This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4155962-10-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to discuss our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain or anything else along those lines - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a mind-blowing 16,875,536 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 32% (or 1 in every 3.1) of all UK adults.

Every day, hundreds of thousands more people are gaining excellent levels of protection against this sodding virus. So, let’s keep jab jab jabbing our way onwards, upwards and out of this. Covid, we’re coming for ya!!!

I was looking at some stats from January and I think around 3m first doses of astrazeneca were given in January which form the second doses in April so it still seems odd that there will be a supply issue in April if the UK factories can produce 2m a week unless they always hold enough vaccine supply for both doses at anyone time.

Frazzled2207 · 18/03/2021 09:51

@buttery81
The government never actually said that it was press leaks. The government's official position is that all over 50s will have a first dose by mid april which will still happen, fairly easily at this rate.
April will be mostly 2nd jabs. Remember that a lot of people were vaccinated with their first jab in January so it will be mostly that lot.

@Frazzled6
Astra Zeneca is producing average of 2m per week for the UK but it is an average not a consistent 2m. I understand that we were expecting a bumper shipment of AZ from India (some of which has just arrived hence the high numbers for the next fortnight) but the next bumper shipment is delayed.

Thinking positively, if there is only enough jabs to focus on 2nd jabs in April and they get a lot of those done, they'll be able to move more quickly down the age groups from May onwards. Surely by then Moderna and Novavax will be coming in.

buttery81 · 18/03/2021 09:55

April will be mostly 2nd jabs.

It’ll be good watching the 2nd jab numbers ramp up! My mum had her 1st jab in early February and is due to get her second in early April.

it'll be so good seeing 1st 25m / 2nd 10-12 million? by the end of April!

I think we are doing brilliantly. I refuse to be downcast. I have my second jab booked for April 30th which is great.
No idea what the EU are playing at. I hope it's not Brexit related because it is affecting their citizens.

We have an outbreak of 30 residents and staff in one of our facilities - ALL ASYMPTOMATIC - isn't that fantastic news. Proof that vaccination programme is working Smile

EasterIssland · 18/03/2021 10:32

Just seen this in The Guardian
On the Today programme this morning Prof Martin Marshall, chairman of the Royal College of GPs, said the vaccine supply shortage was “disappointing news”. He explained:

This is a bit of a setback.

What we’re going to see over the next few weeks, where we’ve got bumper supply for a short period of time, is we’re going to be pushing on with the people who are high risk, people over the age of 50 and under the age of 50 who are vulnerable in some way or other.

And then during April we’ll be focusing on those who need second doses - the highly vulnerable people who received their first dose back in January and February.

So the impact of this shortage of supply will happen on the group that we were hoping to start on in April, which is people under the age of 50 without any pre-existing conditions, who are now going to have to wait till May.

buttery81 · 18/03/2021 10:36

Thanks for that Easter - that all makes sense.

@Paddy1234 I can’t even put into words how fantastic this is!

Also... can we get to 25.6 million 1st doses today? Or is that a bit too optimistic? Grin

Should be easily achievable given how the patterns have gone so far.
EasterIssland · 18/03/2021 13:16

Hancock says he wants to clear up some rumours circulating.

He says there will be no weeks in April when people will not be getting first doses.

He says there will be no cancelled appointments.

And he says second doses will go ahead as planned.

He says there has been a delay caused by the need to retest 1.7m doses.

The Telegraph says the Indian government is temporarily holding up exports because of a concern about rising cases in the country.

Bordois · 18/03/2021 13:26

Moderna supply due soon.

16.8 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!
Frazzled2207 · 18/03/2021 13:26

via Sebastian Payne on twitter. Sounds positive.

NEW: Matt Hancock says that the UK will still deliver 12m coronavirus vaccine doses in April due to the need for second jabs

EasterIssland · 18/03/2021 13:49

@Bordois

Moderna supply due soon.
my worry is whether this come from europe... and they end up blocking them
EasterIssland · 18/03/2021 13:49

I keep checking whether my DH can get vaccinated... website keeps telling me no... stubborn website :D

PigletJohn · 18/03/2021 13:59

UK has had very good rate of vaccinations so far

I understand that about half the doses have been imported, and that we have exported none.

I find it totally unsurprising that other countries or alliances with fewer vaccines per head are reluctant to send their scarece supplies to a country that is in a better position.

Luckily for us, we are using the AZ supply, which some other countries are reluctant to use, so perhaps they are more easily obtained.

Daft question but I'm presuming that those who are 49 at the moment will become eligible to book as soon as they turn 50?? Thinking of DH here who will be 50 in the middle of April which comes at the time when they've said they won't be doing as many 1st jabs.

Frazzled2207 · 18/03/2021 14:08

yes is easily the highest 2nd dose numbers and also the 2nd highest total numbers ever

Frazzled2207 · 18/03/2021 14:13

now at a tantalising 49.4% of adults with a first vaccination (3% with second) however it is over 50% of adults in 5 out of 7 regions.
North East nearly there but London down on 38.3%

Frazzled2207 · 18/03/2021 14:13

sorry to clarify 49.4% is England only figure not UK
