It has come to a point /coming to a point soon where we now have to learn to live with covid thanks to fab vaccination programme.
All this talk of schools not being ' safe '
They absolutely are safe for the majority of children/teachers.
Cars are not ' safe ' but a lot of people get them in them every day .

We can not carry on like this forever .
We have to live.
Our children need to go back to school.
We need to have a running economy for our kids future.

Lockdown was to stop the NHS totally collapsing. Not for people to ' stay safe ' and not to stop people getting this infection all together

100%

TwirpingBird · 24/02/2021 15:47

Yes. Completely agree. But some people have been so affected by the 'stay at home' messages and the constant hammering of 'if you go outside for something unnecessary you will kill a granny' that they now live in fear. As a society we have been told to fear an illness regardless of the minimal risk to us personally. There will be those who will pick up where they left off, launch back into life, and there will be those who will be scared to leave their house for a long time, even if the risk to them is statistically very minimal.

Mental health services are about to be hit with a serious amount of people looking for treatment for mild forms of agoraphobia and social anxiety.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/02/2021 15:50

YANBU. Lockdown was never to stop young healthy people getting the virus, it was to stop the NHS being overwhelmed, plain and simple. Vaccinate those most likely to need hospital treatment, the rest of us will have to take our chances until we get our vaccines.

Smartiepants79 · 24/02/2021 15:54

I agree completely.
In 10 years the propaganda from this will be part of school’s history curriculum.
For the majority of people the world has been no less safe over the last 12 months than it was before all this began.
I fume internally every time anyone starts ranting on about schools not being ‘safe’. If they were safe before then they’re safe now! 😡

Beaniecats · 24/02/2021 15:55

Yes definitely

LucilleTheVampireBat · 24/02/2021 15:56

Totally agree.

CheeseJalapenoBread · 24/02/2021 15:57

I do think people sometimes talk like there was no illness prior to March 2020 and we all lived risk-free charmed lives. A lot of people seem to panic, on a personal level, about getting covid in a way that I’ve not seen for any other illness; a level of panic that is utterly disproportionate to the actual risk the virus poses to them as individuals.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 24/02/2021 16:59

Yep 100%

It’s surprising how bad people are at risk assessment. Social media is full of people who drink to excess/smoke/eat crap food saying they aren’t putting “that crap” in their bodies!

To be fair though the government pulled a blinder with their campaign of fear. It’s going to be difficult to unpick.

applesandoranges221 · 24/02/2021 17:25

Absolutely!!

user1487194234 · 24/02/2021 17:35

100% agree

ihatethecold · 24/02/2021 17:36

Unfortunately the governments “Project Fear” worked too well.

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2021 17:38

I agree safe was always a SD mechanism pre vaccine

katieloves · 24/02/2021 17:39

I can’t believe the number of times I’ve read ‘your children won’t be safe at school’. They were never 100% safe but, apart from a a absolutely minuscule number of dc, they have never been at any greater risk during this whole pandemic than they were before it (like the majority of us). It’s absolutely beyond belief.

Mummabeary · 24/02/2021 17:40

Totally agree! I've always been a worrier in life but not been particularly worried about Covid and often wonder if it's because I see the dangers in life on a daily basis. All the talk of "safe" schools sets my teeth on edge. I have never thought of them as totally safe- my kids could trip and bang their head in the playground or fall off the wall bars or any number of things. But I take that risk every day because they need and deserve the joy and education that school brings. It's no different now.

Loopyloututu2 · 24/02/2021 17:44

Yes, we’ve followed the rules, the nhs didn’t get overwhelmed. Now we have a vaccine that seems to be doing what it should. Time to get on with life.

Realitea · 24/02/2021 17:45

It's difficult for a lot of people, we have been bombarded with images of people struggling to breathe, been told to stay at home, constant news stories of healthy people succumbing to this illness. It's going to take a LOT to try and reverse that. Especially those who haven't had the vaccine or are at risk, or have anxiety, etc. It will take time.

CocoPark · 24/02/2021 17:53

Of course you're right. Critical thinking seems to be MIA atm.

PopUpName · 24/02/2021 17:59

Well, cars kill about 1700 people a year, give or take depending on the year. Covid, rather more. So it's not a great comparison.

I guess it depends who you are, what your underlying health is like, how old or obese you are. Anyway, most people who need the vaccine most urgently will have it soon if not already.

PopUpName · 24/02/2021 18:01

And I do think YABU to think that people who worry are idiots who believe life was 100% safe preCovid.

I've not worried much about it. But I am in no way at risk.

HSHorror · 24/02/2021 18:06

Yabu lets just get through offering everyone the vax, that is jul.
That should make it less likely to get into schools. Why do we need so many kids to get long covid

RedGoldAndGreene · 24/02/2021 18:11

I wonder how many kids pick up bugs like D&V each winter via school?

I don't think it's unreasonable to question why schools are built with windows that don't open etc That would have been very useful during that pandemic.

It is also worth questioning the way that we school. Should younger kids get more outdoor learning like a Forest Schools? Is constant testing really in children's best interests?
