I've got an interesting vaccine problem.

My 65th birthday is in a few months. At the moment I'm in group 7. If I'm vaccinated before my birthday, no problem. If I'm not vaccinated before my birthday, I fall into group 5. Will I then have a fight to get the vaccine because I didn't get it when they were doing my group?

Another question is, if I get the AZ vaccine after my birthday, or the second dose after my birthday, will the French or the Germans, or both, refuse to recognise that I have been vaccinated as they say the AZ doesn't work for over 65s?

Neither problem is major in the scheme of things, but I'd rather avoid hassles if I can.

Ugh, just heard from someone IRL that we will need boosters every 6 months. I very much doubt it as everything I have read suggests natural immunity lasts that long and vaccines tend to last longer but does anyone have any actual science to back that up?
Nobody really knows yet. It will be carefully monitored, probably for a few years.
nevertakeabreak · 31/01/2021 14:57

Just finished my first shift as a vaccinator this morning. It was fab. Several hundred jabs this morning by the team. No immediate side effects. Everyone extremely grateful.

Yes it is

That's annoying @feelingverylazytoday this was told to the person by a doctor she knows. I assume it's like the head teacher people know who has said schools won't be back until Easter, September, 2031 etc. Makes it harder to fight the misinformation though.

I highly doubt that. I think one idea is it might need to be an annual event but 6 monthly, no. Natural immunity has been seen to last about 8 months post getting the virus I think? And factor in the fact respiratory viruses tail off in summer, which we saw clearly last year and you're looking at an annual autumnal/winter vaccination programme at worst (I hope). And I'd hazard a guess it might end up being like the flu programme where the old/vulnerable get jabbed and others can pay for it if they wish but many won't simply because they don't feel they need to make the effort. We'll see, I guess!

Sorry but I really can't see the whole world needing constant vaccinating every 6 months for the rest of time!! Just because there's no evidence to say this isn't true, there's also no evidence to say that it is the case either!

The flu jab is yearly but only the vulnerable have that, it would most likely be the same case if boosters are needed.

Holahola12 · 31/01/2021 15:32

Used the vaccine link now several friends have managed to get parents booked in and my Mum is this week!
Thank you!! There is a glisten of hope.

TheCuriousMonkey · 31/01/2021 15:53

My 69 yr old step dad and wonderful grandpa to my kids, who is vulnerable and works in social care, had his first dose last night. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to know that soon my kids will be able to cuddle him again. Not being able to do that has been so hard for our family.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 31/01/2021 15:59

@FourTeaFallOut

Can you imagine if it did? GrinThat would be a cascade of unintended consequences!
Please don't that🤦‍♀️

I am imagining the new wave of anti vax threads😕

TJ17 · 31/01/2021 15:59

I don't want to be the thread police on here but can we try and be careful about bringing bad news/doom mongering rumours over here to discuss?

I purposely avoid all other threads and news for my own sanity and mental health so it's not helpful when we let it infiltrate this thread.

I know some people can't resist reading the other threads but I personally find it really easy to avoid them because I really and truly don't want to know what's being said out there to cause anxiety.

starfish88 · 31/01/2021 16:04

Thank you, that's very reassuring and rational. I also couldn't see how the world could afford to vaccinate everyone on a 6 monthly basis. Same person is insisting this 6 monthly proof will be required for normal life and travel forever and I just feel so sad about it. Im an expat so it's not like I just want a holiday, (although no judgment there, we certainly all need one) but with quarantine and restrictions on travel I can't see family. My grandma is in her 90s, she's had the first vaccine but even then there are no guarantees she will live until I get home again. My parents are missing all of DS toddler years. I know there are bigger problems and I don't want to be negative on such a positive thread but this positivity is really helping me keep sane.

louisejxxx · 31/01/2021 16:04

Data is up! Approx 599000 doses, 21000 cases, 590ish deaths

Lanaa · 31/01/2021 16:08

I've just found this thread.

I previously deleted Mumsnet because the doom and gloom was affecting my sanity.

Thank you all for taking the time to share this good news. It's lovely to read.

I know what she is referring to and has totally misunderstood

They had said so far that natural immunity after having covid last for at least 6 months for most people. That is because the study in question has only been running for 6 month.

As in once it has been running for 7 months they will probably say immunity for 7 months. Then so on and son after that.

Basically they can't officially say a length of time longer than the study it self because that is guessing not science.

The experts that have done educated guesses seem to think we can expect 12 months at least. Could be a lot longer. Nobody can say for sure.

bumbleymummy · 31/01/2021 16:13

Deaths seem to have started levelling off this week which was good to see. I know they’re the last to start going down but we seem to be headed the right way Smile

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 31/01/2021 16:14

Gees Louise I should have previewed that last post.

Even worse than normal😂

alreadytaken · 31/01/2021 16:15

First piece of good news is that thanks to the publicity here for the NHS booking a CEV friend who lives with someone in a risky job has a booking a week tomorrow. They have shielded for a year and had 2 weeks of panic when one of their family got covid but managed to isolate and not pass it on. I've been more worried about them than myself :)

Level75 · 31/01/2021 16:16

What amazing vaccine figures!!

In other good news, flu is practically non existent this year : www.thetimes.co.uk/article/hygiene-and-immunity-leave-flu-germs-with-nowhere-to-go-xxdb65klt

louisejxxx · 31/01/2021 16:22

I wonder if we will see our first dip below 20000 cases at some point this week 🙏🏻

NeedingCoffee · 31/01/2021 16:23

Another amazing vaccination stat; yesterday over 1% of the population received a vaccination in a single day.

How’s that for mind bogglingly good Grin

There is no science to back it up I wouldn’t have thought. My assumption is that they will still very much be monitoring the trial participants until signs of immunity waning start to show - both trials were conducted months and months before mass roll out so we will have a decent chunk of time as a warning before needing to roll it out again.

I’ll caveat the above with ‘I’m not an expert’ but if immunity only lasted 6 months, we would know about it by now.
