Teachers, would you work?

Just read an article which was stating that schools may run half days over the summer holidays due to missing so much from school closures.
Teachers, would you back this if you had the option to opt in or out to work over the summer holidays?

Not a chance.

lunapeace · 30/01/2021 18:47

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation at least you've said you enjoy working with students. Thank you. Any issues you have thereafter are absolutely valid. But you do actually enjoy your work to a degree which is important (I speak as a parent too).

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 30/01/2021 18:47

No. Four weeks of summer break last year was the only actual break. It will feel the same by summer this year I expect.

Makingnumber2 · 30/01/2021 18:50

I might do a week- but it would depend on the money. I would expect to be paid the same rate we get for running extra revision classes etc. which is £25/hour.

Monkeytennis97 · 30/01/2021 18:51

@lunapeace it's not about not enjoying being with the kids. If we didn't like that but we wouldn't still be doing it decades later.

CallmeAngelina · 30/01/2021 18:51

I think the pertinent question here then, for @lunapeace, is what her dh does (if she has one).
I've often found that the school staff who are most inclined to do more for less are those who are financially cushioned in some way.
But that's no excuse for criticising those who for whom reasonable recompense is important.

thebookeatinggirl · 30/01/2021 18:54

No.

To be able to work in school I've been self-isolating from my husband (CEV) and teenagers, living by myself. I've been working stupid hours, teaching in school and running home schooling for my class - 50/50 split. I'm hoping that come the summer I'll get to spend some proper quality time with my family. It feels like it's more needed this year than ever. I'm already exhausted and getting more and more depressed from the lack of social contact and physical closeness with my loved ones, and from the drain of work. I desperately need the summer break and no money in the world would entice me to work.

However, I'm sure there would be plenty of young teachers who would relish the chance of earning extra during the long holidays. No way would the government fund it though, so moot point.

I suppose on the plus side after 10 years in the finance sector you would know what a mercenary idiot is.

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 30/01/2021 18:57

Not unless my own kids were in and my term-time only wraparound care could provide the drop-offs and pick-ups or my school could let me work around them. Childcare would be an issue for many.

FrippEnos · 30/01/2021 18:58

@Liveandletlive3

Would this be on top of the free marking for the replacement exams that are replacing the exams that are not happening that the DfE wants us to do?

MrsHamlet · 30/01/2021 19:02

Ah Fripp I'll mark the non exam exams. But only if they pay me.

NO. We are working right now. Would you give up your holiday?
Kitcat122 · 30/01/2021 19:05

Come on, we should be supporting each other not being nasty. People do jobs for lots of different reasons (obviously mainly money). But we need to stick together in these times not hurl abuse.

Youreatragedystartingtohappen · 30/01/2021 19:07

@MrsHamlet

That's Miss Mercenary idiot to you, thanks.

It impresses me that you've decided that I don't care about my students because I've pointed out that I'm not obliged to work in my holidays - for which I am not paid - and that TAs, who will be paid considerably less, aren't either.

Why should it be a vocation? That's a convenient way for people to be convinced to accept less whilst giving more.

I've got a job thanks. It come with 13 weeks holiday, so I think I'll stick with it.

This. All day long.

The notion of it being a vocation for me? Nope

But no need to feel bad for the kids who I teach, they get a really good education because I'm really quite good at it if I do say so myself. But the fact it comes with the holidays is what drew me to it and keeps me in it and I feel no shame in stating that openly.

Also- re the thread. No thank you

lunapeace · 30/01/2021 19:07

@FrippEnos hilarious, I enjoyed the pay cheque thanks! Still reaping the rewards now.

MrsHamlet · 30/01/2021 19:07

Couldn't agree more @Kitcat122 - but I'm apparently a mercenary idiot and some kind of witch, so you probably don't want to listen to me.

DotBall · 30/01/2021 19:08

No, absolutely not.
I have been, and am, working during the week and generally ‘always on’ if a pupil has a query about a task outside of school hours - evenings and weekends - as they can’t always access equipment during school hours.
I’m doing my bit to keep the wheels turning until we’re back to normal thanks.

MrsHamlet · 30/01/2021 19:09

"Cold blooded witch" ... that's the one

cassgate · 30/01/2021 19:09

I am a TA who does it for the love of the job and the kids. The main attraction is that I am around during the holidays for my own children. The money is shit and I could earn more in a supermarket but as DH earns a good salary the money is a secondary consideration. If the holidays disappear then it is a less attractive proposition for me so I would consider leaving despite the fact that I actually enjoy it. So no I still wouldn’t work during the summer paid if not.

mouldyhouse101 · 30/01/2021 19:13

Nope.

I'm working every day anyway. When am I meant to have a holiday...

FrippEnos · 30/01/2021 19:14

*@Liveandletlive3

What is funny is you calling others the names that the finance sector is famous for.

Happymum12345 · 30/01/2021 19:16

No

CountessFrog · 30/01/2021 19:18

Bet you’re glad you left teaching, Call Me Angela.

BelleSausage · 30/01/2021 19:18

No. I am close having a breakdown already trying to do a full teaching timetable remotely and homeschool a reception child.

Not for a million pounds.

ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 30/01/2021 19:23

No, I'm planning to spend my holidays giving my own dc my undivided attention, which they haven't had for a long time.
