Teachers, would you work?

Just read an article which was stating that schools may run half days over the summer holidays due to missing so much from school closures.
Teachers, would you back this if you had the option to opt in or out to work over the summer holidays?

No I wouldn't. I have been working with children in the hub and live streaming all day every day . I am very close to burnout now so god knows what I'll be like by July

mumsneedwine · 30/01/2021 18:02

@manicinsomniac I agree. No reason non teachers should know we are unpaid in holidays. But that poster said they were a retired teacher. Why I mentioned the burgundy book - not sure it's a thing anymore but it used to be in every staff room. It lays out the terms and conditions of our contracts. Probably all on line now.

TheSultanofPingu · 30/01/2021 18:04

Just think of all the other school staff who would be needed to go in though. Site staff, Office and kitchen staff, cleaners, midday supervisors.
That's a lot of people who would have to be willing to work.
It's not always about money. For some of us it's the one and only perk of the job.

YouHadMeAtWoof · 30/01/2021 18:04

Hell would freeze solid first.

mamaduckbone · 30/01/2021 18:07

I might do a week if the pay was good. No more than that and possibly not even that. This year has been exhausting.
I'm dreading being asked to go in for keyworkers at half term and Easter.

BluebellsGreenbells · 30/01/2021 18:11

Love to know if other sectors are being asked to for go their holiday to support the economy?

So all holidays would be canceled?

Anyone want to volunteer ?

MrsMime · 30/01/2021 18:13

Not a chance.

FancySomeChips · 30/01/2021 18:13

Teacher.
I would do a week of double pay and a day of my choice I could book off during the school year. Only for the kids I felt needed it- not just the “on paper vulnerable” but my lows who find learning tricky, or those who have less than ideal circumstances but which don’t equate to them needing to be in currently.

Not for the children of the over demanding parents who want to get their kids ahead or who fancy some free childcare while they enjoy some child free time.

Monkeytennis97 · 30/01/2021 18:13

Nope for me.

Nope for DH too.

snowone · 30/01/2021 18:13

Nope! Absolutely not! I'll be enjoying 6 weeks at home with my own children who need me more
than anyone else. Already got a UK break booked and will probably book another one if we can.

FancySomeChips · 30/01/2021 18:14

Oh and a lift of the pay freeze!!

mrshoho · 30/01/2021 18:14
@mrshoho Why would it be an appropriate job for uni students? What teaching skills do you think they would have? I'm sure they could provide childcare, but that's very different.
I wasn't thinking about teaching so much but possibly mentoring/coaching for secondary age students. My own kids, y10 and y11 have weekly online maths help from an engineering student and he has been brilliant.

For primary more play based activities. Would some time spent on reading and numeracy be beneficial?

lunapeace · 30/01/2021 18:14

I'm sure there are plenty of students who will be out of work over the summer who could run some classes!

sweetkitty · 30/01/2021 18:15

No because I’m working full time at the moment in school anyway. ASN school most of our children are in school at least part of the week.

lunapeace · 30/01/2021 18:15

@SeldomFollowedIt

No I’m a TA and the only reason why I do my job is because of those perks.

We had this discussion at work the other day funnily enough and none of the teachers would do it either.

Jeez! That's really quite a horrible thing to say.
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 30/01/2021 18:18

On the holiday pay... michaelt1979.wordpress.com/2020/06/12/are-teachers-paid-for-the-holidays/

I'd consider a week at £400 per day.

MrsHamlet · 30/01/2021 18:19

Why is it a horrible thing to say? TAs get paid a pittance in my experience... it'd be lovely if everyone was in their job for the warm and fuzzies but the reality is that for many people it's a way of paying the bills.

AnxiousAlpaca · 30/01/2021 18:23

For double pay I’d consider it for a week or two.

lunapeace · 30/01/2021 18:25

Well find another way to pay the bills then ffs!
CountessFrog · 30/01/2021 18:26

I wouldn’t send my kids

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 30/01/2021 18:26

No

MrsHamlet · 30/01/2021 18:29

Why are those of us who work with kids expected to do it for the warm and fuzzy feelings? It's a job.

My experience in teaching suggests it would be 'for the kids' and not paid.

Monkeytennis97 · 30/01/2021 18:33

@lunapeace 😂😂😂😂😂
