Teachers, would you work?

Just read an article which was stating that schools may run half days over the summer holidays due to missing so much from school closures.
Teachers, would you back this if you had the option to opt in or out to work over the summer holidays?

Ha, very funny.

Italiandreams · 30/01/2021 15:42

No, I have enough mum guilt with all the hours I work in term time, the holidays are the only reason I am still in the job since having my family to be honest. I want to spend time with them and I’m exhausted!

Cathpot · 30/01/2021 15:42

No. I work part time and in both lockdowns this has gone out the window and I have worked all day for the full week. That’s just how it has to be but I’m looking forward to the summer break more than usual. Maybe by the time we get to summer I will feel differently and might be up for a few stand alone days, maybe with my year 10- but right now that would be a hard pass .

Misssugarplum12764 · 30/01/2021 15:43

I wouldn’t, but mainly because a) I have kids and b) I don’t think it’s necessary. This lockdown we really have just moved the curriculum online and so there would be nothing to “catch up” per se. No one working in education actually thinks the kids who are refusing to engage right now would go into school in the holidays, it’s just an easy headline to placate people shrieking about schools closures! That said, had I been a 22 year old NQT and I’d been offered extra pay to help out at more fun/enrichment style summer camps etc I’d have definitely done a couple of weeks and then used that money towards a holiday. So there’s mileage in the idea if it’s managed properly, but I see no chance of it being managed properly!!

Nowmum43 · 30/01/2021 15:44

I'm an Sen school eta and I would for extra money if my children's school also opened. If not then no I'd be at home with them.
We haven't shut at all in the pandemic and even though we can't do anything in the holidays they are a very welcome rest! I'm counting down the days to half term in total exhaustion.

Liveandletlive3 · 30/01/2021 15:44

@Fascinationends

Not a chance. Not leaving dd alone, even if she is older, she still deserves company. And I wouldn't want her in school over the summer - she deserves some fun and relaxation.
Completely agree with you. This is as difficult for the children as it is for adults. They have had to adjust to remote learning which is draining and to have their holidays taken away to go to school would be horrible.

They need their down time from screens and the mental stress the pandemic is causing and enjoy whatever they can once restrictions are eased and the weather has improved.

profpoopsnagle · 30/01/2021 15:46

I wouldn't, because I am working jolly hard now to make sure that the children in my care are not missing out due to having their physical school closed.

It wouldn't bother me if other colleagues chose to.
I wouldn't send any of my children in for these lessons.

CallmeAngelina · 30/01/2021 15:47

Not in a million years.

DalryPlace · 30/01/2021 15:48

It won't happen. I work with leaders in schools, everyone is on their knees (families, children, school staff, leaders, education authority staff).
Boris BS and diversion to 'good news' when he has to deliver the less favourable.

NovemberR · 30/01/2021 15:48

Why would anyone work over their holidays? Teachers have had a really tough year. Government, media and much of social media have been shitty towards them. There's been little gratitude and little acknowledgement that their jobs and working conditions have been massively difficult. Why would anyone want to do more?

Not a teacher.

Nix32 · 30/01/2021 15:53

Not a hope.

Part time teacher currently working full time for no extra pay. As a staff, we are exhausted. The holidays are much, much needed. Anyone who works through their holidays is going to be shattered before term even starts, and that definitely won't benefit the children.

starrynight19 · 30/01/2021 15:55

Not a chance and I wouldn’t want my children to do it either.

This in spades! Also not a teacher, but having witnessed teaching staff be expected to carry on with no ppe, working extra hours and during holidays while being labelled cowards, workshy, arrogant and all sorts of other delightful things, there wouldn't be a cat in hells chance of sacrificing my family and downtime for no gratitude or reward. *also not a teacher.
Oversize · 30/01/2021 15:58

Nope. It's been more work and stress than normal teaching.

OverTheRainbow88 · 30/01/2021 15:59

No, I wouldn’t. But I do go in on results day and 3 days of summer school for vulnerable kids every year.

CookEatRepeat · 30/01/2021 16:02

Nope.

mrshoho · 30/01/2021 16:05

It could be a great pt job for uni students. Let's face it, it doesn't look like overseas travel, festivals and the like will be taking place. I would say there'd be quite a few young, child free teachers who may be interested.

So true, the idea that teachers are doing less work at the moment is mad - it is so much harder and less rewarding doing online lessons than interacting with the class in school. Parents watching and criticising every move teachers make now want them to give up holidays -mad

Whoever does this would need DBS checks. Student teachers have to be supervised by qualified teachers. My cousin is a young child free teacher and has said ‘hell no’ to volunteering to teach through the summer. I think it’s either going to be very expensive...or a complete flop, if it happens at all.

I think play-schemes would be far better; with focus on games and crafts and play. Nothing to do with teachers and no requirement for QTS.

Fireflies33 · 30/01/2021 16:19

No the work life balance is terrible anyway even with the holidays. Not to mention that teachers use their holiday to plan and resource the next term. Teachers have been working through out.

manicinsomniac · 30/01/2021 16:22

If being paid - Yes, I'd do anything I was asked to do.

If not being paid - I wouldn't do normal lessons but I would do all the fun stuff that's been cancelled for so long (productions, concerts, showcases, competitions, bootcamps etc). I teach performing arts and miss the extra curricular stuff so much I'd do it all summer voluntarily if it was allowed. Not much else to do!

Rowenasemolina · 30/01/2021 16:23

No

mrshoho · 30/01/2021 16:35

Yes I agree with you DBML about the DBS check and supervision. There should absolutely be no expectation on teachers to take part unless willing and happy to.

My SEN school has always run holiday playschemes. In the Summer it's usually the first and last 2 weeks. Lots of TAs and a handful of teachers are always keen. That would be great for mainstream too if possible to run.

IndecentFeminist · 30/01/2021 16:36

Yes, for a week or so if paid extra.

Randomschoolworker19 · 30/01/2021 16:41

I'm a TA and I don't normally get paid over the summer holidays so the opportunity to earn some more money would be welcome. Especially since I am young and healthy.

I currently have a holiday booked for July (deferred from last August) so I will need to see whether that will go ahead or not. I'm starting to think not, though.

Also depends if it will be paid or not. If it won't be paid then not a chance. I earn pennies as it is.

Is it a good idea? It could be for the most vulnerable who aren't engaging with the home learning.
