Had my invite, but how can I find out in advance which jab I'll be getting?

I got one of the new shielding letters last week moving me into group six for vaccines, and had my invite today. I've been offered a choice of two centres: one place a short walk away, one absolutely miles and miles away. Plenty of appointments next week, but no information other than an appointment time to select and an address.

I will only accept certain vaccines due to religious reasons, so I would like to find out what vaccine they are distributing at each centre before I book an appointment. The close one is an ex youth centre and I googled their phone number but no one answered - presumably because the office is closed.

I don't want to waste an appointment by booking and then having to find out it's the wrong one when I get there. I suppose I could walk past it and drop in, but that seems like madness covid-wise.

WWYD?

@PerspicaciousGreen I think you should decline the appointment. I don't think God would think very well of you potentially wasting an appointment someone else could use, that would be a very selfish thing to do.

anniegun · 22/02/2021 15:03

Wait until the summer and there is more likleyhood of you being able to choose

Belladonna12 · 22/02/2021 15:03

It sounds like you shouldn't even be in the category 6 OP, so phone the GP surgery and get yourself moved to where you should be on the list (if you are under 50 that will be quite low down). Probably by the time you are truly eligible there will be a choice so dilemma solved. I'm sure, as you are so moral, you wouldn't want to be in front of somebody who actually is at high risk and you certainly wouldn't want to waste the vaccine by making an appointment and then refusing it.

nitsandwormsdodger · 22/02/2021 15:04

There are no religious reasons why you should reject any vaccine all religious leaders have said this

OP having had the vaccine now, I can assure you that cannot 'drop in' to a centre.

Are you mad?

There are marshals at the door/ driveway.

You are asked for your name/ ID at the door and told where to go.

There is no way you will get beyond the entrance unless you are actually going in and taking your coat off the minute you walk in.

Agree. This is dangerous propaganda
Itsokthanks · 22/02/2021 15:05

I would just have which ever you're offered. Religion really shouldn't come into it. Covid is real and can significantly affect yours and other people's lives...

No one can choose.

There are no grounds for choice.

@user1497207191

Well that’s fair enough but we’re talking about a completely different scenario so I’m not sure I understand the relevance?

PerspicaciousGreen · 22/02/2021 15:08

Thanks to those who have let me know that some centres do know in advance and some don't. I've sent an email to the GP group who are organising it. If they don't reply/don't know, I guess it's probably better for me to decline the vaccines altogether for the moment as I agree it would be a shame to waste a dose/appointment that someone else would have wanted.

I think the thread should stand. The clear consensus is that it's a ridiculous idea to allow religious beliefs to influence the vaccine decision and plenty of quotes to show that the Pope is actually in support of the vaccination.

BettysButtons · 22/02/2021 15:09

@UnsolicitedDickPic

What happens to the sanctity of life when you kill someone by passing on COVID to them, because you fucked the vaccine off when it wasn't the flavour you liked? Sanctimonious bullshit. How dare you.
Well indeed...'It's possible that vaccines won't stop or significantly less the chances of infection. But jabs might make infected people less able to pass the virus on, or make them less infectious, and so reduce transmission'.

The point about 'Suicide denial' is very interesting also.

We don’t, the OP is in a minority of one. Hmm

CrunchyCarrot · 22/02/2021 15:09

Can you get vaccinated at your GP's surgery instead, OP? I have a friend who needed to get the AZ vaccine rather than Pfizer (due to allergy concerns) and she was able to decline the Pfizer jab and get a later appointment for the AZ one instead. No wasting of vaccines via that route! :)

SummerHouse · 22/02/2021 15:10

If the OP feels that to accept a certain vaccine is wrong then that's her decision. There is an alternative. Our local centres have a process to try and use up all vaccines so it may well not be a case of it going to waste. The OP is just trying to do what she believes is right. Wouldn't it be better if this thread concentrated on simple solutions or suggestions rather than pages of people saying just take it or leave it?

riotlady · 22/02/2021 15:10
@PerspicaciousGreen
There has been a glitch in the coding system meaning that people who suffered with GD have been incorrectly put into category 6. Please contact your GP surgery and this cord as you are not yet eligible to receive the vaccination.
Yes but you should only disregard if you’ve had your yearly hba1c checks and your blood sugar is within normal range. Otherwise there is a risk of undiagnosed T2. It’s not as simple as saying it’s a glitch and everyone should ignore it

It's interesting that you are not responding to any posts regarding the teachings of the Catholic Church.
greenfrogs1 · 22/02/2021 15:12

The guy in that video the OP shared actually said he hoped the AZ vaccine would fail????

Affectation · 22/02/2021 15:12

We haven't been given the luxury of choice, unsurprisingly.

She can do what she likes. Not in the name of Catholicism though.

THIS.
mangoandraspberries · 22/02/2021 15:16

I would keep trying to call or walk past and ask. Failing that I’d take my chances on the day and turn it down if need be - unfortunate as someone else could have had your appointment, but if you’ve done all you can to find out beforehand then that’s ok in my view.

And FWIW I don’t agree with all the comments you’ve had re. being ungrateful and not understanding your religious reasons. IMO and IME, if you are religious then that is your most important aspect and if that means turning down a vaccine and taking the increased risk then that is absolutely your prerogative.

Waspnest · 22/02/2021 15:16

But people picking and choosing which vaccine they want will slow down the vaccination of everyone and whilst that might be acceptable if it is for health reasons (though I believe this is now considered less of an issue) I don't think it is for any other reason. I can't begin to imagine the extra work that would be created by people trying to select one particular vaccine over another.

Fortyfifty · 22/02/2021 15:17

OP. Since your dilemma is that you do not want to waste anyone's time, I think you world be better waiting until the priority groups have been vaccinated. I suspect there will come a time when rolling the vaccine out to the greater population not at risk, that they will offer them on a turn up and queue to get it basis - rather than an appointment system.

You said yourself you've been put in priority 6 on a technicality. If you don't need it, don't take the appointment and then waste that appointment.
