Welcome to the new thread! I will copy over links from the previous thread soon.

Please note, this is a thread to share good news and for wobblers to be reassured. Doomploppers will be met with scorn and derision!

‘Does anyone else look at the variant names like car number plates and try and make words out of them? In my head they are the noisy and beak variants, much catchier IMHO.’

Brilliant. I am definitely doing that from now on.

Me too. I just skim over numbers and letters E25460J (random keyboard pressing there) means nothing to me. I want a word to read so noisy and beak they are now called Grin

Also agree, I can't get too het up about who is getting the vaccine before who. Yes there should be some order to it and the more vulnerable (for whatever reason: age, illness, job etc) should go first, but I'm not going to get annoyed when someone gets a vaccine who maybe shouldn't yet. Its just one more vaccination carried out as far as I'm concerned. I think in most cases they do appear to be carried out in order anyway. There will always be someone in the wrong place, nothing is perfect. Besides what good does getting worked up about it do? Absolutely nothing.

@RugsEverywhere

I spend a lot of time on the internet at the moment. I have a Science background, but I'm no Tracey.

All about variants

N501Y makes coronavirus more infectious. This is the mutation on the Kent strain that is most prevalent here.

E484K is the mutation in several concerning variants inc. the South African one and the new ones found here. This changes the spike which means vaccines are likely to be less effective. From what I've read my (wellish informed) opinion is that vaccines will do a reasonably good job of preventing serious illness and a so-so job of preventing infection in viruses with this variant. So not something to have a big panic about, but definitely worth keeping an eye on and looking to tweak jabs for this variant. Since this mutation has been seen in several separate strains it looks to be an advantageous mutation and I can imagine long term coronavirus will evolve towards having this mutation.

However, in the short term, we are lucky (!) our dominant variant is a highly infectious one so it's less likely to be outcompeted by other variants.

Does anyone else look at the variant names like car number plates and try and make words out of them? In my head they are the noisy and beak variants, much catchier IMHO. Grin

I’m also a scientist Grin but not practising and have a question about the mutations. To me it seems like a good thing that all these key variants have the same mutation - it suggests there’s a limit to how it can mutate? It would be more concerning if there were 10 different mutations that were all problematic. Is that right? Or is it just that this mutation is the quickest step wise and if we vaccinate against this then a different one will pop up?
QuantumWeatherButterfly · 17/02/2021 08:56

I genuinely don't understand why so many people's instinctive reaction to someone who doesn't immediately look like their over 70 (or I suppose, over 65 now) is to assume that they've somehow gamed the system.

It's very clear that a good chunk of people who ought to be vaccinated by now will be healthcare workers or extremely vulnerable. This would 100% be my first assumption. So rest assured - I'm not judging you!

J&j have filed for EU vaccine approval.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/02/2021 09:16

@FourTeaFallOut

J&j have filed for EU vaccine approval.
Have they given use the final research information yet? Last time I heard that was hold up approval. They had given it to America but not us.
FourTeaFallOut · 17/02/2021 09:21

I don't know, that's the last I heard on it too and that was weeks ago and now it's radio silence.

@OrangeBananaFish I could not agree with this more. I'm patiently waiting (not in any priority group) and looking on with joy at anyone and everyone getting theirs! If someone happens to be in the right place at the right time then good for them! We all need to be done eventually!

[quote Flev]@fuzzypuffling was this the article you were thinking of?

I love this. I love scientists. Whatever is going on with the virus there's this massive global community of extremely clever people working quietly away trying to stay one step ahead of things. I'm sure they've learnt a lot in the last year that will be useful for future illnesses/pandemics, too.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2021 09:48

That's the one flev. Thank you for being more organised than me!

thatgingergirl · 17/02/2021 09:56

Just checking in before a walk in the rain.

Loving naming the variants - I try to do that thing with number plates too - make up whole scenarios around them sometimes!

Good news about the J & J - is that the single dose one? (Another dilemma for those who want to choose!)

I'm being "done" on Saturday, Fuzzy! I'm going to have to offer my right arm - have a trapped nerve in my left - no one is touching that!

Inastatus · 17/02/2021 10:19

@RugsEverywhere - thank you for the variants info as I have also been having a wobble about them. Lots of ‘Tracy from Facebook’ types think that re-opening schools will result in an explosion of cases which will allow variants to mutate and escape vaccine. I’m sure that the scientists will have thought of this and, as you say, the vaccines are still likely to be effective in stopping serious illness.

My best friend told me yesterday that her DH is getting his vaccine this week. He is in a younger group than my DH and not cv but I’m genuinely pleased for him! I briefly wondered why but just thought good for them, maybe their area is getting through the list quicker than where we are.

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2021 10:21

Instatus yes I’m pretty sure it’s being considered. And yet..

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2021 10:22

.. bit vague and yet we still get so many mn posts going on about it

FourTeaFallOut · 17/02/2021 10:24

You did leave me hanging there MarshaBradyo!

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2021 10:25

Grin it was a bit crap in terms of meaning in hindsight

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/02/2021 10:27

😂 No I love a bit of suspense

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2021 10:36

thatgingergirl hurrah...vaccine twins! We can compare notes.

Tom Newton Dunn has just tweeted the below. I know it's very patchy and will depend to some extent on who GPs have on their books but great to hear some areas doing so well

"The vaccine roll out is going far faster in some parts than others. A 52 year-old friend with no underlying health problems was given a 1st jab in Battersea yesterday. By next week, his GPs’ surgery will have completed all 9 at-risk groups and don’t know what to do next."

Jump on a train and go to an area that needs more help😉

Hopefully this will be in part of the road map on Monday too. Its nice just to have an idea of where we are headed. I feel a bit more hopeful again now, it looks like it's only over there that the varient means neverending lockdown. After reading that weddings, christmasses and holidays will never happen again I have reminded myself that some people are just nuts.
midgedude · 17/02/2021 11:21

Happy to travel to battersea,., is it near London?

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/02/2021 11:42

If you want some balance about schools opening. Even one of mumsnet most notorious schools threads poster is in favour of them opening again on 8th March.

Reading a thread last night they actually said what I have been thinking. We open up schools for a few weeks before Easter. Then we can monitor the situation with a nice fire breaker of the Easter holidays.

There is the argument for safety measures etc still but only the stubborn few seem to still want them closed until 2030

Monkeytennis97 · 17/02/2021 11:46

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum Please stop peddling that we want them closed. We just want better safety mitigations than before.
