I met one of those "I'm not putting that in my body"

people this week. I didn't think they really existed.

It was at a (virtual) networking thing. Professional people who are in a category where some LAs are vaccinating us and some aren't. Most people in the "room" had already had the vaccination, except this one very vocal woman.

An educated woman, 40ish, in a position of responsibility, working in a sector supporting vulnerable people (hence the access to vaccines). I've met her before and she always seemed very switched on, socially responsible and very capable in her role.

As I said, I thought these people were a bit of an internet myth, but if they did exist, I didn't expect them to be people like this.

Have you met any?

I know a few people who don't want the vaccine, and I don't care. Their body, their choice. I don't consider them anti-vaxx for doing so.

The anti-vaxx movement is a long established one that is about all vaccines, not just the Covid one. I wish people would make this distinction when they bitch online about their friend who is worried about the unseen long term effects of a new vaccine.

I will be declining it if offered (am not in the 9 groups) but it will be easier to tell a white lie and say to friends etc that I will be having it so it does not start arguments or a guilt campaign.

Kendodd · 07/02/2021 19:39

All vaccines carry a risk. And so do all drugs. Balanced against the risk of covid, I'd take the vaccine.

I just came on to say the same. I hate the term ‘anti-vaxxer’. It’s so derogatory and nasty. My parents are worried about the safety of the new vaccines but they are definitely not ‘anti-vax’ in general.

And as others have pointed out where do we draw the line on refusing hospital treatment. I know many of my parents’ peers who drink excessively, eat shite, are overweight, do no exercise and have lifestyle related conditions such as type 2 etc but I know they'd accept/expect hospital treatment and medication for it. On other hand my parents don’t smoke, drink, are slim and healthy and work out 5 days a week. They’re doing their bit trust me.

crazyontheweekend · 07/02/2021 19:46

I just re-read the title of this post, it’s so fuckin condescending and naive. “One of those” Confused

Heyta · 07/02/2021 19:48

Can’t get worked up about it tbh - their choice.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 07/02/2021 21:13

@Tobebythesea

I’ve met plenty of people who don’t want the vaccine (in their 20s and 30s). They all give the reason of the risk of infertility.
Presumably they are all very careful about unprotected sex and getting STDs that lead to infertility too?
Abraxan · 07/02/2021 21:47

You do know the vaccine doesn't reduce transmission?

Yes it does. Recent news in this shows that they do restrict transmission too.

The people who say vaccine refusers should be denied treatment..... well, I am glad they are not in charge. The NHS is not about who deserves treatment.. it is based on who needs it and if push comes to shove (which is rare) who will have the best outcome. I worked for the NHS and treated prisoners. A mentor during my training treated one of the Kray twins. All treated with respect... their crimes, morals etc did not come into it at all.

Met 3 and now all 3 want the vaccine ... one is a Paramedic and has just had it didn't want it before

Have you any idea how ridiculous this makes you sound? You are not superior to everyone else because you know how to use YouTube in such a way that you find conspiracy videos.

I think a lot will as they see other people have the vaccine and be fine with it. Hopefully a lot of people refusing just have anxieties and questions that will ease over time.
saraclara · 07/02/2021 22:49

You do know the vaccine doesn't reduce transmission? Therefore, whether your hairdresser has it or not, it will have no impact on if you catch the virus.

It's like people have heard the word vaccine and jumped on it before actually knowing how the vaccine works and what it is meant to do.

@Shipwrecked2019 it almost certainly does reduce transmission. The only reason that it no-one's definitively said so, is that the data isn't yet available. Also, the govt is jumping on that lack of total certainty in order to make sure people still conform to the rules after they've been vaccinated.

It has been said by many scientists that it is very unlikely that the vaccine won't prevent transmission. But it takes time to gather the data.

LastTrainEast · 07/02/2021 22:51

@chaosrabbitland

yes i have and so what ,? . if they dont want to have a rushed vaccine then thats upto them really . none to sure i want it either
Not rushed. They skipped the long pauses in between stages and got on with it. The 'it was rushed' is an anti-vaxxer thing along with "and you know they put a chip in it don't you"

Where do you stand on the chip thing?

saraclara · 07/02/2021 22:54

We are still learning whether or not the current Covid-19 vaccines prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2. It is likely they reduce the risk of virus transmission but probably not completely in everyone. This is one of the reasons why it will still be important for people to continue wearing masks and practicing physical distancing, even after being vaccinated.

@CoopsMalloops

I have met a few and I really don’t get what the bitching is about. I’m really not interested in what someone does or doesn’t want to do with regards to their health. It’s their choice. Honestly- there’s a lot to be said for minding your own business. It really is wonderful.
but it's not THEIR health it's yours too. Like choosing to drink and drive and taking the chance of crashing into a bus stop full of people.

I used to know someone who would say "I drive better with a few drinks in me" These people are like him.

StillGoingToWork · 07/02/2021 22:58

I married one of those people but when I married them they seemed sane...ish.

Fine, do what you want to your own body but do I want to hear about it all the flipping time especially when I've got stuff to do?

If they carry on bombarding me with this I'll ask him to go and live somewhere else!

Lastfreakinglegs · 07/02/2021 23:23

If the vaccine works so well for you, why would you need to worry about others not taking it? Genuine question.

24butfeeling80 · 07/02/2021 23:27

I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have severe anxiety in general but it’s at its peak around medications and having reactions.

For this reason I’m sort of ‘I don’t want that in my body’ but because I’m scared of having a severe reaction. But then the non-anxious part of my brain knows I should have itSad

Pinkmarsh · 07/02/2021 23:35

I know very few people that want the vaccine when it becomes available to them.

Rockhopper81 · 08/02/2021 00:02

@Lastfreakinglegs

Is this not the approach parents who refuse to vaccinate their children take?

Vaccines work best when the majority of people have them, so that those who can't have them have herd immunity - there is less chance of a virus being in a community to infect people, so those who medically cannot have a vaccine are far less likely to be exposed to said virus. If enough people who can have a vaccine choose not to, the likelihood of said virus being in a community goes up.

This might be fine for the people who have chosen not to have the vaccine because they don't want it - they may be unable to have severe illness with said virus - but people who cannot have the vaccine may be more likely to be severely ill with said virus, so it's a more serious situation for them.

Fewer people vaccinated against a given virus means more opportunities for a virus to be in a community, so a greater likelihood of serious cases of said virus.

Bloody hell, have you not heard catching more flies with honey. Why do some people thing calling others selfish, conspiracy theorists etc is going to somehow make people that are genuinely anxious about the vaccine go "ok, xyz on MN called me names so I will go and get the vaccine after all".

shivermetimbers77 · 08/02/2021 00:15

I have a few colleagues who have refused the vaccine , although most have had it. Although I generally believe that people have the right to decide what to believe and what to put in their own body, in the case of this vaccine I believe we all have a social responsibility to make sure as many people as possible are vaccinated, to reduce the spread and protect the vulnerable. Surely in this situation it comes down to the greater good.

AnnabelleMarx · 08/02/2021 01:16

Can you just run us through which steps of the usual approval process have been missed?

In comparison to say the top three vaccinations in longest use?

Perhaps you could also run us through the specific flaws you’ve found with the research and development process for just one of the vaccines. How would you have structured the trial differently?

You’ll be able to do that off the top of your head, because you really understand the development and regulation of pharmaceutical products. You’re certainly not just talking out of your arse.

Grannycurls · 08/02/2021 03:10

I'm also one of those.

I'm also one of those people who read ingredient lists on packaging, don't touch processed food, am fussy about fats, don't drink (more than an occasional glas of wine) or smoke, and have (reluctantly, because I have a sweet tooth!) given up added sugar in my foods.
Guess what, some people are like that. Get off your high horse.
