Furlough / working backside off

Am I the only person who is hacked off seeing people frolicking about whilst on furlough, while my husband works 12 hour days ? Also we have stuck to the rules throughout. I appreciate that he is lucky to have a job but he is worn out , not a break from the screen, has had shingles and eczema over the lockdown months, but still carries on without complaint. Meanwhile others ( some through no fault of their own ) are furloughed and having a jolly old time . And who will have to pay the furlough money ??? Us !! Makes me bloody angry.

@copernicium

I'm pissed off that I work from home starting at 7:30am and my neighbours have partied most days until 2/3/4am for almost a year. I'm sure my taxes will be increased soon to compensate for it, whilst I couldn't get a penny when I couldn't work in the first lockdown.
You should have phoned the police.

LST@MotherExtraordinarie. so you'd have turned furlough down then?Conveniently not answering.

Yes, I did.

TheJerkStore · 11/02/2021 17:46

Tbh I'd rather be working than be furloughed. In some sectors that does feel like delayed redundancy..... and I say that as someone who is on their knees from working all hours and homeschooling part time.

Yes, I did.

presumably this was due to not wanting to lose 20% of your income and possibly your entire job, rather than out of selfless concern for the economy. and how fortunate to have that choice! and not be working a job where the entire industry had to shut, or have very young children and suddenly no childcare, or a vulnerable shielding household member, or any of the other dire circumstances some furloughed people have.
LST · 11/02/2021 17:49

@MotherExtraordinaire where did you answer me? Or did you mean yes you did get furloughed?

Yes, I did.

Right, so you were offered furlough and refused out of the goodness of your heart?

Ok then. You probably refused because you wanted to keep working on full pay. Which is what many furloughed people wanted too but the government ordered their workplaces to close so they had no choice.

LST · 11/02/2021 17:54

Bullshit you turned down furlough. What job were you allowed to choose?

GintyMcGinty · 11/02/2021 17:57

Would you prefer them to be on the dole?

TheKeatingFive · 11/02/2021 17:57

So if you refuse furlough in an industry that’s been shut down you what ...

Ask for redundancy instead?

Is that what you did OP?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/02/2021 17:57

Also who are all these people that are furloughed but their jobs are safe? If their jobs were safe there would be no need for them to be furloughed.

adrianmolesmole · 11/02/2021 17:58

So you were offered furlough and you turned it down, why? And then what, you got your job back or were you made unemployed?

Nice if you got a choice about it - most people didn't - you either were furloughed or you lost your job!

And you turned it down yet remain bitter towards them, why? Do you regret your decision or something?

LST · 11/02/2021 18:00

I cannot get over the complete idiocy of some people on this thread. Jesus 🤦🏼‍♀️

irishgal85 · 11/02/2021 18:00

Here in Ireland it's not a furlough as such. Ppl who are not working are on a PANDEMIC UNEMPLOYMENT PAYMENT (PUP) and only they pay it back. I won't be paying anything back as I have continued to work.

Cantstandsmugness · 11/02/2021 18:02

@MotherExtraordinaire

How dare you - my company was around for 55 years!!!! So not a start up that would have gone bust anyway! The owners have lost everything.

And how can you choose NOT to accept furlough when the government won’t allow your company to work!
I really hope this shit doesn’t happen to you for no fault of your own!!

LST · 11/02/2021 18:03

@Cantstandsmugness I hope it does. And she has to eat her fucking words when she can't afford to live.

DwangelaForever · 11/02/2021 18:04

I feel completely burnt out I've been WFH with a 2yo and a 4yo since the Thursday after St Patrick's day last year, has a bit of respite when pre school went back September to December there but its getting so hard now. I cried my eyes out so badly when they announced schools closing til 8th March.

I did feel so envious of those furloughed, still do because looking after the kids would be easier if I didn't have to WFH on top of it but I know loads of people have money worries and been made redundant etc so I know its not all netflix and lie ins lol. I just wished I had more time to be alone as I feel we are all just constantly on top of each other all day and night.

Kitcat122 · 11/02/2021 18:06

Brother is furloughed and only receiving less than 50% of salary as normally a high earner. It's a nightmare for them as Sil is a stay at home mum so they cannot pay all their outgoings. They've had to move. Be thankful your husband has work.

My husband is self employed and has approximately 3 months work since March. We have 4 children and are struggling financially so maybe be thankful for what you have.

quicklybeingdrivenmad · 11/02/2021 18:13

We own our own business we have been forced to shut 1st lockdown then re-opened, then in tier 4 forced to shut and now shut again, we are classed as self employed, so yes we did get the SEISS, but we employ staff so that and council grants have been used to top up their wages, we are now at the stage where all the bills coming in (cos they do not stop when we are closed our business off 77 years may go under ) my furloughed staff are not living it up they are worried about their jobs they may not have a job or an income anymore, I am not living it up so for some weird woman to tell me businesses fail aimed at some weird extroadinare women who seems to be clueless

Shelovesamystery · 11/02/2021 18:28

I work in a restaurant and have spent most of the last year on furlough. I can completely understand why those who have been working their arses off throughout the pandemic feel that it's unfair. In fact I agree that it's unfair.

I quite enjoyed furlough for about the first 3 weeks back at the start, but I quickly got fed up. It's just gone on far too long now. I miss working, I miss my colleagues, I miss earning my own money, I miss talking to someone other than my DC's and DH. I really enjoyed the few months that I was able to work and I can't wait for restaurants to open again so I can get back.

MotherExtraordinaire · 11/02/2021 18:42

@LST

I wa differed furloughing for childcare reasons, as I have a young child with additional needs and am cev.
MotherExtraordinaire · 11/02/2021 18:43

Differed=offered

MotherExtraordinaire · 11/02/2021 18:44

@Waxonwaxoff0

All those in my organisation are safe from redundancy if on furlough. In fact, we're recruiting.
Heyahun · 11/02/2021 18:45

Wow bit of furlough bashing there op - you admit it’s not people on furloughs fault - then you continue to give out about it

I was furloughed a bit last year - then back to work

Have been on flexi furlough the last few months - I never know what’s happening week to week - sometimes I come in and after 2 hours they send me home as not needed anymore

The company is in trouble - I’m constantly worried about losing my job - can’t get my mortgage anymore because of this so my life is on hold again! I’d bloody love to be working long days and be really busy.

MondeoFan · 11/02/2021 18:46

I'm on furlough and home schooling 2.children too. Some days are horrendous and I'd rather be at work. None of this is my choice and it's been the choice made by the government. I'm also on 80% wages so getting less money into the house at a time the children are eating a lot more, I had a large vet bill for my dog and I had to pay £550 to get my car through its MOT.
Even though I'm on furlough it's been far from jolly let me tell you

LST · 11/02/2021 18:47

@MotherExtraordinaire so say you weren't offered. Say the business you work at was closed completely. Turn it down then too would you? Go on benefits instead which probably wouldn't even cover your mortgage or rent?
