This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

As driving through my village at 6pm,saw two households out clapping!

Brunt0n · 03/02/2021 18:25

Delighted to say we didn’t hear a thing here

littlepeas · 03/02/2021 18:26

One very loud clapper here. It scared the dog!

NorbertMeubles · 03/02/2021 18:26

No one out here either. Thankfully

icecreamgirl94 · 03/02/2021 18:28

We clapped. We clapped for a hero who fought a world war for our freedom and who raised millions for the NHS at the age of 99. Couldn’t care less about the politics of it.

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 18:29

Whole street was out here

Same here.

That's my way of looking at it too, and why I did.

SquirmOfEels · 03/02/2021 18:33

Ripple of applause along the street here, and I sent a soppy text to my mate who is working in the thick of it

Do you clap on your step for all the veterans or just this one ?
User133847 · 03/02/2021 18:36

Forgot all about it anyway but heard a few loud bangs and a bloody firework that terrified that dog. Realised then that was it for Captain Tom at 6pm.

No problem with clapping at all if that's how people want to pay their respects, but that's not on.

@Peppafrig if I was aware every time a veteran died and a national clap was organised for them then yes I absolutely would. Unfortunately that’s out of my control, so I wear a poppy and observe the silence every Remembrance Day, and will always be bloody grateful for what every one of them did.

Did you not know OP, the louder you are, the better human you are 🙄
ImsorryWilson · 03/02/2021 18:38

Is this still the sensible thread?

it has helped me concentrate at work all day and not get irritated.

I'm hoping the poppy and remembrance day will fade away over the next 20 years. Time to move on.

I believe remembrance day should always be taken seriously. It's one day. The poppy unfortunately has gone from a symbol of respect to "you must wear one" and has lot its meaning.

I do think it's a problem the extent to which we cling so much to the Second World War regarding everything. Our finest hour, sure, but it can become counterproductive.

Nothing here - glad to say. I'm sick of Johnson trying to appropriate other people's achievements to make himself look less of a bastard.

This.

WingingItSince1973 · 03/02/2021 18:45

I'm lying here in bed with covid and all the windows open for air but didn't hear any clapping which is not like my street as they were all out with pots and pans, fireworks etc the first clapathon. But now reading the expressions of disgust from other areas who were the only ones out clapping tonight. Honestly some of the comments calling people out are disgusting!

MsFogi · 03/02/2021 18:45

Nothing here despite a few neighbours virtue signalling on the group WhatsApp.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/02/2021 18:46

Many people genuinely wanted to show their appreciation within a community, feeling that it would be a stronger symbol of encouragement if done together not alone

If it led to anything positive I'd agree, but I've been involved in too many things where masses shout and keyboard hammer for this or that ... ask them to join in some kind of practical effort which doesn't involve "look at meeeee" and they're nowhere to be seen

Me too. And I speak as somebody whose father fought in WWII and suffered unimaginable horrors in a POW camp.

It isn't up to you to decide it is time to move on. You move on all you like and leave those of us who like to show our respect to war veterans to do what we want. Remembrance Day isn't just about The Great War and WWII. It is also about more recent wars such as in The Falklands and Afghanistan.

I'm sorry to read that I have all sympathy for families who suffered badly during the war. Last year it suddenly struck me that we needed to stop the almost fetishism of the poppy. Hopefully after the 100 year anniversary we can let it fade into history.
