I am beyond broken if this means we can't get to any kind of normality.

@Kitkat151 and @SummerBlondey
Indonesia has about 1/12th of covid deaths per million of the UK.
We could do it too if our NHS wasnt struggling.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

I know it's difficult for you to comprehend, but some people actually understand the Covid risk. Vaccinating healthy young people doesn't massively reduce risk of long-term side effects of Covid because it's extremely low in the first place

No need to be quite so rude, especially as I agree with you; my whole point was that there's so little risk to the healthy young that there's no point at all in closing down until they too are jabbed

I'm sorry I can't accept that all of those insisting they'd give away their jab really mean it though ... not when some were the very ones posting the most doom-ridden remarks in the first place

Thanks for yet more interesting links, BelleHathor, and I'm another who, with quite a few miles on the clock, can remember rather a lot - I even recall the abuse hurled at Trump for suggesting border closure
FWIW I can't stand the man either, but it's the inconsistency which irritates ... let's face it, the man could have found a cure for Covid and he'd still be to blame for it

I'm sorry for being rude, but your post sounds quite condescending. I think everyone realises that they won't be the one making decisions on this one - so it's just a way of saying that you agree/disagree with WHO approach. I agree - I'm young, healthy and don't quite get that paranoia amongst other young and healthy people that fight over vaccine that might or might not reduce their TINY risk. Because let's be honest, it is tiny, even with the new mutation (it's been proven!).
Hmmph · 31/01/2021 14:59

I have read the transcript of the press conference. UK was not mentioned at all. The EU was for vaccine nationalism. WHO was saying all countries should be able to vaccinate their Heath professionals and vulnerable before some richer countries start vaccinating their less at risk.

There was also this fairly shocking statistic “Yesterday WHO Africa said the new variants were pushing up deaths and new cases with almost 6,200 people dead on the continent in the past week alone.” www.who.int/multi-media/details/who-daily-press-conference-on-novel-coronavirus---29-january-2021

This is compared to the UK where we have had 8,242 deaths in the last week according to the government dashboard. coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

Nearly 6,200 in the whole of Africa vs 8,242 in just the UK.

@IcedPurple

I don’t want/need the vaccine either. Happy for ‘my’ dose to go elsewhere to someone who needs it.

How does that work though? It's not like you can pop 'your' dose in an envelope and send it off to Needy Person, Poor Country, The World via Royal Mail.

Some countries are prioritising politicians and even elite athletes. Would you be happy for 'your' dose to go to one of them? Not to mention that many countries have high levels of corruption which would likely also apply to vaccine prioritisation. It's not a simple thing.

I was just agreeing with a previous poster who said they were happy for their dose to go elsewhere. No, I don’t think it’s being popped in an envelope.

I would rather it went to someone who needed it but if it goes to someone who just wants it then so be it.

bumbleymummy · 31/01/2021 15:02

@Bythemillpond

It's not ridiculous at all. I'm 32. I'm slim and completely healthy. I'm not scared of COVID-19 in the slightest. It poses almost no risk to me

Someone I know who was also slim, and completely healthy and not much older than you died from Covid. I wouldn’t be so blasé in thinking you are immune. I think the latest mutation is much harsher on the younger people.

It isn’t. It’s just spreads more easily.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/01/2021 15:11

Latest research hints that it may be 30% more nasty. Again, a piece of data that may or may not be supported when more is known.

Also it is important to remember Relative Risk. 3O% more than 10% is 13%

Patrick Valance spent a lot of podium time explaining that last week.

bumbleymummy · 31/01/2021 15:12

That was in men over 60

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/01/2021 15:15

That was his example, wasn't it? Not the small piece of research the journalist wanted to puff!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/01/2021 15:18

Now you've got me reading the NERVTAG statement again 😊

EmmanuelleMakro · 31/01/2021 15:19

No.

BelleHathor · 31/01/2021 15:34

@HeyHeyImABeLeaver

FWIW I can't stand the man either, but it's the inconsistency which irritates ... let's face it, the man could have found a cure for Covid and he'd still be to blame for it

I’m am in no way a Trumpster, however, for me, putting aside for a moment all the craziness that happened during his four years he was/would have been the only President/Prime Minister/Leader that would have held China to account. I expect what we will see now where China is concerned is a rolling over by current leaders and we will have a rinse/repeat of Covid in xxx number of years.

Definitely agree with you, I feel so sad for the Chinese people fighting for freedom (especially in Hong Kong & the Uighurs) who tried to get information to the West. Also the Taiwanese who I was hoping would finally be recognised as a sovereign country. No modern world leader will be able to hold the CCP account, they have deliberately flown into Taiwanese airspace in the last week and the only thing stopping further trouble right now are the US and UK Navy stationed there now. Puzzled re: Trump I give him props for closing the border and also forcing US factories to make PPE and Ventilators, also the large amount of money he spent on Vaccine. (And funnily enough calling the Pharmaceutical companies when Boris was in Hospital)
wonble · 31/01/2021 15:44

As if this world wasn't crazy enough we now have the EU doing a Trump & Trump looking like he made some reasonable decisions.
Wtf is going on! 😆

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/01/2021 15:45

Dont forget The Give and Arlene Foster sounding reasonable!

The world.is currently stood upon it's head!!!! 😁

wonble · 31/01/2021 15:46

I can't take it. I don't know what's what any more!

IcedPurple · 31/01/2021 15:47

@CuriousaboutSamphire

That was his example, wasn't it? Not the small piece of research the journalist wanted to puff!
Apparently that piece of research was already 3 weeks old by the time they 'announced' it, and not all experts belive the evidence is that solid.

I do think that they worry that with falling rates and the succss of the vaccine roll-out, complacency and even rebelliousness might creep in. Hence hyping the new 'deadlier' variant that we all need to be afraid of. Very afraid.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/01/2021 15:50

NERVTAG certainly weren't convinced it is any more deadly, just more transmissible. Which is what Patrick Valance was saying. It took up far more of his time than it should have!!

I remember thinking that if he could have reached a couple of those journalists the would cheerfully have throttled them!

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 31/01/2021 15:53

I definitely see an element of this & not sure how they will maintain the balance once a significant number have been vaccinated. Lots of people seem to think vaccine = 100% protection. My shielding (normally intelligent) parent turned up at my house yesterday for tea as they had the first jab. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Bythemillpond · 31/01/2021 16:06

bumbleymummy even if it spreads more easily a young slim person with no underlying health conditions shouldn’t die of this disease but they have.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 31/01/2021 16:06

@Hmmph thats the thing a few need to actually read the whole thinb

Sparklfairy · 31/01/2021 16:07

I wouldn't worry OP, Boris has ignored advice from WHO before Wink

I'll be disappointed if it does happen though. My DM would probably just miss out and I'd have it as I can't wait to have restrictions lifted.

Selfish? Maybe.

bumbleymummy · 31/01/2021 16:09

@Bythemillpond

bumbleymummy even if it spreads more easily a young slim person with no underlying health conditions shouldn’t die of this disease but they have.
Very few. Young, slim people shouldn’t die from lots of things but some sadly do.
BolloxtoGender · 31/01/2021 16:10

Selfish? Nah. Just human.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/01/2021 16:15

NERVTAG certainly weren't convinced it is any more deadly, just more transmissible. Which is what Patrick Valance was saying. It took up far more of his time than it should have!!

Yes, and a fat lot of good it did him when the media ran with "40% more deadly", with little further explanation and sometimes none at all. It was predictable of course, but that didn't make it any less depressing and still some took it as read

No modern world leader will be able to hold the CCP account

I agree, and in many ways that genuinely does worry me. Bad enough if the CCP had been left to their own devices, but now much of the globe has sold out to them and we're all seeing just what that means

It probably also answers the question of why the wretched media don't cover it much ... little point in riling up the public on something they can do absolutely nothing about

Googles Chinese "investment" in UK and wishes she hadn't

trulydelicious · 31/01/2021 16:20

@LetItGoGo

Yes the whole story actually makes little sense unless you are thinking politically

Exactly. The uncalled for shamanic outbursts by the WHO is nothing but politics
