP had to have a tooth extracted due to lack of dental checkups cos Covid and suffered terribly with pain and an infection in it.

DD has bad wisdom tooth pain but no help.

DF, 88, been referred to a hearing clinic. Not on for the foreseeable cos Covid.

My uncle, 88, died a fortnight ago from advanced cancer, undiagnosed cos Covid. He’d been unwell for months.

Phone appointments at my GP and you can’t arrange in advance now. Need to join the daily battle of ringing at 8.30.

NessieNel · 25/03/2021 13:40

So many people just see our figures going down and think it is almost over. That is what we want to maintain, not people going abroad to countries with high rates of infection and mortality, and then bringing covid back to the UK. Patience.

Parker231 · 25/03/2021 13:43

Many surgeries were postponed as the operation theatres were converted into Covid wards.

Xenia · 25/03/2021 13:47

My son is driving for 90 minuytes each way to use our NHS dentist and hsa waited a year for his NHS route canal treatment which is going to cost him over £200 (about 20 hours of his work probably more once you add his tax and NI on). He could not find a local NHS dentist where he moved to 18 months ago.
I just paid over £200 with more to go for my son who had to travel to London to get treatment for something the NHS does not cover. In fact just about nothing we have needed inthe last 6 years has been available on the NHS although I am lucky not to get sick so far.

Now is the time we need to take a long hard look at this and eg let people pay 20% less income tax and opt out of the NHS in return and that kind of thing.

Parker231 · 25/03/2021 14:02

Xenia - the reason your son has probably not been able to access an NHS dentist and NHS medical treatment is due to a huge shortage of dentists and doctors. We need a huge investment in these services not less so that people can have the treatment they need. The Tories keep lying about recruitment but in reality there are more vacancies than ever before.

The population has increased but NHS services haven’t kept pace.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2021 14:47

his NHS route canal treatment which is going to cost him over £200

It may be 20 hours of work at minimum pay @Xenia (makes a bit of a nonsense of all the money you spent on his education) but paid for privately it would probably be ten times that. Dentists don’t come cheap.

Charles and Camilla currently are in Greece.

They are clearly exempt from transmitting a virus.

Isn't it funny how the virus knows who will bring new variants back and who won't?

QuidditchQueen · 25/03/2021 18:42

Angry
Another reason if one is even needed to get rid of the whole shower.

jessstan2 · 25/03/2021 20:58

They are only there for two days, some official thing, not a 'jolly'. They will be no sooner there when they have to turn around and come home again, no time to relax. Neither will they be hanging about in crowded airports.

WouldBeGood · 25/03/2021 21:12

It’s not right to have one rule for “vips” snd one for plebs

laurensam · 25/03/2021 22:27

I wonder how many people would complain about restrictions if the virus affected babies or young children, which in it could with all the mutatations get a hold and attack youngsters

It's likely going to become endemic. Lots of diseases are endemic, but they're usually in other non-Western countries that are poor so no one cares.
WouldBeGood · 25/03/2021 22:55

It’s true is be more worried if children and babies were dying, and not very old people. That’s a normal reaction. But it doesn’t matter, as we have a very effective vaccine. Which was sold to us as the way out, and should be

SunnySideAndMarmite · 25/03/2021 23:59
@IloveJKRowling Life isn't just about what's essential. We also need to factor in some things which may not be essential, but are fun to do, and make life worth living. I appreciate that some people probably get some perverse pleasure from being miserable & denying themselves any enjoyment, but I'm not one of them.
I think life would be a lot more pleasant if we did actually focus only on what is essential. Might stop screwing up the planet, too.
But then I see social contact as essential.

Less convinced on travelling abroad, even if it is to visit family. If that's the one thing that has to be banned for longer to allow other social contact to happen and life to be more normal here, so be it. I say that as someone who hasn't seen my family since Christmas 2019 despite being in the same country (every time we tried to meet it was banned again).

It does affect babies and children, there are some who have been very ill and hospitalised with Covid-19. The virus is no respecter of age, anyone can catch it, it's just that, mostly, it is less severe for children and young people.
GiveMeNovocain · 26/03/2021 03:46

If it affected children and young people we wouldn't be in lockdown. If you believe that society gives two hoots about children in all this you haven't looked at the news. We've sacrificed the younger generation without a thought. We've abandoned the older generation to loneliness and have massive delays on diagnosis and treatment. People on the lowest wages have been exposed to the most risk in many cases. Turns out the people who matter most are the worried well who can afford to stay at home.
Tzimi · 26/03/2021 06:19

@SunnySideAndMarmite I don't understand your comment- most "essential" things are by their nature tedious & time consuming. So how could life be more pleasant if we only concentrated on these? Travelling abroad is one of the great pleasures in life, and it's also educational. We get to learn about different cultures, & how they do things. We learn about different wildlife, and about history. And we get to leave our problems behind, at least for a short time. How could this be a bad thing?

Stratfordplace · 26/03/2021 08:31

I don’t think anyone is on firm ground re youngsters considering the Government are quite happy to send 18 year olds off to fight wars all over the world.
