Employer disadvantaging and threatening staff who haven’t had the vaccine

My partner works in health and social care. He isn’t an anti vaxxer. Just feels it’s too soon. His employer is furious and is threatening to stop offering shifts if they don’t get it. I’m genuinely concerned about his job security. Can they do this? Helpful replies only please. This isn’t a thread about anti/pro vax.

A question for those people who aren’t taking the Covid vaccine because it’s too new....

Do you think we’ll get out of this pandemic without getting a significant portion of the population vaccinated? Do you recommend that we all refuse it, or are you just hoping that enough gullible guinea pigs will give you the benefit of herd immunity without the risks that you worry about?

So are you saying that the people taking the vaccine gullible guinea pigs?

As previous poster mentioned there is no case law to test whether it is legal or not to make having a vaccination mandatory in a job and it is a grey area, but more and more employment law specialists are now saying it can be made mandatory if there is proven just cause (reducing spread of covid to vulnerable clients in this case)and employees can be dismissed if they refuse to follow a reasonable management instruction. (Words to that effect) Personally we have gone with keeping it voluntary as we hope that our employees will act responsibly for the protection of clients,their colleagues and their families. Seems to be working.

whymewhyme · 24/02/2021 23:48

I am going through the same thing, i am of child bearing age, i will have the vaccine but id prefere to wait till after ive had a baby ( trying atm) my employer rang me today and said its being made manditory for new staff, if existing staff decline they will be offered a none face to face role, which isn't possible in my work place. I am assuming they will make it very difficult for me and i will have to chose...job or vaccine. I feel very pressured and very discriminated against, It is my body and i should have the choice and right now i don't feel like i do.

Shelby2010 · 24/02/2021 23:51

@reformedcharacters

Not at all, I’ve had my first jab. I was trying to point out that those refusing the vaccine (without good reason) are relying on other people to get the world back on track. They think there are risks but they want others to take them while they ‘wait a bit’.

Obviously I said it badly.

honeybee88 · 24/02/2021 23:55

Eyam village 1665 and the black death! Lockdown was the answer! No vaccinnes then. We don t know the long term effets.

Porcupineintherough · 24/02/2021 23:56

So @whymewhyme your plan is to get pregnant then work in a customer facing role come what may next winter? When most employers are following advice that (unvaccinated) pregnant women are not put in that position during the third trimester.

Surely getting it now before you get pregnant is best? Got to be better than getting Covid in pregnancy?
Localocal · 25/02/2021 00:00

Too soon? What?

If you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem. And the solution to the problem of covid is vaccination.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/02/2021 00:03

Redcurrant puff
It's not the pandemic that's "trashing societies & economies", it's the lockdown.

Whatever, but the way out of it is the vaccine. Sitting with your thumb up your arse waiting for some arbitrary date to pass on the calendar whereby it is deemed “not rushed” by the hard of thinking is not really an option.

Duggeehugs82 · 25/02/2021 00:11

@nancy75

The it’s too soon argument pisses me off above all else. We’d all like the comfort of a vaccine that’s been around for years but we don’t, that’s not available. Most of us are willing to have this jab to protect ourselves our families and to get the country back to normal - the it’s too sooners are happy to benefit from the freedom the vax will give us but don’t want to do their bit. If it’s too soon to have the vaccination then it’s too soon for him to leave the house.
Isnt this ultimately what anti vaxxers r thou , they want everyone else to have it just not themselves this angers me
Fiona2020 · 25/02/2021 00:14

Why does everyone assume people want the vaccine? I’m 90% sure my partner won’t have it- he doesn’t even have a GP. He’s got no reason other then he was fine when he had covid and he cba. Not everyone wants it. This isn’t a communist country it’s not going to be implemented!

nancy75 · 25/02/2021 00:24

@Duggeehugs82 exactly, they want everyone else to do their bit but they get the benefit.

digitaldays · 25/02/2021 00:32

Estimates say 75% of the population of Euan village died as a direct result of the plague.

Covid is not the plague and vaccines work. Please stop spreading cruel nonsense

No, it was 260 out of a population of 800.

But the point of what Eyam did was not so much to save themselves from the plague, but to stop it spreading outside the village - in particular to Sheffield. It's generally accepted that they saved the lives of thousands.

But yes, absolutely, vaccines are by far the most sensible answer to Covid.

Thehappygardener · 25/02/2021 01:08

My niece is in a care home for young adults with learning disabilities and autism. No one from her family, except her parents for a few minutes in the garden each week, can see her because of the fear of Covid. Despite this, the home has recently employed a male nurse, aged 55, who refuses the Covid vaccination because of something his neighbour said. People with LD are 6+ times more likely to die from Covid. If you don’t want a vaccination, then please don’t work with vulnerable people. Masks and PPE are not very effective unless worn properly and replaced regularly. He doesn’t wear his properly!

My view is that this male nurse is stupid, ignorant and selfish, and should not be working in care. I agree with RampantIvy who said: I can envisage families of vulnerable people insisting that the care givers are vaccinated.

Cloudyrainsham · 25/02/2021 01:14

Finding care staff is a nightmare at the best of times with a high turnover. If employers start insisting on it they’ll have a huge staffing problem on their hands.

RuledbyASD · 25/02/2021 01:16

@Lockdownennui

What does he actually do? If he could be putting others at risk it doesn’t seem unreasonable of them to prefer staff who won’t. I don’t understand why you say he isn’t anti-vax when he’s refusing to be vaccinated.
How could not having the vaccine be putting anyone at risk?! It doesn't stop you picking up the virus and passing it on! The vaccine just means it doesn't effect you! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤨🤣
