26.8 million people vaccinated thread started 20th March

So with the release of figures as of Friday 19th March over half the adult population of the UK have had at least 1 vaccination.

The number of jabs given is March was phenomenal and its likely numbers will be lower for the next few weeks but even if its "only" 100-200k a day thats still more lives potentially being saved!

Those are good numbers!

Also great news about the Pfizer jab - a study has shown that it is effective in preventing 91% of Covid cases 6 months after the second jab and that it is highly effective against the SA variant. There are question marks over it's effectiveness against the Brazil variant but they are still confident that there was sufficient protection due to antibody levels being so high.

The other jabs are also undergoing long-term studies but Pfizer have been the first to report.

Look at these numbers, a massive fall in the number of people on ventilators

England has exceeded its previous best second dose rate by more than 100,000.

So we did 341,748 second doses yesterday? Incredible!!

MissConductUS · 01/04/2021 17:36

I couldn't find the daily statistics for the US yet, they seem to be a bit late today, but I did find an article that said that we're approaching 3 million jabs per day and that the Federal government is now shipping 27 million vaccine doses per week, a record.

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-29/u-s-vaccine-doses-head-for-3-million-a-day-as-supply-loosens

Cases are trending up too, which is very worrisome.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/04/2021 18:19

Hopefully with all that lovely jabbing going on they won’t translate into deaths.
How well do you think the targeting is working? Do you have large numbers of vulnerable people who are vaccine hesitant?

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 01/04/2021 20:09

Yesterday messages went out over social media that eligible people could get spare jabs at Walthamstow library.

The massive queue was all over the news last night.

They ended up jabbing nearly three thousand people there yesterday.

It makes me so happy to hear this because it is such a multicultural area. Also today it was reported that the hesitancy to the vaccine among BAME people has gone from 44% to 22% Smile

lurker101 · 01/04/2021 20:50

Fantastic @MissConductUS really impressed with the roll out since the federal Govt. got involved in providing more support to the states, it seems to have really improved things.

@MoChridhe that’s so great to read - especially love that they’ve vaccinated the Spanish workers. It’s something I have been thinking about recently. Once vaccines are available in sufficient supply following U.K. rollout I would like to see appointments offered to those in the Spanish regions neighbouring Gibraltar, and the ROI, because of the interdependencies.

Paddy1234 · 01/04/2021 23:16

Thanks Truly - I really hope the BAME take up the vaccine

buttery81 · 02/04/2021 07:56

Excellent news @Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum!

FannyCann · 02/04/2021 09:28

Thanks for those stats @CaveMum

It's worth remembering that many of the people on mechanical ventilation are likely to have been infected some time ago and are long term poorly. Eg Kate Garraway's husband - not sure if he is off ventilation now but he has been in ICU for a year.
My hospital is in the Southwest, where you can see the numbers are low. We have five in ICU (not necessarily all ventilated) but three have been in for over a month.

These long term cases will also, in some cases, translate into the death stats.

I think I'm trying to say (badly because I'm not a statistician) that it's great to see the dramatic fall in numbers, there will be a time lag of long term infections so a significant proportion of the lower numbers will be represented by infection acquired some time ago, so the overall reduced numbers are probably even better than one might think at first glance in terms of newly acquired infection

CaveMum · 02/04/2021 11:40

@FannyCann there was an ITV documentary a week or so ago about Kate Garraway and her husband, he’s still in hospital and making progress but is still very ill - he’s conscious but obviously has severe mobility issues and has been having very manic episodes. They did hope he might be able to come home in Feb this year but it’s been put back, and they say he could potentially be in hospital till the end of this year.

During the documentary Kate Garraway had builders in converting the downstairs of their home to include a large wet room and a bedroom with a hospital bed for Derek. The Drs said he was the worst affected person they’d seen that had survived.

Apologies for not answering this yesterday. I think it's going fairly well. According to the CDC 72% of those over 65 years of age have had at least one dose and 52% are fully vaccinated. It's harder to get good statistics on how many with comorbidities have been vaccinated, but base on my own experience in New York, it's also quite a lot. There is some controversy in the medical community here as many think we should have followed the lead of the UK and delayed second doses in order to get more of the CV their first dose sooner.

The vulnerable have been more eager to get it, which is natural given the increased risk of severe disease that they face, but I'm sure some have been hesitant anyway. Vaccine hesitance has been dropping across the board, which is very good news, but about 13% say they will never get it. I'll try really hard to be sympathetic when they turn up in A&E need supplemental O2 this fall. Smile

The UK has identified 30 cases of rare blood clot events following the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

This makes up 0.0002% of the 18.1 million doses given in the UK and is in line with the natural rate of blood clot occurrences.
