@HolmeH
Indeed is weird. We are middle class white area of the north with middly to high rates but a lot of people I know are HCPs or other kinds of key workers that have carried on working. There might be proportionally a bit more office workers down south but fairly sure Hcps/key workers/multi generational families/BAME people are in generous supply there too.

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/03/2021 20:28

@Firefliess no, it says more staff than students were tested between 1 Jan and 24 Feb (the period for which figures are given.)

If every school is similar to mine, this will be because staff were more quickly registered to test and more likely to give consent.

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/03/2021 20:31

But yr second point about them being used for asymptomatic people is a very good one. To make any comparison on rates we'd need to add symptomatic testing figures for the relevant populations.

notrub · 04/03/2021 20:43

@MRex

Australia haven't used AZ yet, I mentioned Pfizer because of the previous threats to withhold it. I'd happily have a mix and my parents would love it, but the trial of mixing vaccines hasn't officially completed to confirm what happens to efficacy and antibody longevity rates. I don't think that the JCVI would want to get out on the prison of being forced to approve mixed dosing just because of delivery obstructions.

The WHO is only basing their statements off the ECDC report on 4th March. I just don't see why they've suddenly raised a concern: www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/cases-2019-ncov-eueea. Probably @sirfredfredgeorge is right and my view of case numbers is now utterly skewed because of UK testing; I do see some fairly horrendous test positivity rates by clicking through (several countries over 24%).

"I just don't see why they've suddenly raised a concern"

Because raw numbers matter far less than TRENDS.

If numbers are high in a nation, but going down, then all they need to do is carry on doing what they're doing.

If numbers are rising, no matter WHAT the current level is, then it's a problem that needs addressing.

NB The UK is currently one of the leading countries in Europe in terms of where we are - can we keep R

pussycat and ancientgran I think @MRex meant save any Pfizer supplies we have to use for second doses of those who’ve had Pfizer for their first - incase there is a Pfizer shortage. So to make sure everyone who has had Pfizer can have it for their second dose - not that everyone should just have Pfizer for second dose!

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/03/2021 21:00

We'll know in about 4 weeks (school back next week,

NB many secondary schools will not have all students back in until Thursday or Friday, because of how they're doing the testing. This was allowed for in the DfE guidance. Some year groups will be back from Monday however.

So full effects may not be seen for a further week.

PussyCatEatingEasterEggs · 05/03/2021 09:04

Thanks, that makes sense.
ancientgran · 05/03/2021 09:15

I gave GS a lift to school for his first test yesterday, I think he gets the next one on Monday. It seemed well organised, I was sitting in the car but he was gone for 10 minutes, that was walking from the car park, registering, getting the test done, walking back. Walking to and fro was roughly 5 minutes, so 5 minutes in school, they were doing 120 in his year so I thought that was pretty impressive.

PuzzledObserver · 05/03/2021 09:21

An estimated two out of five (41%) over 80s who had received the first dose of a vaccine less than three weeks ago reported they had met someone other than a household member, care worker or member of their support bubble, indoors; this appears to contradict lockdown regulations

However, this is only significant if it is different from what they were doing before they had their jabs. Granted I only skimmed the report, but I can’t see any reference to that. They might have been meeting their family all along.

I was thinking about this...maybe some of them included the person who gave them their jab? i.e. not someone they'd normally come into contact with. Especially if they attended a GP surgery and were welcomed by non-uniformed volunteers.

herecomesthsun · 05/03/2021 09:57

I was amazed that my DC's school area, which was in the top 5 for a long time when cases were around the peak in January, is now reported as having only 15 cases yesterday!

The bar chart lists who they mixed with - mainly children, grandchildren, friends
lurker101 · 05/03/2021 10:32

To be honest, I’m a bit surprised that it’s as low as 14% for that age group. Within this age group, there will be a lot of very elderly people, for whom a year without contact from their family feels even longer, given their outlook on expected years left. There will be many in this age group who are answering yes, as they have seen their children, who given age are also likely to have been vaccinated. My late 90s Grandmother’s children have been vaccinated based on age and some grandchildren and great grandchildren, so I can understand how someone in this age group would accept the much lower risk of mixing with a small number of family members as the mental health benefit is much greater than the perceived risk, especially at an age where there is no reasonable expectation of many more decades. I would be more worried if this report was for over 60s. And given the answers to who they have been meeting it seems more likely to be a small group of close family, and is less of an issue while most places are closed due to lockdown, as there is less risk of asymptomatic transmission to the unvaccinated.

Piggywaspushed · 05/03/2021 10:36

But there's a risk to the people they meeting too? And this may include children about to gather.

lurker101 · 05/03/2021 10:46

@Piggywaspushed I agree, I’m not saying it’s right or risk-free, and I think people should wait and follow the rules, I’m just surprised that so few are admitting to not following the rules. I would have expected this cohort to be less likely to follow the household mixing rules. We have seen over the last year that a lot of things people have flexed the rules to suit, so I expect this to be another scenario, as the people most at risk (so less likely to have socialised last year) have now been told they’re least at risk of serious outcomes than they’ve been to date, and many people are inherently a bit selfish.

Has anyone tried to use this map to find a LFT test centre?
maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk/findatestcenter.html

From this link: maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk/

Apart from two centres - in Cornwall and South Devon - it shows no other LFT centres for the whole of the south-west, Southampton etc and the south coast...? Am I reading it wrong/is something glitched? I know there are several local test centres even in my small area.

Parents are being given this link with the advice to self-test regularly.

herecomesthsun · 05/03/2021 11:35

Yes, I believe I looked at this a few days ago and there were lots more centres in the areas you describe. Maybe it's a glitch?

lurker101 · 05/03/2021 11:40

It seems to be a glitch - I’ve looked and it’s showing loads of test centres I.e. in Bournemouth region, but they’re all showing as closed. As are all the centres for the London postcodes I entered (which I know are open). So it seems to be a glitch.

CoronaConfusion · 05/03/2021 13:04

Thanks for looking - glad it's not just me!

herecomesthsun · 05/03/2021 13:10

ONS survey shows 1 in 220 with virus in England, (1 in 230 for all the UK). - this is for data 1or 2 weeks ago

England figures were 1in 145 the previous week and 1 in 115 the week before that.

That's a good fall isn't it? About 35% down in a week.

You've answered a mystery for me so thank you. I drove past the Devon one yesterday taking GS to his school to get his first test, it is sort of hidden behind a row of trees/bushes but you can just make out the big tents they use. There is a normal test centre across the road at the leisure centre so I was a bit mystified about what it was.

I haven't seen any mention of it in the local paper or on the local govt web site.

MN answers all the queries even when you don't ask.

CoronaConfusion · 05/03/2021 13:28

The map has now been updated to show my local ones but there are still huge empty spaces! ancientgran my Council website had the locations and opening hours... I only knew about them from Facebook in the first place!

ancientgran · 05/03/2021 13:55

Maybe I just haven't seen them, I suppose I wasn't really looking but I do usually keep to to date with the council covid pages. I'm still really impressed that you answered the question I didn't even ask.
