Summer holidays abroad?

544 replies

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

@MrsGradyOldLady

I've booked Cornwall for this year but I can't really get excited about it. I would much prefer to go somewhere warm or to my partners home country. If we can travel abroad later this year we'll go like a shot.
Im pretty sure Cornwall this summer will be much riskier than some areas of Europe Confused

@TheRedBalloon

Will the govt announce it on 12 April? I'd just rather know for sure-we haven't had a holiday abroad since 2019 😭
The problem is nobody can say anything for sure as the situation is ever changing.
99victoria · 20/03/2021 13:05

Its not necessarily people booking holidays for this year. We booked in 2019 for a holiday in Greece in June 2020 - it was postponed, of course, and rolled over to this June/July. It was not an unreasonable decision on our part to book a holiday to Greece in October 2019! Why do people have to be so holier-than-thou?

We will both be vaccinate with both our jabs by then. We are in a position to be able to quarantine for the 10 days when we return and to pay for the tests if needed. If we are able to go then we plan to!

Scarlettpixie · 20/03/2021 13:05

I am booked for August (Spain) and hoping for it to be cancelled sooner rather than later. It was a trip booked in 2019 for 2020 (Florida) which I paid to amend and move to 2021 to avoid having to pay the balance last May. As it was they would have cancelled but I couldn’t (can’t) bear the uncertainty.

I am not sure if they Tui) waive the fee for amending if you change to a more expensive trip (last time we changed to a cheaper one) but if so, I might just move it to Spain 2022 with a view to re-amending if we decide we want to do Florida instead. We can’t decide on that until school confirm their inset days for summer 2022.

I do know that I don’t much fancy getting on a plane anytime soon. Maybe I should just cancel, loose the deposit and start afresh.

Cindersrellie · 20/03/2021 13:06

I'm confident they will open travel corridors like last year. Too much to gain from tourism not to.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/03/2021 13:06

Same here, m0therofdragons - it's a house swap so is at least completely flexible, and isn't until September/October

Happily, Florida have had the sense to work through this with common sense but few restrictions; pity the same sense doesn't apply here

m0therofdragons · 20/03/2021 13:07

My brother has flights booked for December - that will be 2.5 years since I last saw them (db dsis-in-law and nephew) so I really really hope they can come. Is not just about holidays for many of us.

tiredmum2468 · 20/03/2021 13:08

We were seriously considering booking for the summer however after today's news we probably won't
I know you can get a
Refund but it's a bit like what's the point of doing that if we probably can't go anyway.

HolmeH · 20/03/2021 13:09

I recon travel to the US might be allowed. They are steaming ahead on their vaccine programme.. people don’t just holiday in Europe. I also think Europe holidays will go ahead with certain restrictions & travel corridors etc

I hate this mumsnet attitude of everyone being foolish & selfish for booking holidays.. I don’t know anyone in real life who thinks like this..

Ozzie9523 · 20/03/2021 13:09

We’re booked for early August abroad, changed from last July. Was very hopeful it would go ahead but now not so sure. But then a lot can change in 5 months 🤞🤞🤞

m0therofdragons · 20/03/2021 13:09

@Puzzledandpissedoff this is the first package holiday we’ve booked for years through virgin and I’m so glad as it made it so much easier to move it! 9 of us going and planning to see my auntie and uncle who live there.

StepOutOfLine · 20/03/2021 13:10

If you think about this time last year...and then last summer....people holidaying abroad in droves. Factor in the Vax programme (especially for Brits) and I think it's highly likely holidays and foreign travel will go ahead.

m0therofdragons · 20/03/2021 13:11

Oh and our insurance carried over as it’s the same holiday with moved dates so fully covered for a pandemic with pre pandemic insurance.

motherrunner · 20/03/2021 13:11

I amended with TUI (to the previous posters who have mentioned them). I had to pay £200 though (£50 pp ‘admin charge’) 🙄

I don’t regret it though. I want to feel safe travelling abroad and I wouldn’t feel comfortable presently. I felt safe last year when we holidayed in Devon - travelled by car, self catering, just went to the beach and got takeaways each night. Looking forward to doing the same and the kids are excited about surfing again.

weebarra · 20/03/2021 13:12

We moved our July holiday to Mallorca (Scottish school holidays) from last year to this. I don't really want to go, although I'll have had my second vaccine by then.
I'm gutted but I can cope with a Scottish camping holiday I'm sure!

Ozzie9523 · 20/03/2021 13:14

@PradaBallbag

God I'm sick of saying this but all this who are saying they hope we're not allowed to travel until 2022, what about all of those people who rely on the tourism industry for their livelihood? There will be no airlines or tour operators left if we have yet another year of restrictions.

Holidays were allowed under certain rules last summer. I can't imagine it wouldn't be the same this summer with our vaccine programme going so well. Granted there might be restrictions and certain countries which are not allowed.

Honestly I think some people are loving all of the gloom. I have two foreign holidays booked for this year and I will 100% be going if I can.

I agree.

Sounds lovely, m0therofdragons Smile Whereabouts are the family? (My friends are on the Gulf Coast just below Sarasota, and I can't express how much I yearn to be there!!)

I've not renewed the insurance yet; it covers Covid, but I buy an annual policy and there doesn't seem much point in paying for half a year's worth of insurance if I can't use it to travel

likeamillpond · 20/03/2021 13:19

It was madness to book to go abroad this year anyway.

JensonsAcolyte · 20/03/2021 13:19

Ours is the 3rd July. Moved from the 4th July last year, booked the year before that.

Balance is due 14th April but at this point I just really want all my money back. I can’t cancel yet without losing £800 deposit. I’m really hoping they announce soon that we can’t go.

Delatron · 20/03/2021 13:27

It is only March so anybody who says they know what will be happening in Jul/Aug this year is basically lying. Things change so quickly as we have seen.

We don’t have anywhere booked yet but I don’t think it’s completely ruled out.

Last year we had only just gone in to lockdown here. The peak wasn’t until April I think? Yet even without a vaccine travel corridors opened up in July and we managed to get away. It changed very quickly and cases dropped all over Europe in the summer (without any vaccinations).

We don’t know if that will happen this year and the government seem more worried about variants so that could have an impact. It’s a huge worry for the tourism industry.

I think for those that want to get away it may be a last minute decision.

The third wave in Europe should have passed by then and more will be vaccinated. Did seasonality play a part in the low cases last summer? I guess we’ll see this summer.

whiteroseredrose · 20/03/2021 13:28

I think Spain is desperate to open up so if they make vaccine passports trips to there may be possible.

We were hoping to go to Sicily in September but will only book at the last minute when we can see how the land lies.

EasterIssland · 20/03/2021 13:28
@Easterisland Eh?
That many people will be booking Cornwall this year , it’s one of the most popular tourist places in the uk so it’ll be easier to catch the virus there than in the Italian alps for example

m0therofdragons · 20/03/2021 13:28

@Puzzledandpissedoff just north of Venice. We’re staying in Orlando at a universal hotel but plan to visit Tampa for baseball and meet relatives there.

Initially relatives went too their Mexico house as Florida was a covid disaster but it’s much better now and they don’t want the Russian vaccine Mexico is giving so have gone back to Florida to get Moderna Grin
