Hope no-one minds me starting this. Apologies if another has started too. Please can someone add the pretty pictures.

NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

Please note, this is a thread to share good news and for wobblers to be reassured. Doomploppers will be met with scorn and derision!
@2020CanDoOne if you like clotted cream but not scones you need to go to Falmouth, on Swanpool beach there is a little ice cream hut that does the best ice cream cones with a thick layer of clotted cream around it and sweets/fruit/nuts on the clotted cream. It is the best ice cream I have ever had.
Ooh yes, we've been to that ice cream hut and the ice cream is lovely. Only downside is DS takes forever deciding what topping to have. And he always pesters us to play mini golf while we're there. While I'm indulging my memories of Cornish ice cream, another great one I went to a couple of years ago is in Perranporth, in the town/village rather than on the beach. It used to be a dairy and I think they still used their own milk to make the ice cream. I had a chocolate orange cone and it was lush! Really hope these places survive.

Sorry to hear you're still suffering Fuzzy

the worrying paragraph in that Independent article is this:

"Such trends have raised the need to reconsider the country’s approach to dealing with influenza, according to Christina Pagel, a professor of operational research at University College London"

HmmShock

carolinesbaby · 24/02/2021 10:17

fourtea that was what I thought! I don't think we want to have rolling restrictions every winter due to flu, do we?!

1990s not till mid august...

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2021 10:18

God no, and the flu has almost had me twice.

I took this to mean possible masks and social distancing in shops etc... I would be ok with that.
alreadytaken · 24/02/2021 10:59

Influenza kills babies. I detest masks but if wearing them indoors and especially on public transport will save a babies life I'll willingly wear them next winter.

I also suspect this means the efforts to disinfect on the tube will continue, that we'll have flu vaccination extended to lower age groups and that we'll be encouraged to ventilate rooms more. And maybe more of a push at firms to allow work from home in winter.

alreadytaken · 24/02/2021 11:10

@FuzzyPuffling have you considered a covid test? It is possible, though unlikely, you picked it up at the vaccination centre. Extra vitamin D, if you have it, since it is depleted when ill.

Hopefully just your immune system and it will improve again soon but avoiding alcohol might also help.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/02/2021 11:27

Surely hand washing and sanitising is one of the most effective measures with flu and colds? I am happy for that to continue.

I can take those things. I just don't want pressure to close down society every winter.
FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2021 11:32

Flu can kill babies but not very many.

"The burden of influenza in England by age and clinical risk group: A statistical analysis to inform vaccine policy - ScienceDirect" www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0163445313003733

Like all illnesses, the burden of illness falls to the elderly.

You'd save far more babies by improving health care for them and treating treatable diseases earlier.

Than us all tiptoeing around each other in masks.
@FuzzyPuffling are you able to take aspirin or brufen?

Really hope you feel better soon.
Sadly not (CKD to add to my woes).

Thank you for all your good wishes. I'm pottering on.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/02/2021 11:58

My favourite ice cream place is Cone Zone in Polzeath. They do one called "Supermix" and it is fabulous. Utterly fabulous. It has tiny maltesers and toffee sauce and nuts and choc chips.... I am putting that high on my list of "Things I Want To Do After Lockdown".

Emlemily · 24/02/2021 12:50

Ooh, I'm near Polzeath. Might have to take a trip out that way once they are open again to sample some ice cream!

I'm thinking of booking a forest school party for my daughter's class in end April/early May. Anyone know if that will be permissible do you think?

herecomesthsun · 24/02/2021 15:09

29 March
The second part of the first phase of reopening will begin as schools break up for Easter holidays. Outdoor gatherings will be permitted for either up to six people – reinstating the rule of six – or two households. The new rule is designed to give greater flexibility for families to meet outside, where the risk of transmission is significantly lower.

Outdoor sports facilities such as tennis or basketball courts and golf course will reopen. Organised adult and children’s sport, such as grassroots football, can also return.

There might be some possibilities there for some sort of outdoor party? Good luck!

442 deaths reported today, compared with 738 last Wednesday.
Goes without saying this is still tragic and far too high. But 40% drop, fantastic.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2021 16:15

And a sub 10k on a Wednesday, that feels significant.

alreadytaken · 24/02/2021 16:16

@FourTeaFallOut From the paper you quoted " Infants under 6 months had the highest consultation and admission rates, around 70/1000 and 3/1000 respectively. " I want the NHS to have capacity to treat those infants and save their lives so I'm willing to wear a mask. I already wash my hands a lot, but I hope to see more people doing that.

The point i was trying to make was that closing down society for flu is unlikely but the more of us willing to make small change the more capacity the NHS will have to treat other health conditions.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/02/2021 16:16

Cases 9,938 previous Wednesday 12,718
Deaths 442 previous Wednesday 738

Obviously they are right out there we are doomed😂😂😂

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/02/2021 16:20

So nice to have these lovely big drops again!

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2021 16:26

Children do have huge rates of hospitalisations for flu - and colds too. Absolutely. I was responding to your concern the flu kills babies. And while it does, it is very few and I was suggesting there are better ways to protect babies from death.

I am a little perturbed, not by people wearing masks if they chose to, but the rhetoric that we should mitigate every risk, especially when that speaker is Christina Pagel.
