I really hate to say this but not all vulnerable have been vaccinated,
there are many many elderly & disabled still waiting, both of my parents are in their 80's and have not been vaccinated yet

Incogweeto · 17/03/2021 19:07

Schools won't close again if the NHS isn't overwhelmed. Doesn't matter how many people catch it, what matters are the hospital numbers.

Keep telling yourself that.

The elderly and vulnerable were most at risk of dying but not most at risk of taking up hospital beds.

And schools open and transmission increasing leads to mutations and vaccine escape. Probably in time for autumn.

Belladonna12 · 17/03/2021 19:08

@EerieSilence

While the potential risks of vaccinations shouldn't be used as a deterrent, the truth is that Covid vaccinations can have some pretty unpleasant after-effects. I have two elderly friends who after the first jab both independently reported fever, chills, severe nausea, vomiting and generally feeling very sick for two days. And I'm one who will take the vaccination without hesitation, in fact I can't wait for it to become available. They both received Astra and would have preferred Pfizer.
I know a lot of people who have the vaccine and nobody has been that ill. For the vast majority of people, is just an aching arm and a bit of tiredness a few hours.
Oohshortbreadfinger · 17/03/2021 19:08

@TheMoth

So, how many of us under 50s have worked throughout, home schooled, shopped for elderly large and done everything we were told, only to be told: nah, bollocks to you? I've had cv, BTW, but I think immunity only lasts a few months. And I'd quite like to go on holiday this year.
This is how I feel exactly.
LimitIsUp · 17/03/2021 19:09

@Notonthestairs

My local vaccination centre had a "pre planned reduction in supply" about a month ago. When the supply came through they extended hours/days and caught up.

There was always going to be a bump whilst they adjust for 2nd doses happening alongside 1st doses.

DH has just turned 50 and I'm pretty desperate for him to get the vaccine ASAP.

You know he can book now through the national booking site?

Scientists have said the virus can't mutate much more. But carry on with the doom mongering.

I find it very interesting that only just a few weeks ago, MN posters were telling concerned school staff not to worry about going back to school on 8th March because they would be vaccinated in the next few weeks (or at least by Easter) and now posters are now saying ‘don’t worry, you’ll get it by July I’m sure, stop whinging’. Just in time for the school year to be over.

On the last day of term in December just gone, I had an extended ‘festive’ form time with my form for over 2 hours. Turns out 19 of them had Covid that day (but didn’t know it yet)
I’d like to see how many of you downplaying concerns of the delay in vaccinating under 50s would also be happy to sit in a room (unmasked at the time) with windows not opening and 19 Covid infected young people (not young children) in there with you.

Anyone?

I should have been a lollipop person instead of a teacher, then at least I would get to work outside and also be fully vaccinated at the same time by now. Hmm

kittensarecute · 17/03/2021 19:12

@SakuraEdenSwan1

Watch Boris use this to extend lockdown, furlough already extended until September. So predictable.
If you are right then I genuinely fear for my mental health.
ihearttc · 17/03/2021 19:12

I’m concerned what this means for my parents. They are 82 and 84. They had their first dose middle of January so they are due middle of April but no second appointment was booked at the time (they weren’t even offered an appointment and were just told they’d be contacted.). I can’t book for them online and their GP surgery won’t accept any phone calls relating to Vaccines. I also can’t contact via email as they won’t speak to me as I’m not the patient. So how on earth are they going to actually get their second dose (it’s Pfizer btw) when it falls right in the middle of the month of shortages.

Chill08 · 17/03/2021 19:13

I'm feeling very selfish, jealous and to be honest to hear that there is going to be a delay tonight totally gutted too. (I'm late 40's). I know it shouldnt be too long to wait but i'd stupidly had my hopes up for mid April time. Kids all in primary school mixing again, i've worked all the way through and was just starting to the see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've held it together the last year but could cry now.

cuparfull · 17/03/2021 19:13

This is ridiculous... There have been rumblings for days that Ursula VL is demanding the UK send AZ vaccine from production in England to the EU to make up for the stocks they're not getting from AZ Europe.

Given 16 EU countries aren't even using the AZ vaccine atm and they presently have 1.4 million doses in stock.... she trying to drag us down to her level of incompetence.
The EU want us to send AZ vaccine to Europe that they aren t going to use???? Absolute lounacy!!
The UK wants it but cant have it because the EU wants to store it....

Heffapotamus · 17/03/2021 19:13

And here in Scotland we're still on group 6. I'm in 55-60s and was meant to have a vaccine by mid April. Can't see that happening now. Absolutely gutted ☹️

WombatChocolate · 17/03/2021 19:13

I think it is very galling for all those in occupations which have lots of public contact too. Teachers and supermarket workers and Police were told no early vaccine for them, because going by age was fastest method and the age rollout would mean it would get to them fast anyway.

But now it’s delayed by 6-7 weeks for all those Police and Teachers and supermarket workers in 40s. I don’t actually think they should get it sooner, but the way it was presented was that the rollout was goi g to be so speedy that those just missing group 9 would be pretty much immediately after them anyway so it wouldn’t matter. But they won’t be immediately after and not for 6-7 weeks. Teachers will be off school for 2 weeks ov that but in the classroom for 4-5 weeks. Police and supermarket workers will be in work for 6-7 weeks when they had hoped their vaccine would at least be booked for next couple of weeks time...and now it won’t be.

Clearly if there isn’t supply, there isn’t supply.

But they should have known this. And I think there is a cock up somewrhere because they would never choose to put the brakes on the booking system on the day when they announce 25m jabs and all over 50s invited (so essentially all of grouos 1-9 invited) which is a great achievement. They lost the celebration over those things by having to stall the programme at the same time and not being able to say why that’s happened and trying to pretend 40s were never intended to be covered immediately. And notice there was no mention of when they would start getting it or the delay is 6-7 weeks. They will be picked up in that fact, but someone seems to have cocked up. Yes, supply variations happen. But no, you do t expect to delay rollout by 6-7 weeks. And again, it’s not because of needing to do 2nd dosers or mop up ..they were always in the calculation ALONG with the next age cohorts.

Best we can hope is supply re-establishes faster than expected and they can start booking 40s sometimes in April and not wait until May.

Feel the same. Utter shit and more weeks of feeling anxious in school being jostled by adolescents in thin corridors.

Have you tried booking ? Only asking as I had mine via the gp and I’ve managed to book my second appointment via the online system.
Wakeupin2022 · 17/03/2021 19:14

I think this is more about 2nd doses and less supply than hoped.

Some areas are also so far ahead that they are already vaccinating over 40s. I know where I am is over 50's and I was expecting a call pretty soon. Why should I, who's not in a priority group get it before someone who is, if supplies are a bit iffy.

BUT we need to make sure peopke can get there 2nd doses. That's going to have to happen from April. And we have millions of 2nd dose Pfizer to still give.

It may not actually be as bad as they are saying but they may be trying to manage expectations as we were perhaps all getting carried away, including the vaccinators.

It also gives a message to the EU that we don't really have an abundance of vaccines.........

I'd be fine with it. I work in a factory and we've had more than 19 cases.

It will! That the point. Me, 40 something in Englandshire won't get it now, so that dose can go to you if I use you & I as an example.
EerieSilence · 17/03/2021 19:16

@Belladonna12 yes, that's why I wrote what I wrote. You will always get people who get some pretty negative side effects. They're used to scare people though, unfortunately, especially as those vaccines are relatively new.

BungleandGeorge · 17/03/2021 19:16

@poppycat10

I don't understand why so many non CV under 50's seemed to think they would be getting it in the next few weeks, the plan has been published for ages now

Because lots of under 50s have had it (and without underlying health issues). I thought I'd be booking an appointment next week for two or so weeks later.

The only under 50s I know who have had it are carers or CV. 50-60s have only just been added to the booking and they are a large group, the groups obviously get larger each time. And crucially the over 50s are in the vulnerable category and the under 50s are not. I don’t think under 50s by next week was ever going to happen
WombatChocolate · 17/03/2021 19:17

Tramps, why is it that your parents in their 80s haven’t yet been jabbed?

And yes, there will be people in every cohort who haven’t been jabbed yet.....but the gov knew that and always factored them into the rolling programme, along with 2nd doses and along with the next age group down.

Hancock tries to make it sound like 40s must wait because of the vulnerable and 2nd dosers, but the plan was to be doing the mop up and 2nd dosers and 40s altogether. It is a suddden crisis of supply which means the 40s are significantly delayed but he isn’t prepared to present it as it is and hope people all decide it is because of 2nd does or mop up....and lots of this thread have bought that line....but that isn’t what has happened. Something has changed significantly.

poshme · 17/03/2021 19:18

@WombatChocolate interesting. I wonder if there's been a dodgy batch (which they don't want to say & worry people) which has had to be ditched - which has caused the problem.

withmycoffee · 17/03/2021 19:18

@CallMeCleo

Sheer manipulation.

There are so many people now starting to think maybe they should not have it after all, so they need to ramp up the fear that you might not get a chance, that it's running out, in short supply, and this makes people want it more.

Don't fall for it.

We don't need a vaccine for a flu that 99.9% of people won't die from, anyway.

People in Brazil would likely disagree Petal

It depends on area because under 50s are booking already in some. Only just but it’s happening.
