10 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4145954-6-3-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to observe our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain and one-legged trousers - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a truly tremendous 10,021,471 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 18.9% (or 1 in every 5.3) of all UK adults.

There’s no doubt about it - there is an unmistakable light at the end of this long, long tunnel and every day it’s getting brighter. Come on folks - let’s do this!! Grin

So what percent of the pop has now had first jab?

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 12/02/2021 21:39

13.2 million was 25% of all adults in the UK

1 in 4 adults (I think)

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum

I love it when you come and talk numbers MumGrin

Would you or anyone else happen to no what the hospital admissions or patients in hospital numbers roughly were when we started opening up first lockdown?

We’re still quite a lot higher unfortunately.

Going on patients in hospitals:-

First wave:-
Highest number - 21,687 (12th April)
Number on 1st June (roughly when world started opening up again) - 7,246

Second wave:-
Highest number 17,675 (23rd November)
Number on 4th Dec (roughly when world started opening up again) - 15,721

This wave:-
Highest number 39,236 (18 January)
8th Feb (most recent available) number 24,352

So from that point of view we still have a while to go before the world will start to open again.

BUT - the numbers are falling fast. Much faster than they did in the other two waves. 18th Jan - 8th Feb is exactly 3 weeks. In that time the numbers fell to 62% of what it was. If this pattern is repeated then by the end of Feb the number in hospital will be c15,000. So roughly where we were when we opened up at the beginning of December. Unless, of course, we see an increase in the falling due to the vaccine. Which is, I think, a real possibility. The rate of falling for hospital admissions is going up.

buttery81 · 12/02/2021 21:56

@whenwillthemadnessend 26.4% of the UK adult (over 18s) population, and 20.6% of the UK population as a whole Smile

Reactions to vaccine

From what I hear, it seems that the majority of people who have had the vaccine also are used to getting the yearly flu jab and in nearly everyone there has not been any reactions.

However we have had a few dead arms and feeling rough for a day or so in the younger population who don't have yearly flu jab. Not anywhere like getting Covid though.

Please if anyone is BAME - get vaccinated!!!! I cannot emphasise the statistics skewing to this group being hit badly no matter age, weight etc.

Icequeen01 · 12/02/2021 22:31

I'm going to get my jab on Sunday! I work for a children's home who have only just become eligible for the jab. Unfortunately, the virus ripped through us and the children just after Xmas and we had a really serious situation on our hands of struggling to have enough staff to look after our children.

No idea which jab I'm having but sooo pleased. Having had Covid five weeks ago I NEVER want to go through that again!

Encouraging news from Israel, their hospitalisation rate for over-60s has dropped below that of under-60s for the first time in the pandemic.

First Friday announcement of half a million!

Oh wow - I glanced at the chart earlier and thought "well the high point is a bit down on the last few weeks, but at least it's still over half a million". Didn't realise it was only Friday!

Actually at this rate we should hit 15 million (or very very close) in two days. So the minor confusion early on about whether the first four priority groups contain 13.9 or 15 million people when accounting for overlaps didn't even matter in the end, because the Feb 15th target will be met either way Smile

This is brilliant news. Grin

Like others on the thread, I am concerned about the lack of take up in the BAME communities; we need to do more to address their questions around the vaccine.

I am wondering how the rollout will work when the first group need the second jab. Will it just pause whilst we go back and do group 1,2,3, etc?

PuzzledObserver · 13/02/2021 08:53

The February target will be met by raw numbers, but remember that some in later groups have had it already - combination of some areas surging ahead and already being on group 5 and even 6, and then the end-of-day using up thing (which seems to be either good or bad depending on what the poster thinks of the eventual recipient and whether others are more deserving!)

However, the target was for everyone in groups 1-4 to be offered a jab, not to actually receive it. Hancock could claim that because of the public announcement last week, everyone has been offered a jab.

Meanwhile, I think of the GP receptionists up and down the country going through their patient lists and thinking, “Well, we texted Mr Jones 3 weeks ago, then again at the beginning of last week, then we phoned yesterday and he didn’t answer. Should I try again?” How are they supposed to know whether Mr Jones never turns his mobile on because it’s only for emergencies, or is deaf and didn’t hear the phone, or is staying with his daughter..... or is a hardline anti vaxxer who is deliberately ignoring them.

Londt · 13/02/2021 09:27

That’s great @Shehz21

Lots to be positive about today Smile

I dare not ask elsewhere but I’m struggling to understand the focus on infections and the R number re the things reopening as per the roadmap.

We could have the entire population infected but if no one progresses to hospitalisation, a severe illness or death, does it really matter? If the vulnerable are vaccinated, shouldn’t the focus be on deaths?

buttery81 · 13/02/2021 09:36

@PuzzledObserver with your Mr Jones scenario, even if the GP receptionist hasn’t managed to reach him, presumably he will watch the TV, read the newspapers and speak to other people he knows, so hopefully the message will have got through to him that he can contact his GP for a jab or book an appointment online?

OP posts:
PuzzledObserver · 13/02/2021 09:50

@buttery81 you would hope so. My point is that the receptionist won’t know that for a fact. If they’d actually spoken to him and he’d said no thanks, that would be different.

I think at some point you have to stop making efforts and it just goes down as one more thing to be flagged up next time he makes contact for some other reason. There are plenty of people who are desperate to be invited.

PuzzledObserver · 13/02/2021 09:57

And when I say plenty desperate to be invited, I include myself, even though I’ve already had the virus. But there are still plenty of posts on here along the lines of “DM, 78, hasn’t heard anything,” and “vaccinate the teachers to get schools open.”

It is right to prioritise those most at risk of severe disease and death, no question. But the most important thing is that we keep on vaccinating at the maximum rate possible, because the quicker we reach whatever magic percentage it is, the quicker the hard to reach, those who can’t be vaccinated and those who won’t be vaccinated, will be protected by everyone else’s immunity.

The Covidvax live tracker is saying 14.5 million - astonishing!

Is there anyone on here who can confirm that you need the same vaccine for the second dose as the first? My OH was listening to a radio programme yesterday about not having try same vaccine

Entirely agree!
Delighted that four of my colleagues (teacher) had invites out of the blue this week and trollied on down there pronto!
. If they are doing 40-something teachers no excuse for keeping schools closed after 8March.

In theory you are supposed to have the same vaccine for both jabs but they can use the other one if there is a shortage.
Paddy1234 · 13/02/2021 13:40

Thank you

CaveMum · 13/02/2021 14:19

That should mean 15m total. Or am I getting overexcited?
