I'm having a particularly blah day so far, just really fancy a coffee with friends and a day out somewhere other than the bloody park.

Lupinhere37 · 06/02/2021 10:39

Good morning allSmile
Thanks for the new thread; really pleased to have found you.

I’m having a blah day too. My yr12 DD reached rock bottom last night, worrying about her a levels and generally feeling hopeless. She bawled me out for trying to help her see the positives; says I’m out of touchSad. She is slowly disengaging with life because she insists that all of her peers feel the same hopelessness about exams, uni places etc.

I just want to be able to meet a friend and talk it through.

And I don’t even think it’s going to snow where I am. At least snow would have given us something different to look at!

Just seen this on the gov.wales site. Some impressive statistics and info regarding the vax programme. Latest figure is 34,000 more which is fab,

As the total vaccinated exceeds more than 523,000 today, this now means almost one in every six adults have had their first dose of this life-protecting vaccine.

As Wales’ plans to protect the nation continue to grow, here are the latest stats: [as of Friday 5 February]

more than half a million people across Wales have received their first dose - this will rise to 600,000 within a matter of days
that’s the same as filling the Principality Stadium in Cardiff seven times or the Eirias Stadium in Colwyn Bay 86 times
…or someone every four seconds
of the top 4 priority groups, Wales has vaccinated:
83% of over 80s
62% of 75 to 79 year olds
34% of 70 to 74 year olds
and more than 112,400 frontline health and social care workers
Wales is on track to have offered vaccinations to those eligible people in the top four priority groups by mid-February, if supplies continue at their current rate
around one third of everyone in the top 9 priority groups have been vaccinated too
last week, Wales vaccinated more people per population than any other UK nation
weekends are the busiest time, especially for primary care vaccinators. This means it can take a few days for data from these days to be uploaded
there are at least 34 mass vaccination centres open across Wales at any one time and most are open seven days a week
six more mass vaccination centres are due to open in the coming weeks
we have more than 400 GP-led clinics – the original target was 250 by the end of January
More than 17 hospital sites are also providing vaccines
very little vaccine has gone to waste, less than 1% has not been used. This is exceptionally low, and thanks to the committed workforce delivering this precious resource

On that basis, and with the continuing reduction in cases, it really is extra frustrating that we can't drive for exercise.

@Lupinhere37 it must be awful for teenagers of her age when they should be driving and socialising, doing God knows what. I loved going on day trips to
university towns with friends in Year 12.

DdraigGoch · 06/02/2021 16:30

They won't permit driving for exercise because it makes it more difficult to differentiate between the locals going a short distance and those coming in from much further afield so that they can climb Snowdon in jeans. Easier to have an almost blanket rule.

OP posts:
ImAllOut · 06/02/2021 17:21

Yes I understand the reasoning but it's still frustrating. That said I've not been stopped driving to work throughout lockdown on a 40 minute commute so I'm not sure how often people are stopped outside of the usual national park type hotspots. I've driven over the bridge several times for work too and not seen anyone stopped nor do I know of any colleagues driving similar distances who have been stopped.

DdraigGoch · 06/02/2021 17:40

It appears to be mostly car park checks. The only people I'm aware of being pulled over while on the road are those who triggered an ANPR camera in a patrol car because their car wasn't insured.

Really pleased with the Wales vaccination roll out, go Powys! They've done an amazing job here.

wibblewombat · 06/02/2021 17:50

Yep, they check the car parks round here.

Murinae · 06/02/2021 18:23

They stopped drivers on the A470 going into Cardiff in Jan just after the Xmas holiday period but haven’t seen them since

FranklinHot · 06/02/2021 23:09

Greysofa who commented on the thread right before this one about worries about her younger kids missing education but the only catch up announced so far being focused on the most disadvantaged only, I sympathise as I feel the same, much as I know the worst off need the help. I'm also concerned as my kids are in Welsh medium schools (youngest is in foundation phase) but DP and I don't speak Welsh at home. I'm surprised there's been no mention of catch-up for that cohort especially. Parents who don't speak Welsh but who sign up for Welsh medium for their kids do so on the basis on an immersion system to get the kids acquiring the language quickly. There's been lots of that time lost and you simply cannot replicate it via home learning. I am surprised that Plaid Cymru aren't pushing more on it tbh.

Thank you @DdraigGoch marking place!

Doilooklikeatourist · 07/02/2021 09:01

@Lupinhere37 my DD aged 23 had a really bad day last Wednesday ( lost her job due to covid and cant see any positives at the moment )

She and DH drove to see the in-laws on Friday as we've not seen them since Christmas , and they wanted the company
Didn't see a police car either way . I realise its not strictly in the rules , but it did then all good

Personally , i think it should be the older pupils back in school , the 15 to 18 years opposed to the 3 to 7 year olds

DH has heard that Drakeford is planning on opening self catering holiday accommodations for Easter , I'm surprised at that , but we’ll see

Next big announcement due on 19th Feb I think

ImAllOut · 07/02/2021 09:16

Vaughan Gething has already said not to expect any significant changes at the next review so I assume nothing will be different unfortunately.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 07/02/2021 09:48

I agree re the Welsh language immersion. I do speak Welsh but I’m not as confident as I am in English and my written Welsh has mistakes. My children pretty much refuse to speak Welsh to me. Welsh is the thing they really will need to catch up on. And all primary education is Welsh medium where we are so a lot will be in the same boat.

hellswelshy · 07/02/2021 09:57

Thanks for the new thread! Really reaching my limit for walks now, yesterday's was so muddy. Looking forward to spring now and things improving week on week Smile

110APiccadilly · 07/02/2021 09:59

I also agree re Welsh immersion education. I'm fluent (2nd lang but grew up in a strong Welsh speaking area so it's natural to me to speak it) and even so I'd be a bit phased by having to homeschool in it (my DD is not school age so this is thankfully hypothetical!)

Frazzled2207 · 07/02/2021 10:16

Totally agree re the welsh immersion thing. I grew up speaking welsh at home but most of my friends did not. You cant expect English speaking families to homeschool in welsh! Also surprised there hasn’t been more about this.

Your poor DD; it’s so worrying for this younger age group; competing with more experienced people for the few jobs around. I really hope she gets back on her feet soon. My DD is sinking by the day. This week, three of her friends have dropped out of sixth form because they couldn’t cope with the Teams lessons in new subjects and basically deteriorated mentally.. My DD doesn’t want to drop out but I’ve been shocked by who the three kids have ; wouldn’t have predicted that. I’m doing all I can to keep her buoyed up; long walks, movie nights, helping with homework, spending a small fortune online shopping, online tuition, extra text books. I recognise I’m extremely fortunate that I can financially do that though. There will be other kids in a far worse position than my DD and it breaks my heart for them.

I’m delighted that my 73 year old dad has his vaccine this evening though. And my many elderly neighbours are being vaccinated this week.It weirdly feels like the run up to Christmas....excitement in the air that something is happening!!

It’s the funniest thing. My dad has spent so much time voluntarily shielding (not specifically designed CEV) that he is bursting with excitement about his 50 mile round trip this evening, to get his vaccine. He’s even sorted a new audio book for the car!!Grin

OMG the mud everywhere walking the dogs, the only place is the beach now which means more people around and lots of police checks.

Anglesey - heard today that the cases lately are in Llanfair PG and Menai Bridge, unfortunately nursing homes. UK wide hospitals and homes really are a huge problem for everyone. It does mean, however, that folk should stop glaring at their neighbours who leave the house sigh....

I would suggest anyone who has the jab to be extra careful and do less than you were doing, during the next week. I keep reading about care homes with cases that didn't have any before. My concern is that rather than just taking 7 days for immunity to kick in, when being jabbed immunity is actually slightly reduced, then gradually builds back to be better than it was before. In that case jab day and the following day are when people could be more at risk.
