This just came up on my phone. I had the AZ vaccine 10 days ago. I'm concerned about the news of blood clotting issues.

OP posts:

All the vaccines in uk az and phizer have been authorised by our medical regulatory authority MHRA and equivalent in Europe is the EMA notb been safe to use after being carefully studied data from all the trials.

All I meant was vaccines for a corona virus is a brand new thing.
Trials can only get us so far ..
The true test is how it reduced infections, hospital numbers and deaths within each country..
I would happily accept az.
Both my parents had az.

RedRiverShore · 14/03/2021 19:59

My neighbour and my old boss at work both had blood clots long before Covid so they can't be that rare an occurrence.

Dementedswan · 14/03/2021 20:08

I was pregnant 2009 and received swine flu jab... that was experimental then I believe? I have to trust the scientists, we cannot stay locked down forever.

Didn't the swine flu jab end up being associated with narcolepsy?
IrishMamaMia · 14/03/2021 20:12

Totally agree @Dementedswan the thing is the countries who have stopped using it will start using it again in a fortnight but people will suffer from further delays to the vaccination programme.
I've had covid (mildly luckily) and that was a scary gamble. Getting the AZ vaccine was not.

DodgeRainClouds · 14/03/2021 20:18

I have had a blood clot and I had the vaccine yesterday.

Just wanted to mention about people saying “don’t be worried unless you smoke, on the pill, or overweight” I am none of those things and I had one. Everyone needs to be aware of the risks of blood clots regardless. I didn’t tick any of the boxes for a clot and so was misdiagnosed at first.

Bluenightowl · 14/03/2021 20:27

Didn't the swine flu jab end up being associated with narcolepsy?

Yes it was. There was a high profile court case involving a child who had it.

UserEleventyNine · 14/03/2021 20:35

Both the Pfizer and the AZ vaccine are based on existing research. All the scientists had to do was adapt the research so that it worked with this particular coronavirus - like tweaking a recipe when you already know the basic ingredients and method, to be simplistic about it. The BBC has a good article on how the Oxford vaccine was created: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55043551

Weirdly, the cases were so few that it hasn't actually been statistically proven by the CDC: www.statnews.com/2018/07/05/flu-vaccine-2009-pandemic-narcolepsy/.
MRex · 14/03/2021 20:47

And yet, cited constantly by the anti-vax movement as a reason not to trust any vaccines ......

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/03/2021 20:54

@TheKeatingFive I am Irish Descent living in England.
Many Irish friends/relatives are dismayed about how far behind Ireland is in comparison with England.
I absolutely hate BJ with a passion but the vaccine programme has been a triumph.
I hope things pick up soon as I have vulnerable family members in Ireland.

I live here and we really aren’t comparing ourselves to the UK at all. Our eyes are firmly fixed onnEurope.

Yep. Government and court cases agreed, yet not sufficient numbers to be proven - even by someone who believes it (read my link).

Risk is a funny thing when numbers get very small.

Everyone I know is.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/03/2021 21:08

@Bluenightowl you might not be but plenty are. The comments are all over a friends Facebook feed when she did the I have had my COVID jab thing. It actually got quite heated.
Many of my relatives living in Ireland are concerned too as they are older with pre existing conditions and haven't had the vaccine yet their cousins in England have.

Dementedswan · 14/03/2021 21:08

I had zero reaction to the swine flu jab. Had it November 2019 I believe, first dc born may 2010. Swine flue was declared a pandemic but after multiple ivf etc I didn't worry about it.

Covid though... yes .. dh had Pfizer. I've had AZ...

Bluenightowl · 14/03/2021 21:12

Well that settles it then. Your friends are family think Ireland should be more like the UK.

However back in the greater public, there is no evidence or public outcry suggesting this.

TheKeatingFive · 14/03/2021 21:15

A quick review of comments on The Journal would refute this strongly.

I had no reaction to the swine flu jab either, but I had awful pneumonia from swine flu; it took months and months to recover.

Reactions happen though, it's horrible but they do. The balance of risk is likelihood of harm from the illness or the vaccine. Nobody ever wanted cowpox, but it was better than smallpox. These vaccines are far milder than that!

3asAbird · 14/03/2021 21:19

Watching sky news always shit.
But whys Norwegian data swaying Ireland more than uk as I assume uk have vaccinated the most with az so bigger sample.
Some areas of uk are vaccinating 50_60 and I assume all healthcare workers who wanted the jab got it plus all care home residents.

I’d rather not take anything on the Nournal or Facebook as fact thanks.

There’s plenty of evidence that many in ireland are comparing our roll out to the UK. You can choose to deny that if you want. No skin off my nose.
