Well my theory, shared with a real local who agreed, is that everyone is so laid back they just don't get tested. Wink

I'm happy about South Hams but I have to go out of the backgate for South Hams levels, if I leave through the front door I'm in Torbay which isn't doing as well. Maybe I should turn the house round?

PurpleWh1teGreen · 21/02/2021 18:17

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not sure if the rate per square mile is monitored anywhere? I’m in an area of East of England with a case rate of 73/100,000 spread across 250 sq miles.

Corby at the top of the table is 31 square miles and a rate of 312/100,000.

ancientgran · 21/02/2021 18:18

Thinking about it boys3 you might be onto something. I think Devon water is vile and to add insult to injury it is very expensive. We had to have a filter fitted as it ruins my cuppa. Probably some ancient Devon magic they won't share with a newcomer like me, I mean I've only been here 25 years.

Firefliess · 21/02/2021 19:03

Devon is full of old people surely? So they've all had the jab!

Firefliess · 21/02/2021 19:05
I've found this:
www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-variants-genomically-confirmed-case-numbers/variants-distribution-of-cases-data
I saw that one about the different variants. But it really doesn't show you at all whether rates are going up or down does it? Would be interested in seeing whatever data Matt Hancock things he's seen that suggests the SA variant is in decline.

JanFebAnyMonth · 21/02/2021 19:12

Haven't checked that link but Hancock said a total of 300 SA variant cases had now been found, so not sure when that was...

ATieLikeRichardGere · 21/02/2021 19:33

From PHE Twitter can see 10th Feb it was +32 cases SA variant, 15th Feb +15, 17th Feb +18 up to a total of 235 cases but that’s all I can see there.

sirfredfredgeorge · 21/02/2021 19:35

@Fireflies I do think that is very relevant, Devon has very few jobs which are high risk and open in lockdown other than care homes which it has lots of, so the chances of transmission in places are likely less than places with factories etc. that will still be working.

MRex · 21/02/2021 20:00

I didn't realise we had the Finnish B.1.525 "doesn't show up on PCR tests" variant at all, never mind 50 cases! I'm still really confused about how they find them.

I think it's natural for the route down to be a little bumpy, especially with lots of bits of surge testing, so I'd wait a week before calling it a plateau. What I feel we want to see is every last MSOA coming back out of the purple colour, for cases over 400/100,000. From what I can see, the dark colours are in persistent retreat to advancing green.

Again that's frustratingly partial information isn't it? 18 out of how many and over how long? I hope Matt Hancock has seen some better data, or been briefed by someone who has.
Firefliess · 21/02/2021 20:10

Does the Finnish variant maybe show up sometimes in PCR tests @MRex? Or does it show up in lateral flow tests? This data on different variants is definitely hard to make sense of!

lunar1 · 21/02/2021 20:22

Not sure if it's ok to ask on this thread, but does anyone know why there was no update for Israel yesterday or today? They don't normally miss the weekend figures.

MRex · 21/02/2021 20:26

No idea @Firefliess.

Maybe they declared the pandemic over there now @lunar1? (Joke. No idea, sorry.)

🤣

ATieLikeRichardGere · 21/02/2021 20:57

I don’t think B1525 (detected in multiple places) and Fin796-H (detected in Finland, doesn’t show up on PCR) are the same??

WarriorN · 21/02/2021 21:04

.

Not in my care home they haven't.
MRex · 21/02/2021 21:28

Ah sorry, you're right. B.1.525 is the Nigerian one, but it was then found in so many other places that they aren't sure it started in Nigeria.

ancientgran · 21/02/2021 21:46

Brixham had a bad outbreak, maybe linked to the fish market, cold food places seem to suffer. We have fishing fleet, quite a few dairies and food factories. There are probably more factories down here than people realise. We do have alot of care homes but also ship and boat building, Axminster carpets.

We have military bases as well, marines, navy in Plymouth and Dartmouth.

We have three universites plus art colleges that were open from September.

We aren't generally densely populated but lots going on. Of course tourism is a big industry and that is closed down although we were busy last summer and in October half term.

So it is a mixed picture I think.

ancientgran · 21/02/2021 21:48

Just thought I am an oldie in Devon who has now had the jab. I tend to forget myself.

boys3 · 21/02/2021 21:52

Case rate as compared with population density would be more relevant and is quite easily calculated. Of more interest is case rate as compared with deprivation, and certainly deaths as compared with deprivation, the latter which the ONS have done on an age standardised basis, although anyone could do it based on a crude rate. And equally as it has been mentioned about Devon, age, be that median age, percentage in certain age brackets etc.

For population density attached are the scatter graphs for all English councils based on both the latest seven day rate per 100,000 and the cumulative rate, Then to follow the same graphs but one set just with district councils and another for the upper tier councils (unitaries. mets, london boroughs).

I'd say those graphs show a very weak correlation, if any @boys3. I'm not sure population density is that big a factor. People don't spend their time neatly spaced out standing in the countryside do they? They go to workplaces, schools, pubs, etc which all have much the same population densities in rural areas as they do in urban areas. Or they're at home, but the virus doesn't jump though walls, even if you live in a city. Public transport usage may be a factor (clearly riskier than driving, which is more popular in rural areas), and the nature of local industries - so areas that are normally reliant on things that are closed currently (eg tourism) or where the people are vaccinated like care homes (mostly - @ancientgran!) are probably better placed to see declining rates than other areas. We were talking about NE Lincs earlier - what's the main industries there? Fishing? Call centers? Factories? Maybe things that haven't closed much with the current lockdown? It's not a big tourism area certainly.
