Summer holidays abroad?

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

I was hopeful but not now. Don't think it will be happening.

I am not booking anything.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 20/03/2021 11:13

Well, I've got a holiday booked beginning July (moved from 2020 - booked in 2019!!) but currently highly doubtful about going, but also thinking it's not the best idea anyway given how quickly the situation can change whilst you're abroad; I wouldn't want to suddenly have to pay to quarantine for example, nor bring one of the new variants back. It's a tricky situation particularly if you're a travel lover as I am.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2021 11:14

I've moved mine to next year. Can't see it happening.

Monkeytapper · 20/03/2021 11:15

I was hopeful (Tenerife) beginning of Aug, but not so much today after reading updates.

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:17

I was hopeful we'd be going, especially with the vaccine passport idea, but with the third wave going on in Europe I think it's a non starter. We priced going to Cornwall instead but for 2 weeks in a lodge it was nearly £4k!

Will the govt announce it on 12 April? I'd just rather know for sure-we haven't had a holiday abroad since 2019 😭

I was looking at Spain or Greece but now trying to make my peace with Devon. Booked weeks ago on booking.com and was going to cancel (free) if abroad allowed.
I wanted sunshine and have been vaccinated Blush

beela · 20/03/2021 11:24

I hope they don't let us, tbh. Holidays abroad are great, but surely international travel is half the problem when it comes to spread. Vaccines will be rolled out more widely worldwide by next year and fingers crossed the situation will be more under control, but it doesn't really feel like it is at the moment.

Well said. It would be a really stupid idea with all the new variants and other countries going at a slower pace with vaccination programmes. We’ll have to see if the government makes the right call this time.
bungobango · 20/03/2021 11:50

Sounds reasonable. I wanted go to my home country with my family but it starts to look like we are not. I might go alone to go to a "funeral".

MadeForThis · 20/03/2021 11:50

We are booked for end August. I haven't moved the flights yet but I don't expect to travel.

This. I love going on holidays as much as the next person and we're desperate to have a honeymoon but things need to be in really, really good place before we'll even look at going abroad. I understand so many people will have holidays rescheduled from last year. We had that option but chose to take a refund which is now in a separate account waiting to be used as soon as we feel its safe to book somewhere.
Lentillover1900 · 20/03/2021 11:56

I have booked for booked for 29th may!

No

17th may

motherrunner · 20/03/2021 11:59

I moved our July 2020 holiday to this July and have moved out again to next year. Although the vaccine roll out is going well in the Uk, I still feel uncomfortable with the idea of travelling abroad. We have booked two weeks on the South coast instead.

frozendaisy · 20/03/2021 12:00

We just can't see it's worth the money and kid's excitement to go somewhere which might have more restrictions still than here in summer holidays. What's the point?

Saying this the European vaccination programme might spring into full steam ahead action in the next month.

So want to go away on a plane. But not prepared to pay for restricted sunshine and booking pool times.

TinaYouFatLard · 20/03/2021 12:02

Can anyone tell me what the long term answer to international travel is? Surely there will always be new variants or new viruses. I can’t see that we will ever be able to travel freely again. What else can we do but vaccinate ourselves?

Cookerhood · 20/03/2021 12:03

We are booked to go away in september (moved from last year). I really want a holiday abroad but I do think with the current european wave it is unwise & unlikely. Of course in 2 months time it could look different if they get over this wave & get their vaccines into arms instead of sitting on the shelf.

We looked at UK prices this summer and thought "how much! Confused" rather add to the escape across a big ocean 2022 fund!
Bordois · 20/03/2021 12:03

Some countries are faring better than others wrt vaccines and cases so I think it might be similar to last summer with travel corridors.

Cookies2523 · 20/03/2021 12:05

Good luck trying to get a refund from TUI. We have had to take them to court to get ours.

RoseWineTime · 20/03/2021 12:06

I’m booked to go to Crete in the middle of august. There’s nearly 5 months between now snd then so hopefully things will be a lot better by then 🤞🤞🤞

Bordois · 20/03/2021 12:06

Prof Andrew Hayward, from Sage, said it was "unlikely" the government would want to encourage travel toEuropean countries currently experiencing high levels of coronavirus infections.

"I think it's unlikely that we would want to encourage travel to those countries whilst they have high levels of infection," he told Times Radio.

I just said same to the Mr. We came to the conclusion that the vaccine programme needs to be worldwide going well that's the only thing that can solve this. I know UK and Israel are storming ahead but until all are vaccinated it feels very national. We want to do a big hit USA tour with kids fingers crossed for 2022.
RoseWineTime · 20/03/2021 12:08

Hopefully they won’t have a high level of infections in the summer.
