Looks like Europe may have got their way

He says there has been a delay caused by the need to retest 1.7m doses.
So thats one weeks worth of vaccine delayed. And what happens if that batch is faulty? The assumption here is its going to be fine. Thats not necessarily going to be the case.

The Telegraph says the Indian government is temporarily holding up exports because of a concern about rising cases in the country.
'Temporarily'. Define temporarily. We have been told 5million doses have a 4 week delay. If its being held up for political reasons, there is no guarentees about whether it will be 4 weeks or longer still.

We are being told a 4 week delay but there is no guarentees that it will be resolved after this. It could well yet be a 12 week delay whilst we clear second doses first.
@EasterIssland, and did you hear him say that Gibraltar has become the first place to vacinate all of its adult population. Grin
Was that today? Brilliant! Smile

*We are being told a 4 week delay but there is no guarentees that it will be resolved after this. It could well yet be a 12 week delay whilst we clear second doses firs

And it could be a 3 week delay, with just some reduction of first jabs, all 2nd jabs going ahead within the timescale.

We won't know for a while and moaning and catastrophising about it won't change anything other than your genetal mindset!

MuddlingMackem · 18/03/2021 14:12

@CuriousaboutSamphire, Re: Gibraltar - yes, Matt Hancock included it in his opening statement in the commons today. I saw it on the news.

Thanks. I was walking the dog, missed it, though I had intended to catch it to see what was going on!

SophieGiroux · 18/03/2021 14:21

Ridiculous that they are still thinking of doing the vaccine passports when young people can't get the vaccine anyway and the risk to them is very low. Older ones will be vaccinated and they are the ones at risk. Why should young people miss out on things because they need to have a (pretty much compulsory) jab when they don't really need it?!

Carlislemumof4 · 18/03/2021 14:29

I'm early 40s, DH mid 40s, really disappointed at yesterday's news of the delay. Was hoping to get booked in at local pharmacy in next month. We have three kids back in primary school, DH will need to return to travelling to the other end of the county via rail for work by the summer to work in a busy town centre office. At least May for first jab means August or beyond for second. Everything about to open up, cases rising in Europe, many poised to travel as soon as allowed...feels risky.

Doesn't apply to us but I do think this delay calls in to question the decision to stick with age priorities. That seemed ok with the rollout progressing at such speed but now surely teachers, police, supermarket staff etc. should be moved up the list.

Yeah the 'mindset'.

Fuck off.

Graciebobcat · 18/03/2021 14:58

Brilliant that the vaccinations stop just at the people who will be paying for this lot for the rest of our working lives and who don't even need to use the NHS very often and won't even trouble the public purse so much for pensions as there are fewer of us. Don't worry about the people who have to actually go to work.

purplebagladylovesgin · 18/03/2021 15:16

The government up until recently, had been hesitant in announcing vaccines coming into the country. This was wise.

I think it's been this change that's caused upset for a lot of people. They got ahead of themselves when 5 million arrived last week and announced the total 10 million due (the other half of this has been delayed).

It's the disappointment that's at play here, rather than the numbers being vaccinated. Had nothing been announced then we would be non the wiser, and fully accepting of 2 million a week being vaccinated. Now suddenly we want that total 10million, whilst forgetting we have the delivered 5 million and more to come very much within time lines.

I believe AZ have said their commitment to the UK for 2 million a week remains unchanged. So even without Pfizer, assuming this is blocked, we now have 8 million plus the 5 from India to cover the next 4-6 weeks. We also have Moderna coming in April.

It's a short delay to a speeded up program, vaccines will still happen soon enough. We are in one of the strongest positions globally, please don't lose sight of this.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 15:23

That's nice @RedToothBrush Smile

What mndset?

If you think I blindly believe everything I read or hear, you'd be wrong

I just don't choose to see lies, boogeymen at every corner.

And no, I won't report your post. You can tell me to fuck off all day! It won't make your incredibly cycnical, negative view any more well informed or correct than anyone elses!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 15:25

Had nothing been announced then we would be non the wiser, and fully accepting of 2 million a week being vaccinated. Some of that is down to the journalists who report parts of it. La Kuenssberg was quite a delight when she was first to get sight of the letter yesterday! Her spin on it seemed to set the tone and, having seen others of those letters, it was not different. Dry, formal, factual but no detail of the reasons.

I do t think closing the borders means freight and medications though.......

Just charter and scheduled passenger flights.

RedToothBrush · 18/03/2021 15:31

Charles C. Mann @CharlesCMann
"Why are we sitting on tens of millions of [soon-to-expire] doses of AstraZeneca vaccine gathering dust in our warehouses when they could immediately be distributed ... to the 130 countries that haven't yet given one dose of any Covid vaccines?"

www.nytimes.com/2021/03/17/opinion/coronavirus-vaccine.html
Let Our Doses Go!
The United States has more vaccine lined up than it needs. It should be distributing them to countries that have few to none.

The US haven't, and don't appear likely to, approve AZ. Not only that, but they don't need these vaccines. Yet they sit on them unused. In warehouses.

Will be interesting to see if they allow they to expire....

...but the 'evil EU' and 'evil AZ' bollocks carries on.

Fucked off. And I am very very very depressed by it.

Twats saying 'mindset' can fuck off.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/03/2021 15:32

Lots of us paid for the war for lots of our working lives. The debt was only paid off in 2006......

3asAbird · 18/03/2021 15:33

@Wakeupin2022

I would hope the EU were directing their point in the correct direction...

Normally I would agree, but messaging coming out of EU, commission has been absolutely awful.

You may be right about J&J though, as they wouldn't get away with it the same as US company.

But whatever possessed them to sign up for a deal where the finishing is done in USA? Complete madness.

The EU contract writer needs sacking and give their head a wobble. Not sure if they even signed contract when trump was in power. Logically why would they think producing vaccines in Europe shipping across Atlantic for packaging and back again was wise choice of time/ money and risk?

Do we assume uk is equally as stuffed with janson vaccines then that we assumed be authorised by EMA and delivered within quarter 2
Only as recently as last week moderna supply was imminent next 2 weeks.
I would like uk and az to explain
Whys vaccine uk supply chain coming from the Netherlands.

Now there's retesting added to mix which may give some worries.

Press conference normally not on a Thursday with Boris whitty and head of MHRA.

I just have a bad feeling about so many things.
Doesn't appear like we have any regular safe supply of any if them going forward.
We not producing enough az in uk.
Eu could block pfizer orders.
Moderna delayed and could also be delayed.
Johnson and Johnson already talking about delays and won't deliver to eu at least by end if quarter 2.

Alll this make me and husband in 40s age group think our does won't be April and they won't be may.
I fear school and Easter which whitty and Boris said in December was the new Easter will push rates up.

I do feel angry but there is the expression it is what it is.
I am unhappy with schools safety.
Unhappy each nation doing its own thing and trying score political points.

When it comes to America they do what they want and Biden has ambitious strategies i doubt he rengage on banning exports as wins some points with America 1st trump fans.

I think its the uncertainty makes people feel easy.
I do wonder if my kids bubbles will burst or if cases start to rise again .

VaVaGloom · 18/03/2021 15:38

I agree it’s disappointment people are feeling as they haven’t managed people’s expectations. 12weeks on from the rollout started there was always going to be a stall to first vaccinations as they need to get 2nd ones done. This ‘slowdown’ should really have been communicated as a necessary part of the process. I think they’ve done so well and enjoyed the praise they didn’t want to say we can’t keep up this pace in new vaccinations.

I thought it more to do with an unexpected re test of 1.7m?
VaVaGloom · 18/03/2021 15:44

It’s probably a combination of both supply and 2nd vaccinations- realistically were they ever going to manage all the 2nd doses and keep up the momentum in new age target groups simultaneously?!

notimagain · 18/03/2021 15:44

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I do t think closing the borders means freight and medications though.......

Just charter and scheduled passenger flights.

Lots of freight comes in on passenger flights, I've been aware of 10 plus tonnes plus of pharma being flown into the UK in the holds of a passenger flight from India (out of one of their very much high tech cities) even before the Covid outbreak.

Even now there are mixed passenger (not a lot, mainly workers, in the cabin)/freight (in the holds) flights..and fewer passengers means the aircraft can carry more tonnage of essential freight such as pharma into the UK from various countries.

But this wasn’t always the plan. This has been an unexpected (or more significant than expected) delay to anticipated supplies, which has meant knock-on consequences to how fast they are able to move on to the under-50s.

None of this means the government has done anything wrong, or it’s the EU’s fault, or the manufacturers have messed up, or anything like that. And it doesn’t mean people aren’t grateful for the vaccine rollout or don’t realise how well it’s going.

It’s still a setback though and people are going to be disappointed in that. I don’t see what’s gained by telling people it’s not actually a setback when it obviously is, or that they shouldn’t be disappointed about it.

The vaccine hype's been mental.

A member of my family said yesterday that "the country will be vaccinated by the end of the month"

They haven't had one yet. Their partner hasn't had one yet, their children haven't had one yet and their parents and grandparents have only had their first.

But for some reason they think it's almost finished.

Despite their actual reality that they live in.

It bewilders me.

We're coming up on a quarter of the way through as far as I can see.

So unless things speed up dramatically we'll finish second doses in the autumn

And then maybe start the third dose boosters?

He practises that bullshit in front of the mirror I reckon.

The man's a demented fantasist and notorious history reviser.
