I’m seeing this as a thing on social media.

No. Surely there comes a point when everyone says "enough is enough". We're staying at home, we're home-schooling, we're socially distancing, we're not seeing our loved ones, we're working from home, we're wearing masks, we're sanitising our hands, we're clapping for anyone who wants a clap and quite a lot of people who don't, we're taking the fact that the economy is fucked by Covid on the chin, we're taking the fact that the economy is fucked by Brexit on the chin, we're taking the fact that we can't travel abroad on the chin, we've accepted we can't go to festivals, go to sporting events, go to gigs, go to the theatre, go to a club, go to the pub, go to the cinema, go out to eat, try clothes on in shops, browse in shops. We've accepted it all.

Now please for the love of all that is good will the fucking Covid police leave us alone in our joyless hobbit holes without trying to find yet another way to make life just that tiny bit more unbearable?

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 31/01/2021 21:42

Between my glasses, my earphones and my one mask my poor ears are working hard enough

I like you

You seem like my kinda person

WalrusWife · 31/01/2021 21:45

I can see the posts on here already “well in Tesco today, people were only wearing 1 mask, I wear 10 at once and a hazmat suit, everyone should be doing what I’m doing OR STAY HOME GRANNY MURDERERS!”

The New York Times has a few articles recently recommending double masking indoors. Its because the new variant is so contagious. My mom does this (US) I don't (UK). If we had a slew of news articles with scientists and doctors saying we should doubt mask in high risk places I would. Why not? A paper and a cloth mask isn't going to feel much different I'd imagine.

Throwaway99 · 31/01/2021 21:45

I will not wear 2 masks. The fucking one mask police are bad enough without some twat counting how many masks I have around my face..

Skyppy · 31/01/2021 21:47

@megletthesecond

Yes. I double mask if I've had to go inside for a medical appointment. Medical grade first and a tighter cotton mask over the top. I've not been in a shop this year but I might double my mask wearing when I return in a few weeks.
Same here. I have put off all medical appointments recently except for vaccine. I double masked as advised by two GP friends. It's because of the new variant. Of course I wouldn't do it if I was young and healthy but I am 60 and CEV.
GalesThisMorning · 31/01/2021 21:47

It's not law. There is no one policing it, or even recommending it. It is literally nothing to get worked up over.

Rowenasemolina · 31/01/2021 21:48

I just wear 3 ply or 4 ply masks

PicsInRed · 31/01/2021 21:49

I pop a full thickness plastic bag over my head and gaffer tape it airtight. It does limit the length of shopping trips - one way or the other - but I've never felt safer. 🌈

Pan2 · 31/01/2021 21:49

Well with new, very much more infectious, variants it may need a different practice.
If folk are happier catching and also spreading the virus than wearing a second layer then it's a bit of a comment on them really.

WalrusWife · 31/01/2021 21:50

So are they saying that one mask isn’t enough? Why aren’t SAGE advising it?

MumOfPsuedoAdult · 31/01/2021 21:50

oh FFS!! What @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross said.

sortmylifeoutplease · 31/01/2021 21:50

Had to take one of my kids to hospital today and tried to double mask. It didn't work for me and I got rid of one pretty quickly!

WalrusWife · 31/01/2021 21:51

I wear my one mask as legally required. I don’t really think they are that effective but luckily, science doesn’t rely on believing!

OP posts:
TheRealMrsMorningStar · 31/01/2021 21:51

No. I wear disposable masks that are 3 layers. I dont think I could bear (bare?) 9 layers!

Chloemol · 31/01/2021 21:52

I haven’t but to be honest will be starting when I go into shops at the moment

GalesThisMorning · 31/01/2021 21:52

I don't think it is official advice @WalrusWife. It is literally up to you. Do it or don't. It's not a big deal

perhapstomorrow · 31/01/2021 21:52

I wear a homemade 3 ply mask with a non woven middle layer. I think adding an extra mask would make it much harder to breath.

Throwaway99 · 31/01/2021 21:53

@Pan2

Do you have to wear a mask for 8 hours a day?
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/01/2021 21:54

I struggle to breathe in one, I'd suffocate if I wore 2! I don't think my cartilage piercing would be too happy either, it's painful enough getting one caught on it!

PicsInRed · 31/01/2021 21:55

Safety first.

Do you double / triple mask?
CoffeeandCroissant · 31/01/2021 21:57

@GalesThisMorning

It's not law. There is no one policing it, or even recommending it. It is literally nothing to get worked up over.
Exactly. It's a personal choice, do it if you want, don't if you don't. Hmm

There was also a study showing different ways to make a surgical mask more effective, which included things like using those plastic headbands/ ear savers, double knotting the ear loops and tucking in the sides, etc. Most effective improvement claimed was using a stocking as a kind of buff over the top (for a tighter seal). Looks a bit odd Grin but it did significantly improve the efficacy of the mask apparently (I didn't read the study, only saw the photos and claimed numbers).

If people want to do that or double mask, why not, they're not harming themselves or anybody else and might even be protecting themselves and others a bit more...

Probably better than all those people doing only the bare minimum by pulling up a single layer cotton buff/bandana over their face (which is of very little use) or those wearing masks over their mouth but not their nose...

AubergineDream · 31/01/2021 21:59

No point if your not wearing a visor or goggles. Much better to protect your eyes once than your mouth and nose twice.
Also much better to use a better quality mask in the first place than two which do half a job. It's a bit like having holes in your shoes and so putting Carrier bags over them. Just get better shoes
