Vaccine supply about to significantly reduce

Looks like Europe may have got their way

OP posts:
BungleandGeorge · 17/03/2021 23:33

We only have the AZ vaccine to export which some EU countries won’t use on the vulnerable (so definitely shouldn’t be prioritised) and many have stopped using altogether so I’m not sure where the squabbling is coming from. They have a stockpile why would they want more?

HSHorror · 17/03/2021 23:43

But even when it does open up to us we could still be waiting much longer than the day it's opened just like your mum.

There is a chart on telegraph which shows the 1st dose vaxs basically dont move while second doses are done. That was on there yesterday.

I believe if this had been said weeks ago they would have struggled to open schools.

sansou · 17/03/2021 23:44

49 and admittedly disappointed. It's obviously the supply issue from India since the Serum Institute had been ordered by the Indian Government to prioritise India's requirements here

greenlynx · 18/03/2021 00:00

@sansou
The online booking is open for 49yo who is going to be 50 soon. Try it. At least it was open 2 days ago.

I think you are going to find out is not the AZ vaccine they're going to put the lock on. It's the Pfizer and Moderna which the EU and most countries in the EU want to restrict selling.

USA and the UK have the lock on AZ, the EU is going to do the same with Pfizer and Moderna.

sansou · 18/03/2021 00:16

@greenlynx
Tried it twice - not eligible. 50 in the autumn so not close enough. Never mind. Will have to wait. Did go online to change my preferred method of communication from the Dr's from letter to text though.

BungleandGeorge · 18/03/2021 00:24

I know it’s those that the EU will attempt to ban exports but the reason being given is that they are not receiving imports of AZ from the UK- but they don’t need or want any currently anyway. It’s all a bit ridiculous anyway as the pharma companies are private businesses, they send vaccine where they are contracted to. If they get governments intervening they’ll probably just move their production sites when they can

Staffy1 · 18/03/2021 00:29
@HSHorror but they are still on target it was over 50's by mid april
I read all adults by mid April several times.

RoseWineTime · 18/03/2021 00:44

I wonder if this is partly political? If we are seen to have a restricted supply and be prioritising second doses for the most vulnerable then it will be more difficult for the EU to block exports to the U.K.?

Alondra · 18/03/2021 00:45

It's not ridiculous. Those pharma companies have accepted billions of dollars worldwide from tax payers money. Specially Pfizer which received millions from German tax payers. Not UK, not USA taxpayers.

It's understandable the EU and Germany are getting pissed off.

SummerBody1 · 18/03/2021 00:45

There have been entire threads on here about what a mess the EU is making of the vxn rollout. In Ireland 95% of vxn delivered are in arms within 7 days. Our issue was always delivery.

Az applied for EU authorisation in January and received it within days. It applied for and received UK authorisation in December. This is not a delay on the part of the EU.

It's manufacturing plant in the Netherlands (Halix) has supplied zero vaccines to the EU - it has actually not submitted the paperwork to authorise supply. But where is this product going?

All this talk of OUR jabs. The EU was the largest funder of the Jenner Institute, the original creator of this vaccine.

The EU and UK supply contracts were actually signed ONE day apart (EU one actually first), with similar language, like 'best efforts'.

The EUs problem is not with the UK, it is with AZ, which seems to be a bad actor.

changi · 18/03/2021 00:49

I understood that the vaccination rollout was always planned to be two stages

Vaccine supply about to significantly reduce
nordica · 18/03/2021 00:53

The Omni calculator has been giving me a date around late April- early May when I select "UK government's plan" as the speed. Still does now but that's clearly now not going to happen if no new appts will even be booked in April. (I'm late 30s so just below the top group in phase 2) I know it's just an estimate but clearly something has changed from the original plan.

Yes this was published at the outset months ago but in recent weeks they have said again and again and again all over 40s would be vaccinated in April. Now they won’t start until
At least may. The deadline for all adults may even still be the same as this but that doesn’t change the fact they’ve been over promising to the over 40s for weeks. It doesn’t give me total confidence they’ll hit that July deadline.

This is an interesting theory.

I think AZ is waiting for it’s Indian plant to be allowed to mass-produce. Once that gets going and other cheaper vaccines (India is trialling one) come out then they may be able to bow out from the Netherlands plant all together.

I think they are blaming or insinuating the UK is at fault but the actual target is probably India, but the EU could face real repurcussions if they targetted AZ India directly. India has also blocked exports / foreign production until their vaccine roll out is complete which is absolutely the right thing to do - but they’re sitting on a huge plant. But from what I’ve read Indian production plans seem on track.

It's nothing to do with the EU (despite their own vaccine meltdown). There was always going to be a supply slow down at this point, but the government hoped they could ramp it up. They weren't able to and so we are back to the original slower timetable for vaccinations.

I read this today from one of the independent sage scientists... you can bet it will be spun though...

knitnerd90 · 18/03/2021 01:58

@Alondra - AstraZeneca isn't approved in the USA. They haven't submitted their data to the FDA yet. There's a bit of to-do here because there's AZ vaccine waiting in the USA that no one can use and Biden is currently refusing to allow it to be exported.

Pfizer and Moderna are producing vaccine in the US so the EU won't have a lock on it. There's also the J&J single shot vaccine being rolled out now.

Furries · 18/03/2021 02:41

@BubbleBanana

My point is, it's absolutely fine for other countries to have issues, it's all their own fault, but not U.K. U.K. issue is they used all the vaccines trying to jab as many people as possible and made promises, not taking the 2nd dose into consideration. And now people are upset, understandably.

People were happily calling the EU fuckwits on MN yesterday. At least the EU did not scrap second doses which are vital in generating the full immune response. Getting the first dose guarantees the second and people get their follow-up appointment on the same day as their first shot. I would be mighty pissed to be walking around with 50% of a vaccine inside me just so that government can puff up their statistics in a global ranking.

FGS, get things right before you post!

The UK haven’t scrapped the second dose. And you’re not “walking around” with 50% of the vaccine inside of you!

ivykaty44 · 18/03/2021 05:07

U.K. has ordered 17m of the modern a vaccination due in the spring, along with orders for another 3 different vaccination. It seems the U.K. government got in early and ordered from several different suppliers

@WhereDoWeGo I think once you have been offered a job you would become eligible for the vaccine so could then book.
