10 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4145954-6-3-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to observe our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain and one-legged trousers - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a truly tremendous 10,021,471 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 18.9% (or 1 in every 5.3) of all UK adults.

There’s no doubt about it - there is an unmistakable light at the end of this long, long tunnel and every day it’s getting brighter. Come on folks - let’s do this!! Grin

I just don’t get why some EU countries are saying they won’t use AZ for over 65s. The EMA has signed off the vaccine for all ages. The AZ vaccine is the one that is more easily administered. The reason for it is lack of data but the likelihood of the immune system being substantially different when you hit 65 is low. The data will come out amongst over 65s soon and these countries will have egg on their faces. I just don’t get why people in these countries are not kicking up more of a stink. Vulnerable people are going to die.

I agree with you but it is a very political decision. The cocked up by ordering to late. By saying it isn't suitable for under elderly they stop some of the shortages blame. They will probably have enough to vaccinate their cev and health care workers.

Also I expect they then get to start vaccinating their healthy workers early with out being held up to scrutiny. Which they hope will give then a head start economy wise. Hopefully the citizens in these countries will call them out on this.

In the short term it actually helps us. They can't argue to be given doses produced here if they won't use it to protect the people most in need. By the time we finish the priority list they will have better supply deliveries.

*for the elderly

Hopefully since the EU have a higher proportion of Pfizer vaccines than we do, there shouldn’t be a significant impact on their vaccine rollout by withholding AZ approval for over 65s. They can continue to vaccinate over 65s with their supplies of Pfizer and vaccinate under 65s with AZ. They have crucially not said it’s unsafe for over 65s, simply that there is not enough data for them to conclude on its efficacy for over 65s. If this is their view having reviewed the evidence better they wait until they have the data (which I fully expect to come soon) and continue with their Pfizer rollout for over 65s and vaccinate under 65s with AZ.

There are a lot of EU countries that can’t use Pfizer as they don’t have the freezers to store them, a lot of EU countries were holding out AZ vaccine, which makes EU look even more questionable in some of its decisions

Blessex · 06/02/2021 14:05

The EMA has approved the AZ for all age groups. It is some individual countries that are not following that approval.

CaveMum · 06/02/2021 14:20

England figures look like being 401,636 so we could be on track for about 475,000 for yesterday’s 1st jabs.

CoffeeandCroissant · 06/02/2021 14:21

403,577 additional vaccine doses registered in England yesterday (401,636 1st doses, 1,941 2nd doses)

34,791 in Wales
44,718 in Scotland
? in Northern Ireland

Frazzled2207 · 06/02/2021 14:23

ooh fab will be very close to half a million. Possibly slightly over. Yey!

Frazzled2207 · 06/02/2021 14:25

Wales' figure is 10% of the population, and they were slammed just a fortnight ago for being rubbish. My parents are in that figure. Is brilliant.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/02/2021 14:25

Wales is at 34,791
Scotland at 44,718

NI won't be in till later but was at 8k this time last week, so we'll be above 475k but I expect less than 500k.

We just need another bonanza Sunday to keep the rolling rate high 🤞

buttery81 · 06/02/2021 14:25

Hurrah! Looking forward to 4pm as always Grin

True they did look worryingly slow. Flying now🥳

That's one of the things the U.K. task force got right - twigged that we'd need very cold storage/transportation.

Piece in the times today about the task force. Well done England...and Bingham, Dix, McCubbin et al!Thanks

Yes, probably 490 something in total, likely around 492k, so close to half a million but not quite there yet.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 06/02/2021 14:35

On the subject of freezers. I saved this from an article about Johnathan Van Tam. I just thought it was fantastic :

While most of his colleagues were preoccupied by intensive care unit capacity in hospitals, protective equipment and the R rate, Prof Van-Tam would keep repeating in meetings: 'We need to buy freezers and vials. The vaccine is the key.'

This is an incredibly lovely (and unexpectedly moving!) thread to read.

DH (GP) is running a vaccine clinic today, for the umpteenth weekend in the row. We barely see him in the week and the house is a shit-hole, washing not done etc. and kids crawling up the walls.

It is easy to forget how important what he's doing is, and selfishly want him home to at least hold the baby whilst I do stuff.

Thanks for the reminder that he is a small part of something bloody brilliant.

alaian · 06/02/2021 14:46

@SchnitzelVonCrummsTum thank you for all the hard work your husband is doing Star

This is wonderful news Smile

I avoid the news as it's seldom positive, so with that in mind does anybody have an idea when my DM and DAunt may be vaccinated? They're mid 60's but no underlying health conditions.

My mother was asking me today and i didn't have a clue.

It depends what you mean by mid 60s and where you live. Posters on different threads have started to report 65+ (group 5) getting appointments now in some areas. Others are saying there hubs are still on 70s or cev.
