Summer holidays abroad?

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

Look at the posts from last year lol. Exactly the same:

‘No holidays this year. I can’t see it. Who would want to go’...bla bla bla.

And yet loads of people jetted off to Spain, Greece, Turkey, Dubai, the Caribbean, Mexico and even the US via 2 weeks in a place like Turkey.

I have no doubt at all that anyone who thinks that there will be no holidays this year, is living in cloud cuckoo land and will be proven wrong this summer, as they were last summer. Smile

You don’t think the U.K. position has changed at all?

Cases weren’t the issue it’s variants that undermine vaccine programme that are.

Or do you think this is not a problem?

The borders should be closed.

Allowing mass travel across Europe last summer was a disaster.

This document from Welsh Government makes non essential international travel sound very unlikely - see pages 11 and 12

It is quite frankly written. Not read a doc like that so far.

The UK has introduced a “red-list” of countries, where there are particular risks from variants of concern. Everyone arriving from a red-list country must quarantine at a managed facility near the UK port of entry. For arrivals from other countries, quarantine is at home. These measures go some way to protect against the importation of COVID-19 and the introduction of new variants into the UK.
We believe these measures should be strengthened. We are ready and willing to support the UK Government in applying managed quarantine to all UK arrivals and gradually opening up travel where we are confident risks are managed. While difficult, this would be the right thing to do to guard against new variants and protect the gains from the vaccination rollout.
Most people visiting or returning home to Wales will do so from English airports (such as those in London, Manchester, Birmingham or Bristol) as well as ferry and rail ports. Unilateral restrictive managed quarantine measures in Wales would therefore have very limited impact as they would currently only apply to a very small number of passengers coming via Cardiff Airport, or other Welsh entry points.
We recognise the interconnectedness we have with England and we will
have in place the same restriction on non-essential international travel until
at least 17 May. Continued restrictions on international travel beyond this
may be warranted if we see case rates begin to increase, either in the UK or across the globe. We will work with the UK Government and with Scotland and Northern Ireland on how international travel can be reopened in the safest way possible.
But we do not want to see history repeat itself. Our successful efforts to supress the virus last summer were undone in part by importing the virus from our summer holidays overseas. We do not want to see the same happen with a new variant.

Ah lost the paragraphs on pasting from doc

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/03/2021 16:21

@MarshaBradyo I know. I was pretty shocked when I read it. It’s made me feel pretty blue but I do quite like and admire the honesty.

Babymamamama · 20/03/2021 16:21

Nope I don’t expect foreign travel this year. I’m vaccinated (due to job rather than age) but DC isn’t so that would mean private testing I would imagine. I’ve parked all ideas of getting on a plane. Just focusing on finishing my mortgage with the money I’m saving by not really doing anything except work, home life and endless walks round the park.

I can’t read your link as I’m not a subscriber

I think travel to a few destinations will go ahead. If no flights go ahead at all this year I wouldn’t be surprised if TUI has to shut some of its stores!

We've just shifted our canaries holiday end July to July 2022. Free amend.

My friend is a Travel Agent and is taking lots of bookings for the summer, however she has advised me to book for September at the earliest.

Itsalonghaul · 20/03/2021 16:56

fooney I hope you see your family soon. Things will hopefully improve with some sunshine and vitamin D. Flowers

I bet she’s not being that honest with clients!
Smileyoriley · 20/03/2021 17:03

No. I was hoping to visit family but am not hopeful and won’t bother booking

May17th · 20/03/2021 17:04

@Lentillover1900 they would go bust and it’s not a travel agents place to start saying to customers don’t book your holidays until after 10th September. Can you imagine how customers would be put off. I feel for them as it would mean and is their job at stake.

Oh no judgment!

I’ve booked abroad for this year and I would still have done so despite what any TA said. Full covid cover so nothing to lose

May17th · 20/03/2021 17:07

Ahhh ok. Me 2. I thought there was a travel announcement on 12th April too... but I noticed someone else saying it’s 17th May I hope it’s not that far away. TUI have been updating what they can on their website so 🤞

I have even booked Butlins as a back up.

Katie517 · 20/03/2021 17:16

They are announcing the plan for travel on April 12th to take effect no earlier than 17th May. International travel will be allowed in the summer but with restrictions on where depending on other countries success with vaccines.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/03/2021 17:29

Just rolled ours over again. Was meant to be 2020, then 2021, now 2022😖

Holidaymakers from Greece were responsible for 20% of cases last summer/ autumn.

I’d be amazed if we’re allowed to leave the U.K.

Totallyfedup1979 · 20/03/2021 17:31

@MarshaBradyo

Why would we be worried about ‘possible’ variants that don’t exist at the moment?
Perhaps we should lockdown permanently to avoid possible other diseases that also don’t exist?

So no, I don’t think our position has changed. I think to prevent freedom due to ‘potential’ issues is ridiculous.

Oh they exist, they just haven't been found- yet.

What a naive statement. Isn’t there a saying ‘prevention is better than cure?’

IcedPurple · 20/03/2021 17:41

That's a very specific claim. Have you got a source for it?
