Israel has done it: Freedom Badges for the vaccinated

Green badges, let you go to restaurants, synagogues, swimming pools, shopping malls, etc.

I can't tell if the unvaxxed would be allowed to go to supermarket or send their kids to school.

Many people have said they would expect people with medical exceptions to be given a badge but do we know has this happened in Israel?

Sleeplessinsaltend · 21/02/2021 09:52

I worry that even with exemptions there will still be a two tier system based on health status.
Pinkhappy it really isn’t as rare as you would think, once you are involved and researching it there are lots of people unable to have vaccines. Which is distressing for them as much as anyone.

Nith · 21/02/2021 09:56

Techy types may know - how easy would it be to produce an app that mimics the digital badge?

MoirasRoses · 21/02/2021 10:10

It’s not an actual badge 🤣 it’s an app on your phone ..

user0987654 · 21/02/2021 10:16

@Sleeplessinsaltend

Many people with drug allergies can not have the Pfizer of the AZ vaccine. Will we be excluding them from day to day activities. Also children with sever autoimmune issues (such as my oldest DD) who isn’t allowed any vaccines due to previous reactions. Will she be kicked out of uni? Barred from social life, travel and even shopping. As others have said, it’s a slippery slope.
you would expect medical exceptions in the same way there are for the yellow fever vaccination. To me this is the idea of having any kind of vaccine passport, it allows those who have had the vaccination and those that can't have the vaccination to enter these places.

It's people that can but won't have the vaccine that are blocked, for the very reason that some people can't have it and still need to be protected. It seems that those 'making an informed choice not to have it' are mostly the same people who suggest vulnerable people should just be locked away 'for their own protection' so they can get on with life without restriction.

Personally if you have to refuse anyone access to holidays/concerts/restaurants (the nice to haves in life, but certainly not essential) I would much prefer it to be people that are making a choice

TransplantedScouser · 21/02/2021 10:20

@Fembot123

Still a choice they are actively making though

Fuckadoodledoooo · 21/02/2021 10:26

This is absolutely terrifying.

People who would be all for this need to stop abs think about what a slippery slope we are on.

MartiniDry · 21/02/2021 10:28

@covetingthepreciousthings

If it's an app.. what about all the folk who don't have smart phones to load an app on?
Or those of us who would immediately dispense with our smartphones if Israel's policy was to be introduced over here?
MaxNormal · 21/02/2021 10:28

@Fembot123 I love your attitude, realistic, compassionate and selfless.

Randomschoolworker19 · 21/02/2021 10:31

I've never understood why people are so resistant to things like I'd cards. People will happily have a passport, driving licence, work ID, Gym membership card, travel card or a library card but even suggest they should have an ID card and they start frothing at the mouth and lose their shit.

MarieFromStTropez · 21/02/2021 11:03

Well, if ALL of the people who are NOT allergic, pregnant, breastfeeding, etc. had the vaccine, then that would be enough to defeat it. That way, EVERYBODY could enjoy a normal life.

Unfortunately, people in this country are far too selfish and entitled for that to work, so we’re probably stuck with this virus forever.

Sleeplessinsaltend · 21/02/2021 11:09

Mariefromsttropez we have one of the highest vaccine uptake in the world.

Timbucktime · 21/02/2021 11:13

It’s pretty sick that they think this is ok.
Looks like those that people called conspiracy have been correct all along.

Fgs1 · 21/02/2021 11:18

There hasn't been any suggestion that our Government will do this - quite the opposite. There's no way this would wash with our population. However, going on holiday or getting a job might be a different matter. I can't say I'd have much sympathy for those who choose not to get vaccinated if they can't do nice things like go abroad.

Meredithgrey1 · 21/02/2021 11:20

The genuinely medically exempt would not be excluded

Are you sure? The genuinely exempt from masks get all sorts of abuse, as well as being told to just stay out of indoor public areas until covid has gone. Are the delightfully tolerant public going to be equally pleasant to those who can’t be vaccinated?

Me neither... a free ID card would be amazing in my opinion. So much less hassle than gathering together all manner of random documents when applying for jobs/housing. Although I'd rather just have it all on a fingerprint to be honest. Also for travel - a passport seems so old fashioned in today's digital age.
Malfoof · 21/02/2021 11:22

It's not a badge, it's a certificate that you can have emailed to you, you can print out or show on your phone when required. It does not exclude people who have not been vaccinated. They need to provide a negative covid test (taken within the last 48 hrs) in order to get into gyms, pools, concerts, hotels.

It does not apply to shops, malls, museums, government offices etc.

It cannot be faked as it is linked to our ID cards by Q reader.

It's meant to encourage as many people as possible to get vaccinated. Those who chose not to will have to produce a negative test to be allowed entry to the places I mentioned above.

If they're exempt they probably should be at home keeping safe. Why is it okay for them to be out breathing their germs and putting people at risk, spreading the virus and subsequently extending lockdown and the damage it's causing? Other countries like China, UAE are back to normal or thereabouts and not in lockdown because they're less snowflakey.

Tattoo, nah, you just need a yellow star on your coat. Simples

MartiniDry · 21/02/2021 11:24

Realistically, the UK would be a mess if it followed Israel. Think of the queue at the job centre for a start!

JC: "Go for an interview at M&S"
Person: "No point. I have no badge"
JC: "Ok, Sainsbury's"
Person: "In the same mall as M&S, I'm afraid"
JC: "Local authority office? Reception at the swimming pool? Plumber in Pimlico?"
Person: "Same problem"

Donoteatthekittens · 21/02/2021 11:30

I’m pregnant and then I’ll be breastfeeding so won’t be having the vaccine for now. I’m not “anti vax” and had my flu and whopping cough vaccines when pregnant. Would certain Mumsnetters prefer I stay at home for the next two years? You can pay my mortgage for me too. 👍🏻

Also, we will still be mask wearing and social distancing, despite the vaccine.

Timbucktime · 21/02/2021 11:30

FGS1 is unfortunately clearly one of those vile people in our society with their views.

I think the difference is that there are a lot of people who aren't medically exempt that are vocal about saying they are so they don't have to wear a mask. There is nothing to validate that exemption, and people are abusing it (so you get some people who are assuming that all non mask wearers are faking it)

If they operate this like the yellow fever vaccination, then your doctor has to say you are exempt, you can't decide it for yourself

RJnomore1 · 21/02/2021 11:32

Oh wow of all the countries to do this...
