Teachers, would you work?

Just read an article which was stating that schools may run half days over the summer holidays due to missing so much from school closures.
Teachers, would you back this if you had the option to opt in or out to work over the summer holidays?

WhenSheWasBad · 30/01/2021 16:43

I will be looking after my own children. So no.

GreyCurtains · 30/01/2021 16:44

Absolutely not.

GoldSlipper · 30/01/2021 16:47

There is absolutely no way I’d even consider it. My priorities in the holidays are fit me to switch off from work and spend quality time with my boys. Once they got their teens I won’t have this luxury as no doubt I’ll be lame to hang around with!

Mayvis · 30/01/2021 16:50

I’d be happy to do 2 weeks if paid and if my children could also attend their school. I asked them if they’d go if it was an option and they were both very enthusiastic.

Smartiepants79 · 30/01/2021 16:51

Nope, not even if they paid me double my salary!

ValancyRedfern · 30/01/2021 17:01

I've always done a week's summer school, paid, for the upcoming year 7s in the the summer. I'd happily do something like that, but not any more as I have my own kids to look after.

DoubleDeckerBusRideLover · 30/01/2021 17:13

No, I wouldn't.

I am on my knees right now, carrying extra load due to so many colleagues off with covid - teaching in school and online.

My own family are totally neglected and need some time with me. Right now I am prioritising everyone else's children.

And I usually am working quite a lot at home, I use a lot of the summer to get ready for September.

If I want to survive the Autumn term, I will need the summer.

Nix32 · 30/01/2021 17:16

@mrshoho Why would it be an appropriate job for uni students? What teaching skills do you think they would have? I'm sure they could provide childcare, but that's very different.

CallmeAngelina · 30/01/2021 17:24

I also hope that, if this idea goes ahead, they won't be expecting teachers to do the planning for it before the term ends.

Kitcat122 · 30/01/2021 17:29

I'd do a week but only if paid extra. As a TA I give enough of my time unpaid as it is.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 30/01/2021 17:33

My daughter is a teacher. She is already buying supplies for school out of her own salary. Would she get paid?

Also she is away for two weeks for a much deserved holiday after working throughout.

TA. No from me. I want to spend time with my own family.

Darklane · 30/01/2021 17:41

So do teachers not get paid for the summer holidays now?
Only asking, as a retired teacher, as when I was working full time your annual salary was broken down into twelve equal monthly amounts so that you got the same salary payment each month including August which was the only full month that the schools I worked in were closed.
Only supply teachers didn’t get paid through the holidays.
Am just curious if it’s different now & you miss a monthly salary in summer.

mumsneedwine · 30/01/2021 17:44

@Darklane as an ex teacher did you never read the burgundy book ? No, teachers are not paid for holidays and never have been. They are paid for 1,995 (I think) contracted hours a year. That doesn't even cover term time. Pay is split equally over 12 months, as is associate staff pay who also are not paid for holidays. Surprised an ex teacher wouldn't know that.

User2378901 · 30/01/2021 17:44

Maybe a week IF I got paid.

sonjadog · 30/01/2021 17:45

I would consider it if they paid me considerable overtime, say double salary. Without that, not a chance.

KatherineOfGaunt · 30/01/2021 17:46

No. I doubt the government would pay me my usual daily wage but regardless I've been going in to school as usual throughout (SEN teacher). I need a break.

1265 hours over 195 days.

CuckooCuckooClock · 30/01/2021 17:54

No chance. I will be very much looking forward to time with my children without the stress of working at the same time.
Uni students could supervise while children worked through oak academy lessons but personally I would rather my students had a good summer of fun so they were refreshed for the new year.

Scarby9 · 30/01/2021 17:57

Most of our current trainee teachers would jump at the chance to do this. Although the PGCEs have been luckier than most, and have had their two placements, they have been in and out with bubbles bursting and having to self-isolate themselves. They are desperate for more experience and will be qualified by August so could be paid at NQT rates.

manicinsomniac · 30/01/2021 18:00

I don't know how well known it is, tbh, mumneedswine I'm a teacher and didn't realise our holidays were unpaid until I joined mumsnet, which was about 2 years after I started teaching!!! Blush

I didn't question it. I got a pay slip each month and assumed that was my pay for that month. Including the August one. I don't remember anyone explaining anything about the split over the year pay to me. They may have done though - I was a very immature and messed up 22 year old when I started work.

Though I still don't know what a burgundy book is...

So, I never assume that non teachers will know that our holidays are unpaid.

mumsneedwine · 30/01/2021 18:00

@KatherineOfGaunt thank you 😊. Knew my numbers were wrong 😂

CallmeAngelina · 30/01/2021 18:01

@Darklane, Why would it have changed? Of course we still get paid in August, although not for August.

Why would you not know that, as a former teacher?

Anawi · 30/01/2021 18:01

Not. A. Chance.

Some current students might, or supply teachers. But no, I'm exhausted juggling everything, still in school every one of my normal days and doing remote learning as well. The summer is for my own children and family.
