Had my invite, but how can I find out in advance which jab I'll be getting?

I got one of the new shielding letters last week moving me into group six for vaccines, and had my invite today. I've been offered a choice of two centres: one place a short walk away, one absolutely miles and miles away. Plenty of appointments next week, but no information other than an appointment time to select and an address.

I will only accept certain vaccines due to religious reasons, so I would like to find out what vaccine they are distributing at each centre before I book an appointment. The close one is an ex youth centre and I googled their phone number but no one answered - presumably because the office is closed.

I don't want to waste an appointment by booking and then having to find out it's the wrong one when I get there. I suppose I could walk past it and drop in, but that seems like madness covid-wise.

WWYD?

Fgs don’t book an appointment and waste it just because it doesn’t suit your agenda. You obviously aren’t falling over yourself to get vaccinated so leave it for someone who will bloody appreciate it. Honestly I despair.

peak2021 · 22/02/2021 14:20

Do you know anyone who has had the vaccine locally? Might that help?

Hadjab · 22/02/2021 14:20

@lalafafa

The centres don’t know what vaccines they’ll have in advance. Just take what you’re given, why are you being a PITA?
Being a PITA would require the OP to refuse being vaccinated - she isn’t.

Fucks sake 🙄

Snowwaiting · 22/02/2021 14:23

‘and I would like to exercise my right to have that one, and I'm quite happy to accept some cost to myself to do so’

OP you don’t have a right of choice between vaccines and the potential cost is not just to yourself .

EstuaryBird · 22/02/2021 14:25

I’m sorry to come across as maybe harsh OP but vaccination is our best way out of this misery and the faster it’s done the better.

Yes, you’re one person and will only waste maybe one or two appointments.....but if everyone does that then it’ll take years to get it done. If we were all demanding our preferred vaccine and just making appointments until we got it, it would be mayhem.

I think you’ve every right to hold out for your preferred product but if it was me I’d wait until most people had theirs and not book until the end of the vaccination cycle.

extentioncord · 22/02/2021 14:25

I really struggle with people who let religion dictate or potentially dictate their physical wellbeing. What is the point?

ChronicallyCurious · 22/02/2021 14:27

I was told to ring up and book into an AZ clinic because I have a huge history of anaphylaxis and have a medical condition which causes me to have extreme allergic reactions all the time and therefore this was the only vaccine suitable for me. So I think they do know in advance?

knittingaddict · 22/02/2021 14:27

The op has said that she's going to book her appointment and if it's the "wrong" vaccine she's going to refuse it and go home. That's totally irresponsible.

WannaCapybara · 22/02/2021 14:27

@PerspicaciousGreen did you say you've been moved up a group due to prior gestational diabetes?

Apologies if I've picked that up wrong.

Good luck with getting the vaccine you feel is right for you. Smile

Ch3rish · 22/02/2021 14:27

No it wouldn't, if she wasn't getting vaccinated she wouldn't need to possibly waste an appointment or divert staff on telephone calls before the event or make multiple appointments before finding a suitable one

Not making an appointment doesn't inconvenience anyone, that's the very opposite of being a PITA isn't it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2021 14:28

So does your reasoning mean catholics often won’t have vaccines due to possible foetus testing

Whether mmr meningitis flu and no COVID

I honestly had no idea catholics felt this way due to their beliefs

But surely it’s better to have and be safe /live /not die - as the pope said

Some people have medical reasons to have one not the other! My OH is in that position, his oncologist has been very specific as to which he can/can't have.

No, not if there are genuine reasons.
Belladonna12 · 22/02/2021 14:32

If you haven't been given a choice then there probably isn't a choice where you live. A lot of vaccination centres don't know what they are getting until the day .If you aren't actually at high risk, I would wait a while as things may change in the future. Whatever you do, don't make an appointment and then refuse to have it.

I agree. Timewasting at vax centres because you imagine your personal deity cares what vaccine you have is shocking behaviour.

hatedbytheDailyMail · 22/02/2021 14:35

They don't, in the vast majority!

ChloeCrocodile · 22/02/2021 14:35

Some people have medical reasons to have one not the other!

Also, as we don't live in a police state people can just make random decisions about which vaccine to have (or none) if they wish. The right to decide which medical treatment to accept or reject is pretty bloody fundamental and the OP (or anyone else for that matter) and do so on whatever grounds they wish. Trying to bully, coerce or insult someone into a particular medical treatment is absolutely abhorrent behaviour. And rightly illegal if done by doctors so I'm not sure why other posters think it is okay!

Chloemol · 22/02/2021 14:35

You get what they have, and they don’t know until the day

So book and see

Belladonna12 · 22/02/2021 14:35

I haven't heard that one vaccine is contraindicated but not the other in oncology. It is the hospital clinic going to vaccinate him to make sure he gets the right one?

GlitterNails · 22/02/2021 14:36

user1497207191 - well that's completely different if he can't have one for medical reasons, and not what is being discussed.

murbblurb · 22/02/2021 14:36

Op, if you refuse a dose it will probably go to waste. That is fucking selfish. Either accept what you are given or dont book.

MrsWindass · 22/02/2021 14:37

Large centres eg at hospitals have the Pfizer as they have the deep freeze facility needed . The small local centres did initially have the Pfizer for older people but now are AZ due to the storage requirements .

letsgoandtango · 22/02/2021 14:37

This thread has made me so angry. Take whatever vaccine you are offered and thank (whoever you think is up in) the heavens that we live in an enlightened age where multiple vaccines can be developed in the space of a year to protect society from a deadly illness.

PuffItsGone · 22/02/2021 14:37

I really don't want this thread to turn into a pile on of people who don't have the same beliefs about the sanctity of life that I do calling me an idiot.

I personally would put the sanctity of those alive and vulnerable first and just get whichever vaccine I was (lucky enough) to be offered (for free nonetheless!)

Jaxhog · 22/02/2021 14:38

@titchy

I wasn't aware of any religious leaders advising one specific vaccine only?
That's what I thought.

While I sympathize with people holding certain religious beliefs, the idea that it might cause someone to reject a life-saving vaccine is appalling. Especially if it might mean someone else going without.

My suggestion is to not waste the NHS 's time and wait until ALL vulnerable people have been jabbed.
