This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4145954-6-3-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to observe our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain and one-legged trousers - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a truly tremendous 10,021,471 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 18.9% (or 1 in every 5.3) of all UK adults.

There’s no doubt about it - there is an unmistakable light at the end of this long, long tunnel and every day it’s getting brighter. Come on folks - let’s do this!! Grin

Ok, so I am 21 hours on from receiving my first AS Oxford vaccine. I am CEV, nearly 60 (!) (how did that happen), and I have severe inflammatory arthritis. I stopped my immunosuppressive meds two weeks ago in preparation for the vaccine.

I have no side effects at all so far, which is good I suppose - but I do need signs of some sort of immune response to know it's working. Fingers crossed.

My joints, on the other hand, are causing massive problems today, just from the little bit of walking I had to do to get to the pharmacy. Someone on another thread mentioned paracetamol - I'm on Zapain and Naproxen today!

But I feel terrific. I am vaccinated against the very worst effects of covid-19, and of course I was carry on being careful, but I definitely feel a new sense of impending liberation. Smile

PuzzledObserver · 10/02/2021 08:11

@Frazzled2207 in that case I have no idea what is going on it Scotland, but their other percentages look good.

Frazzled2207 · 10/02/2021 08:16

@PuzzledObserver

Indeed. I reckon as others pointed out after counting their numbers they expanded the criteria.

Flossie44 · 10/02/2021 08:20

Thatlaughinggenome - I’m so excited to be vaccinated so I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now!! Great news!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/02/2021 08:21

ThanksTheLaughingGenome How long do you have to be off your meds for? It's an aspect of vaccination many of us a blissfully ignorant of, but your attitude is so positive despite your pain.

The Rheumatology dept wrote and suggested at least one week before, and at least 10 days after.

I spoke to my family and we decided on 2 weeks + 2 weeks, to aim for maximum vaccine efficacy with minimum likelihood of a flare-up.

The NHS central booking system was a boon for being to get a slot exactly in the middle of treatments. (I self inject so have that element of control fortunately.)

DS brought me a mug of tea at 6.30 so life is good.

Frazzled6 · 10/02/2021 08:46

I wonder whether it would be good (of it can be done) to use second doses of a different vaccine that does seem to protect against the South African variant like Moderna.

Hope the next two weeks are not too painful @TheLaughingGenome.

DdraigGoch · 10/02/2021 10:24

First Pfizer dose reduces symptomatic risk by 65%, second brings that to 80%. Hospitalisations are dropping rapidly among those who are vaccinated. There's also evidence that the Oxford jab IS effective for over-65.

buttery81 · 10/02/2021 10:27

Yay, go @TheLaughingGenome! Smile

Is that here or Israel Ddraig?

You're only supposed to blow the bloody glycoproteins off! 🦠

DdraigGoch · 10/02/2021 13:23

It's UK data, apparently soon to be published.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2021 13:24

That's interesting Genome, my rheumatology dept haven't contacted me about it, but I decided to skip that weeks meds and the following week to give my system a good chance to recognise intruders.

Very encouraging figures! I’m looking forward to today’s official total at 4pm - it would be tremendous to get over the 13 million mark! Grin

13 million should be in the bag❤

DdraigGoch · 10/02/2021 15:34

Looks like we'll see circa 30,000 more doses than last Wednesday then

InterfectoremVulpes · 10/02/2021 15:41

My dad got his appointment booked for Sunday so that will be both my parents done 🤩

buttery81 · 10/02/2021 16:12

We're over 13 million!!!! Yahoooooo!

13,058,298 people have now received their first dose of vaccine up to and including 9th February.

I do love those big round number milestones! Grin

My next target is 13,250,000. That will mean a quarter of all UK adults will have received their first dose!

And more good news, this time from the WHO:

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine can be given to adults of all ages, according to scientists advising the World Health Organisation.

The assurance comes after a number of countries decided not to give the jab to those aged over 65 due to doubts about its effectiveness in that age group.

The WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation (Sage but not to be confused with the UK's scientific advisory group with the same name), also backed the UK approach in delaying the second dose of the vaccine.

Given that news, I wonder whether Spain will have a rethink over their plan not to give the AZ vaccine to the over 55s?

🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

I can’t believe how close we are to the 15th Feb target. I was so pessimistic about reaching it when it was announced and I am so so happy to be proved wrong.

Also worth noting these figures:

Cases today: 13,013
Cases last Wed: 19,202

Deaths today: 1,001
Deaths last Wed: 1,322

So cases are down by 32% since last Wed, and deaths are down by 24%!
