This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

@Unsure33

I really don’t understand threads like this . It’s what he stood for not necessarily the individual .

You don’t have to join in . It’s not compulsory .

Just don’t do it if you don’t want to .

Why join a thread just to be nasty .

Disagreeing with another pointless, mawkish clapathon isn't being nasty. It's just a different opinion to yours.

@ImaLuckDragon

Captain Tom did a great thing raising so much money and being knighted for it in his 100th year. He certainly went out with a bang. However, I feel the Government is using this as an opportunity to connect with the masses, largely the ITV viewers.
Yes. It's just yet another PR stunt they've bandwagonned do distract from the shameful mess they've made of everything.

@Gcnq

I think people might be clapped out? I think a different idea would be better like plant flowers or something.
Or plant trees. Much more useful all round that virtue signally clapping.

Ditto if you point out that Covid was almost non existent in Barbados until holidaymakers descended in December, and now infections are rocketing. You're begrudging a hero his dying wish, apparently (according to Twitter and Facebook).

This is also same Barbados that has been actively encouraging people to come to Barbados and infact are offering financial rewards to those who want to go over and stay for a longer period of time to work remotely from there. Apparently the scheme there and on other islands, such as Antigua, have been quite well received.

MrsDrudge · 03/02/2021 17:55

Not for me.
Maybe a better gesture would be the government matching the amount of money he raised to donate to NHS, or using to fund a scholarship or training for NHS workers.
Even better would be to pay a decent wage to all key workers. Clapping doesn’t pay their bills.

Oversize · 03/02/2021 18:01

The only thing I'd be clapping...
Oh you know what - I'm just too disgusted by this wankstain of a PM and his shower of shits to even bother articulating it.

jerriblank · 03/02/2021 18:01

@MissyB1

I wish people would stop all the virtue signalling. We can all pay our own private respects to this amazing man without having to prove it by standing on our doorsteps. If one more person asks me to clap for something I will clap them around the head!

Hard agree.

Peppafrig · 03/02/2021 18:03

Didn’t hear a single clap

Frodont · 03/02/2021 18:03

Nothing here!

TableFlowerss · 03/02/2021 18:03

@PurpleDaisies

I mean people cry at films and they aren’t even real so it’s not totally unimaginable why people would be sad about the tragic death of a 36 year old with two kids.

Which is why I said I understood sadness but the level of hysterical “grief” was absolutely bizarre.

Well I can’t disagree with you really. A couple of tears perhaps but flown blown grief stricken is OTT
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/02/2021 18:04

My neighbours are still clapping and cheering. No doubt I'll be told I was missed like back in the summer!

TwirpingBird · 03/02/2021 18:04

I live on a road of about 60 houses, mostly pensioners and the odd young couple. 2 households came out.

TheChip · 03/02/2021 18:05

I dont think anyone took part in my street. I had a look out of the window and couldn't see anyone

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 03/02/2021 18:06

Not a sausage here (I'm on the fourth floor and can see/hear several streets, plus my blocks of flats).

Good to know I'm not the only one. All this competitive mourning was making me feel like the odd one out!

MarshaBradyo · 03/02/2021 18:07

I didn’t hear anything here

OliveTree75 · 03/02/2021 18:07

There was a few in my street, clapping extra loud to make sure we all heard!

shinynewapple2021 · 03/02/2021 18:10

Oh well , I'm obviously the odd one out here! DH and I have just been out to clap, a couple of our neighbours out too .

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/02/2021 18:13

I saw two maybe three houses on this street clapping and we had fireworks too just to provide the privacy the family requested. It’s honestly bad enough when you lose someone you love, you just want time to get used to the idea with your family. All this must be awful for them.

Rosehip10 · 03/02/2021 18:17

Already loads of tweets saying "I was out, shameful lack of response from others" Angry

Chocolateswissroll · 03/02/2021 18:18

Quite a few clapping on my street followed by someone playing you'll never walk alone.

Same on my fb! Annoying
mum2jakie · 03/02/2021 18:20

It's all kicking off on our local Facebook group with people complaining that nobody else was clapping. Give it a bloody rest! We're not performing seals...

WalrusWife · 03/02/2021 18:23

Silence here and I live on a military base...

Peppafrig · 03/02/2021 18:24
