The old one filled up before we could link a new one but here we are.

I wonder whether anyone here can help - if not, I'll post a new thread.

I have elderly parents living in Wales, too far from me for a day trip and garden visit. Combining the regulations from the two countries, is there CURRENTLY a target date when I will be able to:

  • Cross the border from England
  • Visit my parents inside their house
  • Stay overnight?

I know there are various dodges and ways round this, for example renting self-contained accommodation local to them and doing a series of garden visits, or re-instating the support bubble that allowed me to see them once last year. I could also, of course, choose to ignore some or all of the regulations, but the worry of me doing that would completely negate the benefit of the visit for my parents.

However, I wondered whether there was a 'current target date' when it would be totally legitimate in both countries to visit family and stay overnight?

No there's currently no target date unfortunately and Drakeford isn't in the business of giving even slight indications. I would assume it will be when two households can mix in both countries' rules, which is likely at least a month away. If neither of you have a support bubble though, it's already allowed under that in both countries?
Sadik · 28/03/2021 12:30

You can definitely only stay overnight in someone's home in Wales if you're in an extended household (equivalent to support bubble) with them. If you're a single person you could be in one with your DPs now, it's no problem that you're in England.

As I understand it, travel from England into Wales seems pretty certain to be allowed from April 12th.

The next review date for widening the criteria for extended households is April 22nd.

Sadik · 28/03/2021 12:34

This article summarises the likely dates going forwards reasonably well.

I think it's really very probably that drastic increases aside we'll be back to the rules on extended households that applied pre-Christmas, & that you'd be able to be one with your DPs even if you're not a single person.

I think that would be fine even if England are further behind - once you're (a) entitled to travel freely into Wales and (b) entitled under Welsh rules to be an extended household, I think you're good to go!

Frazzled2207 · 28/03/2021 12:37

@cantkeepawayforever
I am in a similar situation legally I think there’s only been a period of about 3 weeks in the last year when we could do this (area of England with extra restrictions almost continuously)
Won’t be staying overnight and aim to stay in the garden but will be crossing the border this week on the grounds that my dm’s mental health is really suffering. She really needs to see her grandkids.
I think crossing the border is legal from 12th. No idea as to the other two and I don’t think there is any indication yet.

I am not a single person.

As I say, I managed to visit them (alone) last year in the very brief period that I was allowed to form an extended household with them, by isolating for 10 days after the end of term (I was in school from 1st June) and by the remainder of my family in England only allowing themselves the freedoms that didn't break the Welsh extended household rules. I couldn't force that on the whole family again, hence the single visit.

It doesn't help that, as a teacher in 6 hours a day close contact with over 30 others, a) I am restricted in when i can travel by school holidays - it's a LONG way for a weekend - and b) I can only travel after a week or more of each holiday has elapsed to allow the risk of carrying infection acquired through contacts within my class to decrease.

DdraigGoch · 28/03/2021 13:17

They haven't been announcing any target dates for any relaxation, it all happens at short notice.

OP posts:
Sadik · 28/03/2021 14:32

I can see that makes it much harder if you're teaching & limited to school holidays. I would have thought though if you're being an extended household with them you don't need to get that caught up in your other family members following Welsh rules so long as you're comfortable with it from an infection-risk viewpoint? Realistically no-one's going to know! I'm assuming your DPs have been vaccinated & will be due their 2nd shot very soon if they've not had it already?

Sadik · 28/03/2021 14:33

The 22nd April for further extended households has been trailed quite a bit, obviously it'll depend but I should think it's very likely.

Sadik · 28/03/2021 14:36

I've just seen - they're going to lay out the Welsh timetable for April & May on Thursday. Hopefully that will give you more of a chance to plan @cantkeepawayforever

cantkeepawayforever · 28/03/2021 14:39

Thanks Sadik! I'll hang on till then - and then repeat the exercise for the CEV family members living in Scotland. Being a far-flung family definitely has its disadvantages at the moment!

I am in South Wales. My daughter is a frontline nurse, so can she come into my house as I have had both Pfizer vaccines and so has she?

Not legally. Realistically though the chances of either of you having it, passing it on to each other and being symptomatic after jabs is slim to none. I assume she is also tested several times a week as well.
Mrsorganmorgan · 28/03/2021 16:26

Thank you ImAllOut. I don't know if she is tested, but I don't think I will take the risk, although I miss her so much. She doesn't say much about what is happening, all she says is "everything is fine" and she is fine.

PurplePansy05 · 29/03/2021 08:29

Morning all, does anyone know what the official guidance regarding wfh is in Wales and where I can find it? Thank you in advance!

gov.wales/taking-all-reasonable-measures-minimise-risk-exposure-coronavirus-workplaces-and-premises-open

@PurplePansy05 I hope this link works. You have to scroll down a fair bit to find the guidance on home working. Not sure if this is enshrined in law or if merely guidance.

Maybe someone with better knowledge than me can expand.

PurplePansy05 · 29/03/2021 17:21

Thanks @Lupinhere37, I'm a bit annoyed that suddenly there are no clear messages from WG on this during their reviews and the information is pretty buried as you say! Not helpful. Thank you for this xx

Lupinhere37 · 29/03/2021 20:33

Hi @PurplePansy05 I totally agree. WAG have been so dictatorial on some many other COVID related matters but this looks so lame. I’m annoyed too!

justasking111 · 29/03/2021 21:02

I think politicians are as beaten down as us. Too lacking in knowledge to argue with the scientific bods in case they make it worse. America's gung ho attitude hasn't killed any more folk percentage wise than we have, in fact less

I've had both Pfizer jabs. I'm going home to South Wales in a few weeks and will be staying with my sister and her kids; she's had the first part of the AZ jab.

I've followed every single rule throughout this, and will continue to do so once my trip is complete. But I'm going to spend three days with my family. I haven't seen them in nearly two years. It's not legal; but I'll be doing it anyway.

ArosGartref · 31/03/2021 00:16

I lost the thread! Glad to check back in so I can continue to restrict your liberty from my home town of Merthyr.

Doilooklikeatourist · 31/03/2021 19:10

Took DH to have his Jab today , all very organised and easy to do at the drive thru in Carmarthen Showground ( I think every traffic come in the entire world is being used there in the one way system )

Just heard on the news that outdoor hospitality will be open from April 26 th , ( not sure of the opening times or whether they’ll be able to serve alcohol )
Maybe he has a company that makes gazebos ?

Yet healthy places like gyms and swimming pools are still being closed until sometime in May

I understand Dripford doesn’t like Boris , and has to do something different to prove a point , but really ?
Chlorine water and being counted in and out ?
What’s so dangerous ?

justasking111 · 31/03/2021 20:50

Outdoor hospitality maybe open but drakeford will not confirm to the hospitality industry if it has to be alcohol free from April

DdraigGoch · 31/03/2021 22:01

I had my jab this morning. Should've bought some paracetamol earlier, spent the afternoon/evening feeling sorry for myself before I finished work and found a newsagent which was open.

I have a back condition and the only thing that really helps with it is swimming. I've given up on pools reopening and started trying to acclimatise myself to the sea again but not everyone has that option. I know everyone has their pet sector they want prioritised but I really do think pools and gyms should be high up the priority list.
