Welcome to the new thread! I will copy over links from the previous thread soon.

Please note, this is a thread to share good news and for wobblers to be reassured. Doomploppers will be met with scorn and derision!

I enjoyed watching this:

My mum just rang to tell me she has received her second vaccine. She works in a care home, despite not being far off 60 herself, and has been pulling 50 hour weeks to cover staff absences lately. I feel very relieved.

RaggieDolls · 15/02/2021 19:24

The Telegraph is reporting that the plans to ease rules about meeting one other adult outside (ie for socialising and not just exercising) might include an extension to the 'under 5's don't count' approach so that older children are also excluded from the headcount.

I really hope it happens as it'll be really good news. I could go for a walk with DD's bestie's mum so the children could see each other. As things stand they are too young to go out alone but count in the 'exercise with one other person' rule.

Wow great figures for today. 🙂

Yep it needs to be children under 12 don't count. Scotland does something like that doesn't it?

Agreed. All this talk about easing of restrictions is getting me so excited for the next few weeks!

Yes, and Wales. It's just heartbreaking for kids because at least adults can go for a walk with one other person. Children can't even do that in England if they are young enough to need supervision on a walk.
CornishYarg · 15/02/2021 20:12

Just seen this piece from Nick Triggle, BBC health correspondent and (in my mind at least!) honorary member of the Good News threads. It's not saying anything new but it's nice to see it on the BBC website.

"With every day that passes, it becomes clearer and clearer that the UK is winning its fight against Covid. Science, as Boris Johnson said, is in the ascendancy.

It is easy to forget this virus only emerged just over a year ago.

But now the UK has approved three vaccines for use - two of which have already started to be rolled out at speed. Another two are being assessed by the regulator after promising trial results.

There is confidence the mutations, while presenting a challenge, can be overcome. Plans are already being made to update the vaccines if needed to work better against new variants.

No vaccine is 100% effective and some people may choose not to take it.That’s why advances in treatment are vital too.

A cheap steroid, dexamethasone, is being widely used to improve the survival rates of the sickest patients. And last week it emerged an arthritis drug, tocilizumab, could also further improve survival chances.

There is still a long way to go, but there is a cautious belief in both Westminster and among scientists that each step made from now on should be forward not back."

Oh I hope this does happen. I've really struggled with the ridiculousness of being able to take my 2 year old for a walk with my mum but not my 5 year old. My 2 year old is still able to go to nursery so is having interaction there, whilst my 5 year old hasn't seen any one other than me and dad since before Christmas. It does seem very unfair on that age group.
GrumpySausage · 15/02/2021 20:13

Sorry, just realised that's not very positive. I am however feeling positive about the way cases and vaccinations are going. Smile

I can see there is some hot debate on this one if it goes ahead - and I wasn't entirely sure it could be considered good news in any simple sense - but it goes some way to suggest how we intend to cover supply to meet the overlap between the second doses and new doses.

Furries · 15/02/2021 20:22

Bloody hell, am gobsmacked that this thread has been threatened with deletion. It’s the one thing that has helped me retain a level of sanity, the majority of other threads are vile.

Really looking forward to next week’s roadmap announcement, having an outline of proposals will help people massively with getting through the coming weeks/months.

Not Covid, but local weather report for East Anglia is predicting temperatures of 17 for the weekend which would be blooming lovely.

TheChineseChicken · 15/02/2021 20:25

Having seen someone this evening complain that children eligible for free school meals also got a free place at a school holiday club with a hot meal (apparently this wasn’t fair as their own children had to take their own packed lunch), I’m bemused that this thread was thought not to be in the spirit of the website. Seriously

Don't worry. It is here for your wobble moments, thoughts or joyful bits too Smile

Actually I have been wondering about quality control with the Indian AZ. The south African supply came from there. Didn't perform as expected. I can imagine that is being looked into as part of the bigger picture there. Though obviously it also wasn't used with the longer gap extra too. Which would have played a part too.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/02/2021 20:35

To be fair to MNHQ I don’t think there’s any suggestion at all that the thread as a whole is not in the spirit.
Talking about other threads and posters is not allowed and it has been happening a bit here - I don’t think it’s any reflection on the veracity or otherwise of what has been said.

What I said did not link to another thread. It could have been something I’d read anywhere.

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum I know 😂 I’m such a wannabe miss Marple I’ve already a list of likely suspects !

But I’d hate the thread to be deleted so I’ll be on best behaviour going forward. I was thinking how much I’ll miss this thread when normality resumes.

Pomegranatespompom · 15/02/2021 20:45

@TheChineseChicken there’s definitely a lot more resentment if people think someone is getting something they are not 🙁

Rainbowsandstorms · 15/02/2021 21:17

@GrumpySausage how’s your five year old at social distancing? I’ve walked my five year old to some local fields where we’ve met my mum for a handover and they’ve gone off for a walk together before collecting her again from the fields after they’ve been for their walk. She’s absolutely loved some much needed time with her Grandma but is great at social distancing.

Worried1305 · 15/02/2021 22:10

Having caught up with BoJo’s briefing, I’m now very loudly singing “It’s the Final Lockdown” to the tune of “It’s the Final Countdown”. DP thinks I’m slightly insane tonight... Grin

New thread today and already on Page 10! That’s great news in itself!

@FuzzyPuffling - fab news, so pleased

Had a great day today at my vaccine hub, so many younger people (over 65s) beginning to turn up and a really upbeat vibe, plus we were also featured on Sky News earlier!

Maybe this thread doesn't have to go away when covid does. Maybe we can keep it as an optimists corner and broaden it out. There's so much negativity in the world anyway and it's nice to have a balance to that. There will always be scientific advancement, cute animals and picnics after all!

Honestly this thread has been a lifesaver. I lost all my official MH support when this happened and it wasn't easy but looking out for positive news to share has helped changed my mindset to look for the positives and I'm always excited to share good news. I could never be a doom plopper.
