Can this be true? Tons of people lying to get vaccine.

My mum has just told me that my dodgy cousin (about 30) has just had his vaccine with all of his builder mates by lying and saying they are ‘unpaid carers’ on the nhs website. She said no one bothered to check any of them.
Firstly, how bloody outrageous of them pulling the wool over the vaccine centres eyes and secondly, why isn’t their any check, however minor?
I know we all need to get done eventually but this has really pissed me off.

Not that much different to all the tradesmen who've been claiming SEISS grants but working pretty much as normal.

The lack of checks re all things covid is pretty appalling really.

"Surely this should apply to single parents with young children"

Most children can go to relatives, friends or if there is no one else, foster carers. This isn't an option for adults or children with significant needs.

FedNlanders · 21/03/2021 16:47

I went to a walk in hun for carers. No appointments needed. No checks done.

bluebluezoo · 21/03/2021 16:49

Yep. Loads of people I know have done it. I haven’t, and have been told to tick the carers box on the website to get an appointment.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/03/2021 16:49

@Lentillover1900
When my GP and I discussed it the criteria was caring for a disabled or elderly person who would be significantly and disproportionately impacted if you (carer) were to become ill or be hospitalised.
Surely this should apply to single parents with young children

Well single parents where the other parent is absent and couldn't provide care and there's no immediate family who could provide care. Which makes it v messy in terms of proof. How do you prove you have no siblings / parents / close friends who could look after your child?

KOKOagainandagain · 21/03/2021 16:49

It's really not that hard to understand.

To be in group 6 you need to qualify as a carer whether in receipt of CA or not. To qualify first of all the person you care for has to be in receipt of certain benefits. Secondly you have to provide over 35 hours care per week.

It's easy to identify those who provide 35+ hours a week to those receiving qualifying benefits who receive less income than allowed because they will be eligible to CA. Information sharing will make this stream less.

Carers who provide 35+ hours a week care to those receiving qualifying benefits but don't receive CA because their income is too high can still provide proof.

I receive CA, my invitation letter referred to caring for clinically vulnerable, I have had a jab bit those I am carer for have not been invited. This is the issue.

We have a system that doesn't vaccinate the cared for who receive qualifying benefits whilst the entitled claim to be a carer because they shop for their Nan once a week. Vaccine entitlement aside this denigrates the real vulnerable and their careers. The entitled want the same benefits without the responsibility.

But at the same time you have to ask whether this is just a smoke and mirrors diversion and is an insignificant issue - like benefit fraud.

Let's all worry about vaccine avoidance by some and vaccine stealing by some and ignore the rest.

SinkGirl surely you should be getting DLA sign up for it

Mylovelyhorsee · 21/03/2021 16:50

Surely the more people vaccinated the better?

Hork · 21/03/2021 16:51

I tried booking as a carer but couldn’t do it online. Had to ring the 119 number to say I thought I was eligible and they asked me a number of questions. I wasn’t asked for proof at the vaccination centre though.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/03/2021 16:51

@Mylovelyhorsee

Yes but it's meant to be prioritising the most at risk first, not a free for all for those willing to lie
LittleMissAlmostPerfect · 21/03/2021 16:51

This is simply not true. You are quoting the criteria for carers' allowance.

My sister is listed as a carer as she does things for our mum. Mum is not on any benefits and sister has a full time job. Care amounts to a few hours a week- like putting the wheely bins out, driving her to appts sometimes and doing the garden.

yuyubooboo · 21/03/2021 16:51

It definitely happened in NI. Sadly.

MRex · 21/03/2021 16:51

There are many other reasons to be in group 6, including having underlying conditions! It's helpful to give whole facts please.

M1551nglink · 21/03/2021 16:51

@SleepingStandingUp I think I'm in group 8?

Might be

And sure as heck wouldn’t have been an option for me. Seriously.

MapleMay11 · 21/03/2021 16:56

My local lea ‘bagsied’ all the spare doses last weekend and booked at the teachers in my town in - that was last week and yet my mates who are police etc actually got turned away

Bagsied Grin

x2boys · 21/03/2021 16:57

Not really @Lentillover1900, I have a child with very complex needs severe autism, non verbal, challenging, behaviour at a special school etc etc if myself and my DH became ill and couldn't care for ,non of my family or friends would be able to care for him ,and he would need specialist care ,foster care ,so no not the same as a single parent with young children.

SheenMcQueen · 21/03/2021 16:58

My friend qualified as an unpaid carer because she has been dropping food shopping off to an older lady since lockdown began. The charity that she volunteered though told her she met the criteria.

I think the definition is quite 'loose'.

IdblowJonSnow · 21/03/2021 17:00

I was asked for evidence when I went and had to show the letter twice, to two different people.

peboh · 21/03/2021 17:01

In my area you have to provide officially nhs documents that state you're eligible (letter or text) and your ID to be allowed into the vaccination centre on the date of your appointment.

Also group 6 isn't just for carers. I've had the nhs text twice, once for being a carer and the 2nd for having an underlying health condition.

OldScrappyAndHungry · 21/03/2021 17:01

My friend is an unpaid carer and had to take her carer's allowance proof to get her vaccine - those who didn't have it were being turned away.

KOKOagainandagain · 21/03/2021 17:01

There are 'carers' and 'carers eligible for inclusion in group 6'

In the former are all parents and those who provide care to relatives. They are not in group 6.

The latter provide care to those receiving qualifying benefits and provide 35+ hours care a week. They are in group 6 whether or not they claim CA.

mam0918 · 21/03/2021 17:02

I cant have the vaccine but recieved an invite due to being a carer.

I dont see how you could just randomly say you are, proffesional or not there would be proof because caring (at a level that counts as being a carer) interfers with things like your ability to work (you have to care minimally at a part time job level or more to be classified a carer) so carers claim and are entitled to benefits which would be proof (unless underage so children/young teens but they can't recieve the vaccine anyway).

SleepingStandingUp · 21/03/2021 17:02

@Lentillover1900 but even your child could go to pretty much the first available foster carers. Id say mine would go to the local hospice but that can't happen if it's covid so we'd be needing a specialist foster carer or a hospital bed. And he's fairly straightforward- O2 and gastostromy , nothing like as hard as @x2boys for example
