Thought I’d ask on here as you are the most likely to know! Both myself and DS1 tested positive 2 weeks ago. No real symptoms apart from a loss of smell, odd feeling in nose and a headache. However our local area has just been told it has to have surge testing due to the South African Variant being found. My question is would they be able to tell me if ours was the South African Variant?
Apologies if that’s a daft question, I’m just interested because we definitely haven’t travelled abroad.

cathyandclare · 17/02/2021 17:52

It's too soon to say that. Cases over 7 days are still 24.1% down week on week. Even if you're just looking at the figure reputed today, last weds there were 13013, so flat if anything.

Firefliess · 17/02/2021 17:52

Not up, it's a fall in last Wednesday. But does look like the fall might be starting to slow down. Most likely because a large part of the fall during January was London and parts of the South of England falling steeply from very high rates. The fall has been much less decisive in the Midlands and North and those regions now comprise a larger proportion of cases than they did in January.

Looks like cases going up again

No last Wednesday they were around 13000. Still going down

Notmulan · 17/02/2021 17:53

15,144 last Wednesday

ancientgran · 17/02/2021 17:53
@ancientgran I suspect the staff at your care home were so cross and indignant at being left behind that they all jumped at the chance! I do think that all the emphasis on who gets it first and who has to wait is actually really beneficial in terms of combatting anti vac sentiment. There's a very strong urge to want something if everyone else wants it and it's in short supply.
I think that would work but to be fair to the people concerned they were keen from the word go. We tend to have staff and residents on quite a long term basis, some have been there for over 20 years so know each other well and the staff are very protective so they wanted it as much to protect the residents as to protect themselves. I'm just happy for them.

Notmulan · 17/02/2021 17:54

Sorry I’m totally wrong but can’t delete

Notmulan · 17/02/2021 17:56

13,013 so down but not as steeply

NoGoodPunsLeft · 17/02/2021 17:59

ancientgran glad that your care home finally got their jabs!
Me too! Has your DH had his?

They're sequencing a proportion of all cases. I think (from a previous poster in this thread) that if they sequenced your sample and it was the SA strain, they'd be in touch telling you so and asking more questions about your movements and contacts. But if it was over of the normal UK strains I don't think you'd be told. There is lots of concern about the SA strain, but it's still only a small proportion of cases currently, so most likely not what you've got.
ancientgran · 17/02/2021 18:22

@NoGoodPunsLeft Me too! Has your DH had his?

Yes he has thank you. I'm doing quite well as my son, nurse, has had it, husband has had it and now all my colleagues. I'm 67 so won't be long. Just need to get the residents done now, they say they should be done before the end of the month so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks, staff have all had it but still waiting for the residents. Hopefully now long now.
ihearttc · 17/02/2021 18:23

They are doing Surge testing here though because they have found the South African Variant in our very small postcode area There have only been 11 cases apparently in our postcode over the last 2 weeks (we live rurally) and 2 are us so I wondered if we were the ones that prompted the Surge Testing? I didn’t know if there was a way to find out.

Firefliess · 17/02/2021 18:24

This gave me a chuckle earlier twitter.com/LiamThorpECHO/status/1361959447971643392?s=19

Looks like it answers my question about where the new shielding group were identified by GPs or an algorithm Grin

FleeingBlue · 17/02/2021 18:26

Could the slowing down simply be a consequence of PCR surge testing picking up asymptomatic cases that would otherwise have not been found?

I just know that there was a poster in this thread who had been contacted to say that they had been found to have the SA variant and were asked lots of extra questions as a result. So if you've not been contacted i don't think there's anyway if knowing whether you have the normal strain or weren't sequenced.
Firefliess · 17/02/2021 18:29

That could be a factor. But wouldn't explain the Zoe app possibly pointing to a levelling off of cases.
ihearttc · 17/02/2021 18:30

@Firefliess

Thank you! I just feel awful if I’ve somehow caused this (which I know is daft cause I’ve done everything right).

MRex · 17/02/2021 18:46

You haven't caused anything, it's a virus, it moves between people. (Unless you were holding illegal raves in the shed?)
Also as above you probably weren't the cases, or they would have asked for your contacts.

Doomsdayiscoming · 17/02/2021 18:50

@CoronaIsWatching

Not really. Wednesday is normally higher than the three preceding days.

However, the lack of testing actually makes this figure concerning.

Hopefully a blip due to the cold weather.

Cornettoninja · 17/02/2021 18:50

Re: ZOE could we be seeing the virus work through environments like workplaces and family units but it’s now affecting the estimates noticeably because we’re in lower figures?

I don’t know if I’ve explained that very well, but it wouldn’t be unexpected for one person in a family to display symptoms and then for another three in the same household to start showing symptoms a few days later.

ihearttc · 17/02/2021 18:52

@MRex

Thank you for being so kind. It’s a very very small rural village. Honestly by looking at the local FB group you would think the Bubonic Plague had come. It’s likely they want to stone the person who apparently brought it here...and I’m only half joking!!

Paddy1234 · 17/02/2021 18:53

I work in healthcare and the numbers of lateral flow tests being done is huge! Does anyone know if these are included on the testing stats or if they are just PCR tests

“Virus tests include PCR tests conducted in laboratories and lateral flow device tests that give results in less than an hour, without needing to go to a laboratory”

Gov dashboard.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/02/2021 18:56

The ZOE people are saying it could be people that have been vaccinated showing side effects. The are investigating it apparently.
