End of lockdown by April

Daily mail is reporting that we may be out of lockdown completely by the end of April with no restrictions. This is once all the over 50s have been vaccinated which looks set to happen.
This is great news.

If this is correct I could hug you but I think its maybe a bit early to say

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 04/02/2021 17:12

Will there then be 3 months of rolling 'everyone is ill'? Not meaning to piss on fireworks, genuinely wondering.

IcedPurple · 04/02/2021 17:18

Would be fantastic but didn't Chris Whitty say yesterday that the idea of having all over 50s vaccinated by the end of August - let alone April - would be 'optimistic'?

Eckhart · 04/02/2021 17:21

What have they based that on?

Eckhart · 04/02/2021 17:23

Have you actually read the article, @LemonSherbetFancies? They're not reporting that this will be the case at all.

Eccle80 · 04/02/2021 17:28

Having looked at it, I don’t think that is what they are saying at all, just that at the current rate of vaccination, the top 9 groups would be done by April 7th for first dose, so would have built immunity by April which may mean things could begin to ease.

@IcedPurple I thought he said it was all adults having both vaccinations by end of august that was over optimistic?

speaksofty · 04/02/2021 17:30

At this point I would be happy with just the schools reopening.

Louisa7747 · 04/02/2021 17:31

@IcedPurple yes he was referring to every adult over the age of 18 receiving the first dose by May and both doses by August.

LemonSherbetFancies · 04/02/2021 17:33

Definitely read it as all restrictions eased by end of April if the vaccination continue as they are

Restrictions eased by the end of April? Very likely.

Restrictions completely removed by then? Unfortunately not.

Eckhart · 04/02/2021 17:40

The headline itself has a question mark after it. They're not confidently stating anything.

Sillysop92 · 04/02/2021 17:40

What will people complain about then 🤣🤣

lunapeace · 04/02/2021 17:41

Even if businesses aren't all allowed to open (and really that will need to change) I can see people's attitudes to staying away from friends and family massively changing once those that most need the vaccine (even if only first dose) have had it.

I think that's already happening. People aren't going to shout about it, especially on MN, but I reckon lots of people are quietly visiting family even though it's against the 'rules'.
chocolateisavegetable · 04/02/2021 17:44

It must be true if you read it in the Daily Mail (anyone remember that song?)

Carlislemumof4 · 04/02/2021 17:51

April 7th happens to be just after Easter weekend. Now wondering if school will be closed until Easter hols and feeling deflated.

I read the article as suggesting they could start reopening some businesses from late April. Certainly not all restrictions lifted!

User133847 · 04/02/2021 17:57

I'd imagine a gradual phasing of restrictions by April, but still some restrictions through 2020. They wouldn't have called Glastonbury off recently if it was anything like back to normal by May.

BonnieDundee · 04/02/2021 17:59

With Glastonbury is it not more that they cant make firm plans which they need to do NOW for such a huge event?

Paying the money back! Grin
SilverGlitterBaubles · 04/02/2021 18:05

Does this include everyone also having second doses? Because it's going to be a huge task to go back and vaccinate all those millions done so far again with a second dose while also moving forward in the list. I suspect the DM article had a lot of 'could' and 'might' words in there as usual. At this point it's all unknown how things will work out. I would much rather they did this slow and steady and actually got it right this time.

IcedPurple · 04/02/2021 18:09

The difficulty of getting event insurance will also have been a factor.
Mousehole10 · 04/02/2021 18:27

I would absolutely love that. Don't think it will be no restrictions at all by then, but I will take end of lockdown plus a few restrictions but able to see friends and family in small groups by then.

3littlewords · 04/02/2021 18:31

Furlough ends at the end of April so unless that gets extended again I would assume that we are working towards everything being back open by then

Mousehole10 · 04/02/2021 19:02

They'll keep extending furlough like they have done all year. But the over 50's are supposed to be vaccinated by end of March and I can't see how they can keep the main restrictions after that, so hopefully there will be a lot more open by then.
