NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

Which is another reason I’m so relieved to have this thread. It was funny yesterday. What I needed.

I feel I’m looking forward to Feb 22 a lot I hope we get some reprieve in main areas

TheChineseChicken · 12/02/2021 07:36

Good news about the Pfizer vaccine against variants. Should we be looking into providing it as the second dose for those who have had one dose of AZ? Seems like between them all bases would be covered

TheChineseChicken · 12/02/2021 07:38

Oh, that’s being included in the dual vaccine trial. For some reason I thought that was just AZ and Sputnik

Same here regarding the top bit.

Really need this thread ATM as today I'm struggling. Things are getting better. Things are getting better. Things are getting better.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/02/2021 08:04

Things are getting better. Coronavirus rates are dropping consistently each week, hospital admissions are down, deaths are down. One quarter of the adult population, including the most vulnerable in our population are already protected from the worst of this illness (or will be in 3 weeks) in line with a government target no less Shock, the bank of England are optimistic about a decent recover by the end of the year and we are only a month away from spring.

Sadly I think they are going to be reporting on this trial to late for most first 4 categories to get the second dose of Pfizer by the 12 weeks. Unless it's hurried up in some way.

TeaInTheGarden · 12/02/2021 08:23

Does anyone know anything about when we can expect news on J&J being approved? Is it with the regulators at the moment? Bit heard much since the trial results....

FourTeaFallOut · 12/02/2021 08:30

We have a rolling review of the j&j jab, that's all I can contribute off the top of my head.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/02/2021 08:33

According to this, 6 days old, MHRA were still waiting on the final data to be submitted. Since then there's very little in the news on it.

TeaInTheGarden · 12/02/2021 08:43

Thank you @FourTeaFallOut. Hopefully it won’t be too long then if they’ve been doing the rolling review....

TheChineseChicken · 12/02/2021 08:44

@tobee yes, unfortunately. Maybe it could be used as a booster later in the year though to avoid having to manufacture new vaccines?

You would hope it goes through regulatory approval as Janssen know what they are doing with regards clinical trials

FourTeaFallOut · 12/02/2021 08:48

Undoubtedly, it's just waiting, isn't it?

Hmm. I think Pfizer are doing a South Africa variant booster? And can produce one more quickly than AZ?

Frazzled2207 · 12/02/2021 08:58

On vaccines I believe there is going to be full data on novavax released in the next week or so (I’m on the trial) - so that will be on the “to approve ASAP” list too.

TheChineseChicken · 12/02/2021 09:19

@tobee I've lost track TBH!

Inastatus · 12/02/2021 09:27

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum and @tobee - thanks for directing me to the one liners thread. I am sitting here crying with laughter 😂

Thanks @FourTeaFallOut lovely summary. That's really added to my Friday feeling this sunny morning 😊❤️ better days are just around the corner 🌈
TJ17 · 12/02/2021 09:35

With the latest info regarding variants do we think Pfizer would be the better one to have these days? (As much as I'd like to be loyal to our AZ 😅)

RockaLock · 12/02/2021 10:02

The media seem hell bent on talking down the AZ vaccine.

I have however read reports that say, despite the antibody response to the SA variant being quite weak (hence seemingly not stopping as much mild illness), it still had a strong T cell response (so should stop severe illness /death).

For some reason this didn't make the headlines - I guess "AZ only 10% effective!!! Stay locked up forever!!" made a better headline Hmm

I would certainly take the AZ if/when offered.

a relatively upbeat update from dr Neil Ferguson - he's usually one of the more cautious/pessimistic ones isn't he? Pasted from the Guardian

The key scientist advising the government as part of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group said he is “hopeful” that the nation could be in its “final lockdown”.

His comments came as the Prime Minister faced pressure from Tory MPs not to delay the timetable for easing lockdown.

Mr Johnson’s “road map” for easing England’s third national lockdown is due out in the week starting February 22, with March 8 earmarked for a wide reopening of schools.

Prof Ferguson, the Imperial College London academic whose modelling was crucial in shocking Mr Johnson into imposing the first lockdown, said the nation is “in a better place than I might have anticipated a month ago”.

“The lockdown has really driven down cases quite fast,” he told Politico’s Westminster Insider podcast this week.

“They’re basically halving about every 17 days at the moment or so, and that means in a month’s time - the Prime Minister’s talked about potentially reopening schools, we might have some bandwidth to do that, at least primary schools.

“And if we continue to see then a continued decline without large outbreaks, then perhaps starting to relax other aspects of society the following month.”

Prof Ferguson estimated that around a third of the UK population now has some immunity to Covid-19, partly because so many people have been naturally infected and partly because of the vaccine rollout.

He acknowledged it will be “a bumpy road” and that “I’d be a fool to try and predict out six months” but that he believes the vaccines will start allowing restrictions to be eased.

But he echoed other scientists in cautioning that social distancing measures must be relaxed slowly in order to prevent another spike in infections.

“I’m hopeful it will be the final lockdown, so long as we are relatively cautious in coming out of this lockdown,” Prof Ferguson said.

apols I'm in a pasting good news mood today. Apols for the Daily Fail link too but I like this one too - headline is
When everyone over 60 has had a vaccine, deaths could be reduced by a staggering 96 per cent, with hospitalisations down 80 per cent.
