Fuck it, I am hiding the thread, let’s just pretend none of the bad stuff is happening.

carolinesbaby · 02/02/2021 12:55

Countess
I am sorry about your news. I really am. But I, and many other, come here to focus on the positive. For me it's a mental health thing. There's plenty of other threads to discuss the bad news.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 02/02/2021 13:01

Fuck it, I am hiding the thread, let’s just pretend none of the bad stuff is happening.

No one is doing that!

What we ARE doing is using this thread to focus on the positives of which there are some at the moment. I'm sorry about your friend but this really isn't the thread for bad news (the title gives it away)

The rest of the coronavirus board is full of bad news threads.

@Pomegranatespompom

on BBC News just now, Prof Hunter stating Pfizer 91% effective after 1 dose at 3 weeks - this is fantastic news ! Feel quite perked up.

Study to be published.

The 2nd dose will extend immunity for many months.

Thank you for this - my mum and dad have had their jabs this morning and it was Pfizer they had Smile
FourTeaFallOut · 02/02/2021 13:03

@TheChineseChicken

Do we think this is a likely scenario: roll out existing vaccines as fast as possible, giving good protection against the original covid and reasonable protection against new strains. Managing well over summer due to effect of vaccines, lockdown and summer weather. Then come eg September start booster jabs for the vulnerable groups with tweaked vaccines that work better against the new strains? That doesn’t sound too daunting but I don’t know how realistic it is
That's my working forecast although I'm not sure we'll need to re-vax the elderly as soon as autumn.
FourTeaFallOut · 02/02/2021 13:06

Please don't leave @thecountessofFitzdotterel, there will be people who oscillate up and down the spectrum when it comes to different opinions but I don't think you need to worry that this will become another anti-dementors thread. I'm sorry to hear about your df Flowers

Treaclepie19 · 02/02/2021 13:07

Thats amazing about Pfizer. My parents had theirs on Sunday and they've been told they'll have their next ones in 3-4 weeks.

TheChineseChicken · 02/02/2021 13:12

@FourTeaFallOut I guess I was just thinking along the lines of the flu vaccine programme, which runs September to March. Makes sense to do both at the same time! Who knows though, I’m just making it up Grin

Delatron · 02/02/2021 13:13

I think the message at the moment is that we need to be careful due to those new mutations whilst the vulnerable build up immunity from the vaccines. But long term this won’t be an issue, it’s just right now.

It’s a bit of a media onslaught with these constant mutations. But they’re only really found in countries who are good at analysing samples. Viruses mutate, scientists know this and so do vaccine makers. They’ll be able to tweak the vaccines and they still provide effectiveness. Enough still to reduce death and serious illness. And that’s the ultimate goal.

Nobody is minimising this. We are all in lockdown, following the rules. But what is different to previous pandemics is that we have the constant onslaught of media news and they can always put a spin on the news (normally fed by the government).

There is positive news to share in all this. It’s helpful for many to avoid the other threads. There’s far too many on here who would happily have everyone in lockdown until 2025. There needs to be a balance. One or two positive threads versus the hundreds of negative ones.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/02/2021 13:15

Oh, yeah, that does sound efficient TheChineseChicken, I like it 😁

I hope you stay. It’s a hugely varied situation for people and it’s ok to say that.

Thanks, I’ll include it in my application for Vaccine Minister

Don't leave us Countess.

I think wobbles are definitely allowed (yikes, I've had enough) and everyone's experience if both different and valid.

What's that saying, "We're all in the same storm but in different boats". I'f you'd like sanctuary in my boat it's full of hot soup and kittens, whilst acknowledging that reality can be absolutely crap.

Job's yours Chinese Chicken.
I look forward to seeing you an a podium near me soon. Which is more than can be said for the current incumbent of the post

Can I check about this as I don’t want to get the wrong end of the stick.

Is it right that this means 91% effective at stopping people getting it at all? The remaining 9% who get it, is it that they can not get severe disease or death either? Just a mild version? Or do some of that 9% still die?

Iamclearlyamug · 02/02/2021 13:54

My good news for the day is that my 57 year old CEV mum will be having her first jab on Thursday 😍😍 we’re in south Hampshire if that makes a difference 😊😊

Level75 · 02/02/2021 14:13

SputnikV 92% effective! I know a lot of our press were very sniffy about how fast it was rolled out in Russia but it really works and they are trialling mixing doses with AstraZ: www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55900622

LetItGoGo · 02/02/2021 14:13

I think that is basically the government plan too. The experts seem to suggest it is likely.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 02/02/2021 14:24

1990s

Your first option is right Smile

The 9% that catch it are still protected from serious illness or death 👍🥰

BigWoollyJumpers · 02/02/2021 14:25

My good news of the day.

First walk of the year where the sun actually had some warmth to it. You could feel the warmth on your face. I had to remove my coat and scarf half way round the block, and was perfectly warm in just a thin jumper and jeans Grin.

Frazzled2207 · 02/02/2021 14:27

@BigWoollyJumpers
fab. is grim here today but we had this yesterday. and although mine haven't quite, several neighbours' narcissuses have come out.
Feeling the sun on my cheeks was glorious.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 02/02/2021 14:28

They are saying 100% protection from death or serious illness

However I do think that there will always be a ridiculously small percentage of deaths. Nothing is ever totally 100%. However when I say that I do mean you are more likely to choke to death on a boiled sweet or something.
