So if we're going to live with covid

And counties like Australia and NZ have a no covid policy, how on earth will we integrate? I know the UK is too far gone. But how will we be allowed to travel if we keep getting vaccinnes but they don't always stop transmission because we have constantly new strains?

Or do you think other countries will give up on no covid policies too?

It's so depressing and crap as I'm in my 30s and know various people my age with long covid and having had a really hard time. This isn't like flu. It's going to be so hard fo so long. I really feel for those who are elderly or more vulnerable 😩 I suppose treatments will get better every year for when the vaccinnes fail. Flowers

Covid cannot be eradicated. I’m glad that people are starting to see that now.

Oz and NZ will open up eventually.

I honestly don't know. They might be able to keep the strict border controls and quarantines for years. I dont blame them.

They can do what they like.
Living with is the only sane strategy.

HairyFloppins · 13/02/2021 18:27

I was thinking this earlier. I don't think zero covid countries will want to risk letting people in. I think quarantining will be the only way to visit these countries for a while. But I hope not forever. Just won't be sustainable.

I honestly don't see how covid can be eradicated from certain places now.

icantthinkofanamehelp · 13/02/2021 18:41

when the vaccinnes fail

Sorry but this isn't true
These vaccines can easily be tweaked

partyatthepalace · 13/02/2021 19:03

I don’t think the vaccines are likely to fail. They will likely work to some degree with new strains, and have to be tweaked. I’m guessing we’ll all have a jab every year, and it will get increasingly broad spectrum.

I don’t think many countries will be able to afford to isolate themselves. Life has to go on, total economic collapse is not an option. We will learn to live alongside it.

Oaktree55 · 13/02/2021 19:07

Aus/NZ etc will open up once they vax their populations.........and then their problems will begin!

We’ll be in a stronger position then and tables will have turned.

Cloudsurfing · 13/02/2021 19:09

There’s many more countries in the world that aren’t going for zero covid than are. If those that are going for zero covid dont want to let us in then fine, that’s their problem. They will have to keep most of the world out long term.

Redrunbluerun · 13/02/2021 19:11

Get the vaccine 👌 works at the moment, can be tweaked and is our way out of this.

BananaPop2020 · 13/02/2021 19:14

The Gvt’s acceptance that we will have to live with Covid is the first sensible admission from them in months.

mangoandraspberries · 13/02/2021 19:17

I’m actually surprised that there are still people out there who think/thought that zero Covid was a possible strategy for us in the UK. It is no so endemic here that I can’t imagine us getting down to a very small number of cases, and even if we did, our track and trace system likely couldn’t stay on top of it. Agree the only way out now is a vaccine that works and regular updates to it. A few people will still catch it, but numbers should be much smaller and hospitals not overwhelmed.

No idea what Aus etc will do - presumably require quarantine for an extended period. But equally tourism is worth a lot to them - how long can they continue to require quarantine if they want to get that segment of their economy back up and running?

User133847 · 13/02/2021 19:26

We need to be better prepared for the winter months where it hits the most.

It could be. It’s just pretty much near impossible in the world we live in.
Ylvamoon · 13/02/2021 19:28

Yes, covid is here to stay. In the future, it will be there with flu and meningitis. Certain population groups will be vaccinated regularly or at some major change in their lives.
Aus /Nz will have to follow suit in order to keep their economies going. But for that to happen, most other developed countries will need a high percentage of their population vaccinated.

yeOldeTrout · 13/02/2021 19:32

I wonder how the Aus & NZ tourism sectors will develop. The old view was they would get cut off from Rest-World by nuclear war. What will happen to Taiwan or even... the Isle of Man.

Back in like 1790, if you ever travelled +500 miles from your birthplace, then you probably never saw your birthplace again. Maybe the world will go like that for residents of the Zero covid countries. Hugely less travel. Then there will be places that allow Americans in, as rest of World.

rawalpindithelabrador · 13/02/2021 19:33

It's not possible to eradicate it. Locking down isn't the answer.

GoldenOmber · 13/02/2021 19:36

There’s ‘zero covid’ as a temporary strategy until vaccines arrive, and then there’s ‘zero covid’ as a permanent plan. The second one comes with much less benefit and much higher cost and I don’t think Aus and NZ will want to go down that route.

TheKeatingFive · 13/02/2021 20:54

I guess NZ/AUS will vax their population and then have to take their chances. 🤷‍♀️

PrincessNutNuts · 13/02/2021 21:50

We're not all going to "live with^^ covid" though, are we? There are still thousands of deaths every week.

People who say that mean

"Sacrifice the lives of people I don't care about so that I am not inconvenienced in any way."

it's short term thinking, and in the midst of our third lockdown, with a panoply of new variants, shows a staggering inability to learn.

Vaccines are not yet the game changer we hope they may be, and as we open up Lockdown for the third time with only 1 or 2% vaccinated we'll find out their limitations I expect.

We need people to get used to less travel anyway because of climate change. Not thinking it’s a human right to jet off halfway across the world on a whim.

Over 15 million in the UK are now vaccinated, why are you getting your percentages from?

MaxNormal · 13/02/2021 22:15

*Where

whenwillthemadnessend · 13/02/2021 22:20

1 or 2%

We are on nearly 15% vaccines not to mention those that have immunity from the actual disease so I would've be surprised if we were at 40% all in
